Hey Sup Forums

Hey Sup Forums

What's a good alternative for this dinosaur? I need something that can play .mkv, .flv, .avi, and practically anything I can throw at it that is within reason? I'm on a new build and don't want to bog it down with VLC like on my previous PC.

OS?

w7PRO

MPC-HC

Windows Media Player by Microsoft

>WMP
>.avi
.mkv
.flv

come on now

Light alloy
Kmp

Gonna try this one out. Thanks bro.

What are you trying to say?

mpv.io

/thread

There's no a single program that can do all the the things VLC does.

I use vlc everyday, what's wrong with it?

Nothing. It just tickles Sup Forums's autism.

No GUI.

MPC-HC

Try MPC-HC, new build is going to be released soon.

If you don't know what you're doing just search for "Lav Filters MegaMix" and choose MPC-HC and a fitting profile for madvr according to your PC specs.

what do you mean "bog it down"?

>.flv
>.avi

No bloat.

this

git gud

I dont use mpv, but I just did a quick apt-cache search and it looks like there is a gnome-mpv and smplayer available for GUIs for it.

mpv is all you need

No features.

MPC HC

I'm aware of that, and I'm using Bomi alongside VLC on Antergos. I think that's the only one available for Windows 7.

K-LITE

Just use windows media player and download needed codecs

Windows build sucks compared to Linux

iOS

This srsly. Automatic subtitles, very lightweight, low on CPU usage. I have a craptop with celeron and when I played 1080p video with 5.1 audio on vlc it sucked ass but it worked flawlessly on mpc.

mpv
mpc-hc if you don't want to spend time configuring stuff

What the fuck are you doing on Sup Forums if you don't care about tech

What's wrong with VLC? I've never had any issue with it.

You shills should get lost.

Nothing is wrong with it, but why use inferior software when there are better alternatives like mpv or mpc-hc?

Mpc-hc, mpv or smplayer.

potplayer

Yes, it has features. What was your point?

>chatting

>chinese
>proprietary

No way jose

...

But VLC can play all those
Honestly VLC is one of the only media players that you can get for free that is that versatile

I didn't realize another window popped up, it said chat but it was blank, weird

and now the button is gone
no more chat for me I guess

mpv and mpc-hc can play all those aswell while having a better picture. Last time I tried vlc couldnt handle 7.1 audio. mpv can also play more than vlc can.

My point is that you have to memorize keyboard commands and edit config files to make it usable.

t. Botnet ;^)

You dont have to but it does make it better. I think setting up my config was way easier than setting up mpc-hc+madvr. And if that is too hard for you than I feel sorry for you.

And how is any of that better than just using VLC? It's FOSS, multi platform and has a lot of features.

Why would you need a GUI for a fucking media player though?

See:

Picture quality. Colors are better, it renders faster. vlc is a video lan client, its not a dedicated media player like mpv. If you cant uderstand this then there is no hope for you. Use whatever you want, these are just the facts.

>You dont have to

That's false. Basic commands like volume adjust, audio channel and subtitle selection is what everyone uses. You can't dismiss those as a non default use case.

So your saying its not retard friendly enough for you?

>video lan client

It's better to refere to it as a "video server" because it's really that at its roots.

So add a gui if you cant remember 4 keys!! There are plenty of frontends for mpv.

>Picture quality. Colors are better.
Proof?

I'm using Bomi on Linux. It's a front-end for MPV with a lot of features I'd otherwise have to add by myself if I was using MPV.

Why should a use choose to code something when he can simply pick an alternative with those features included? mpv isn't gaining wider ground when it actually could.

Compare for yourself. Its noticable.

It's aight, mpv does everything that VLC does while being lighter and cleaner and no real downsides.

But if you're happy with VLC then keep using it, it's your machine after all.

But VLC sucks hard. I want to use mpv.io but I don't like the logo, what do?

Those features are included! tech illiterates just dont know how to use it. And I hope the devs dont dumb down the software to accomidate those people. mpv is a different product than media players with a gui. Its more advanced.

>Those features are included! tech illiterates just dont know how to use it. And I hope the devs dont dumb down the software to accomidate those people.
This would only make sense for server related software.

>implementing simple controls that already exist through command line is dumbing down
>implying gui and command line can't co-exist

More like typical cli programming practises where you can reach the commands at the initialization step and the rest of the software can't dynamically access them. Bravo mpv shill

Its designed to be a backend thats why you can use it with plex.

Then don't promote it as the end all be all media player.

>why do you need a GUI to use a program made to view media?

Retarded Lisa poster

Its great for people who want a cean, efficient, and highly customizable media player with excellent picture quality.

Not who you replied to, but
Arguments like these are why mpv users have a toxic reputation. You have no idea how much technological experience OP has, yet you write things like "if you can't write a config file then there is no hope for you".

Just tell people "I like to use mpv because it works great after setting it up properly, which requires a certain level of knowledge and patience".

not him but I don't know why you're so asshurt about mpv, I haven't even changed the default settings on mine or """""coded""""" any customization and I have been using it for years

VLC is hot garbage, it's an objective truth

Not him, but
>VLC is hot garbage
which is why OP is looking for an alternative. Nobody is defending VLC.

>VLC is hot garbage, it's an objective truth
You feel superior by doing something developers should've already done, right?

If it keeps normies out maybe thats a good thing

so you assume whoever is asking for a media player is a normie, and then recommend them mpv because "lol he can't figure it out"?

nice trolling my dude !

stop white knighting

if you and your butt buddy want to use inferior software go for it, no need to frolic it around, this isn't one of your little pride parades

>mpv file
>p for pause
>m for mute
>f for full screen
>left and right for seek

I had an aneurysm just thinking about these commands

It can't open those

Why not VLC? You can always use MPV.

>implying I recommended it
>implying everyone lurking is a normie
>implying mpv is hard to set up for even the average user

You're not too bad yourself

literally any media player meets those requirements OP

i will tell you that i have no affiliation with OP, but you won't believe me anyway so i'll just tell you to keep on making mpv users' reputation worse, you're doing a great job

This OP. Better video quality as well.

What do you need in a media player? I doubt anyone does anything other than pausing/resuming and adjusting volume after opening a video. And even if you need more you can always download a pre-made config file.

How do you add subtitles without editing config files? How do you stream?

lol

Why's there no F1 to show all these and instead there's a clusterfuck of a manual.

(you)

You can add an srt file to the folder with the movie like any other player or you can add a script that you can find at github that downloads subs for you. To stream you add youtube-dl to your mpv folder then type mpv URL in the terminal. Or you can install an addon or webextension that opens up links from your browser in 2 clicks.

Still a lot more than you'd have to do by using VLC.

Why do you have to explain this rather than mpv devs? Why is there no document on common use cases available? Why are the devs cockblocking their own application? Are they being paid?

With better picture and more control I dont care if it takes me 2 more seconds.

Kek

The only option

Just use VLC, pleb.

eat shit and die

I think, MPC-HC needs external codecs. I use kawaii codec pack for that.

>unironically defending VLC

Holy kek and some people even said nobody will defend VLC haha

Ignore the faggots who say MPC-HC. I often encounter broken videos MPC won't play that VLC will. And it's useless when playing incomplete video, like in-progress torrents. If all your shit is done and well encoded though, MPC is very light. You said your PC is new though? Why the fuck is it too slow for any video player? You have to have like 10 porn videos open at a time for this shit to matter.

Also MPC isn't better quality unless you watch illustrated shit like anime. I've tried MadVR with the most expensive and recommended scaling options and there's just no fucking difference if the material is photographic. I also don't understand why people sperge over raping their CPU or GPU to make their chinese cartoons barely look better.

I really like potplayer. Plays everything VLC does in my experience, and is really good at finding keyframes when seeking through in-progress torrents. I also like being able to seek smoothly by dragging the seek bar. MPC-HC weebs should even like it because you can use MadVR.

It's the best player out there, both on Windows and Linux. Any argument against it is invalid, especially the "colour" or "quality" ones. There's no difference between them. Only idiots with fucked up calibration.

Top kek
Some of us have 20/20 vision and displays over 50"

They don't like it because it actually became popular after they shillled it so much.
