find ./ -type f -exec md5sum {} \; >> ../checksums.md5
you run that from the parent folder and it will recursively find all the files and exec md5sum on them, appending the result to checksums.md5. i put that file one level up for precaution, so the find command wouldn't try to exec the md5sum command on it and enter an infinite loop.
probably a dozen better ways to do it, but that's the magic of the shell!
