Material design is shit. You need to follow that awful guide in order to make your app look "modern" and more appealing to users, leaving aside functionality.

Follow the guidelines and you application won't break if changes are made upstream. And you don't end up with shit like Microsoft having to include fixes in Windows for a specific popular application because it's developer didn't follow the guidelines or used undocumented calls.
