At least Flash is almost dead.

But seriously, how much worse can it get? What comes next?

smart phones killed the web. when you needed a computer to access internet you still needed a shred of common sense. now all the major websites have dedicated apps so you're constantly in a walled garden.

Come home, white man.

I get that too. The internet is now a 24/7 information firehose for most people, an endless cacophony. They have no more respite, no more time to disconnect and reflect. Everyone is always online.

Welcome to people 2.0
>Memorization has no purpose other than how to google something
>ads will find there way into every facet of life
> everything you do everywhere all the time is being recorded

It's massively cancer riddled sure, just build your own sites with your friends if you're dissatisfied.

>What comes next?
Gigantic IoT botnets literally killing the web.
And I kinda hope it happens

>Is the web over?
yes

I didn't even read your post but I'm sure you touched on most of the reasons why

working on it boss

This.

Smartphones and the upcoming "OSes for Dummies" killed the "real", old web.

Even wikipedia is mutilated by morons.
I miss the time when Googling was a skill.

Eh, probably not. I remember people saying the same shit about AJAX, Web 2.0 and Myspace. Take off the goggles.

>Russians
I wonder whos behind this post

>>anti-adblock
?

Come on, you can't see the difference?
The change now is massive.

Not even accounting for AI chatbots, all kinds of fancy centralized censorship and logging.
Oh boy, that's a hell of a fucking logging operation that's going on. Everything you type.

t. 32 year old

Everything wrong with the web today started roughly 10 years ago with Web 2.0 and MySpace.

It was around the time that iOS 9.0 came out and normies got adblock.

Go to Forbes with an adblocker that isn't ublock and you'll understand.
It doesn't even stop with mainstream websites like Facebook and YouTube. Hiro is certainly selling Sup Forums user data to advertisers and it would be reasonable to assume other edgy websites do as well.

Most of those only concern bad websites. You can just not use them.

>no social media
>WSJ homepage with subscription is my only MSM news source
>Sup Forums is only site I browse
>any other site is used briefly with a specific purpose in mind i.e. a quick reference lookup on IMDb or a tutorial on YouTube
>occasionally torrent movies or music, or get a book from Gutenberg
>only use phone for text, call, and email

Web 2.0 is designed to be as addictive and manipulative as possible, so the only solution is to participate in it as little as possible, or cut it out completely. My browsing habits listed above with a simple adblocker seem to do the trick nicely.

Why would you go anywhere with an adblocker that isn't ublock?

There is a difference, yeah. We have more choice and better technology than we did 20 years ago.

I would say it started much earlier than that, but there was a huge influx of the lowest common denominator getting online, you're right about that. Not to sound like a hipster, but you have to avoid the largely popular sites and fads to get the gems, as laymen will water down and erode whatever they touch given enough time.

Essentially every website in existence uses Google Analytics and/or Google Adsense.

So google can pretty much see everything you ever visited plus (probably) everything you ever typed on the internet. And from now on microsoft logs offline data too.

Customer data are indeed sold all the time, and they're increasingly valuable as more and more people use them for more and more things.

Imagine the kind of manipulation that could pull off if you had a person's entire internet history.
People are already turning to fucking automatons.
Facebook can tightly control their information channels, create the sense of community action etc. Same with Google news, fake comment sections, fake news etc.
And if Google wants to censor something, it's gone. Nobody will even notice.

It's certainly a new era. People were always dumb, people always were buying crap the media sold, but this is a whole new level.

Googling is still a skill to some degree, it's amazing how bad normies are at simple searches.

Their new machine learning algorithms messed it up.

Although it does work better for the average moron, suggestions are incredibly aggressive.

They often "correct" my query to something completely irrelevant.

Also their "Products-first, answers-second" strategy is also a bit off the hook, sometimes I have to skip a couple pages of e-shops to reach a forum answer or wiki page.

>Waah websites over traditional http is over and websites over http is all the internet has also I'm 19

There are countless Web 3.0 platforms out there that solve these problems. Distributed, decentralized networks are the future, we're giving up on the traditional internet. It's broken beyond repair, that's precisely why projects like bitcoin, maidsafe, ethereum, storj, and IPFS are all in agreement that the traditional internet is abandonware. Not all of them will succeed, but at least one of them will.

Quit bitching on Sup Forums, find a project to support and and fucking contribute to them.

It's easy to be worried they're manipulating your data. But i feel they have much more power when they see data of whole societies. They would be able to infer patterns to manipulate the course of society

>fake news
Such as?

Can't turn off tab animations in chrome or chromium, have to have addons that break the browser with ads every so often to retain old firefox-like tab functionality.

This has been my approach for a few years now too. It makes the internet a lot more boring (and less stupid) so it forces you to disengage and do other stuff.

>Distributed, decentralized networks are the future
>future

So we're just now learning what Usenet knew all along?

"Luddites" were right once again.

>Web 2.0 is designed to be as addictive and manipulative as possible, so the only solution is to participate in it as little as possible, or cut it out completely.

Honestly, it sounds like you just have issues that you're trying to pin on big, bad social media. I've never had a problem with going overboard with social media, I just use it as a messenger pretty much.

Besides, you're on Sup Forums, which is just as bad and 'addicting' as any other social media site.

AFAIK, Google and Facebook only use their collected data for targeting ads, which in itself is unsettling to me.

The issue with fake information and fake news comes from other people manipulating these massive platforms for their own ends. That's where the link spam, fake followers, Twitter bots, etc come in and suddenly there are headlines saying that CNN aired hardcore porn for 30 minutes.

That's good advice.
If I could do text-only, no-javascript and no-images browsing, I'd like that again.

Just subscribe to the news agencies/magazines/organizations you want to hear from, make sure they're diverse enough and cover your actual needs for information and you're done.

But then again I mostly use internet to avoid reality, so I'm not quite there yet.

There's actually been studies that show the addicting nature of the dopamine burst that using social media subjects you to.

Someone could always just make something like the Tor network that focuses on the removal of normie bullshit instead of anonymity. Riffle looked promising. What ever happened to that? Did the CIA niggers kill it?

I'm tempted...

No, the current state of the internet is really, really bad.

I don't get that. It's not like I'll disable my adblocker for them.

I see other people as mindless machines now, their purpose is solely to take in propaganda from facebook and spam it in conversations in an attempt to achieve global domination.

Yeah, Sup Forums is no different.

(You)s are like crack.

Look to the bright side: you're still free to access any website you wish. In my country, government and its corporatists tried to push customers to buy data plans for websites. You wouldn't have access to the world wide web, but rather you would only pick a few sites to browse. Sort of like:
>Add Youtube access for $2
>Add Facebook access for $5
>Access to other websites? Only for $10000000 shekels!

Needless to say, people were enraged, and the idea was buried. For now...

The problem is that it's become so difficult to discover new and good sites. Everything is so saturated now I bet you don't even "surf" the web anymore, just click on Sup Forums, some online shopping, maybe 1 or 2 niche/hobby forums, and troubleshooting on search engines.

Why would I pay someone money to harvest my own data?

the iphone in 2007 was to blame for all of this cancer

DELETE MOBILE POSTERS
DELETE
DELETE

it's called "taxes" and everyone pays them in some form or another, unless you live innawoods

Great suggestion, Thanks!

They can be like a kick in the nuts too.

Human beings are all nasty language and tool using and making chimps. This is what the species does and will do with everything until it begins to modify its own neurobiology. Same old same old last few thousand years really, just with new tools.

Women ruined the internet.

Know the feel. Good to know there's still a few of us out there.

I dont use any kind of social media sans this place, the only accounts i have are firefox sync and the youtube one i made in 2008 and some from a semi-popular latino website, i do use my smartphone but only for games, emulation, clove. youtube and endless desktop ricing.

The truly saddest thing is that i no longer know how to browse the internet, this place is the only one i can have any sort of "fun" with.

in 10 years our world will turn into something similar to Deus-Ex

This, I feel like my browser history is becoming less diverse every year. It's rare to stumble up something new and worthwhile, like someone's blog with years' of well-written articles.

You don't even have to be a good reader anymore since everybody is moving to video for the normies/children/portable users.

>news sites making a full paragraph out of every sentence
>embedded videos everywhere, sometimes completely irrelevant, often autoplaying

It's becoming the new TV that people in some countries just seemed to leave on all day.

worse than deus-ex
we're getting cyberpunk right now, but only the shitty oppressive parts

>The truly saddest thing is that i no longer know how to browse the internet

>This, I feel like my browser history is becoming less diverse every year.

>I bet you don't even "surf" the web anymore

This is all true.

What's the fix? How do we get back to surfing?

Neocities?

probably the destruction of wikipedia

red pill me on wikipedia

how would that help

where do you go when you want information on a particular topic

usually wikipedia, either directly or through google

destroy big corp making a buck off mass surveylance and advertisements.

Ah, I get it. Wikipedia dies, return of smaller specialty websites on topics.

So, how do we kill the wikipedia

I'd love to see the Mirai botnet used as a means to corrupt Googles analytics and to trigger the watchlist keywords of all the goverment agencies worldwide.Basically, making all their shit worthless.

source code's open, get working

the million dollar question

intercept donations?

more or less impossible
just ddos the site for eternity

Wikipedia is one of the good guys, you assholes.

It's just starting to develop itself naturally

it's destroyed any need for the average person to surf the web for information, which was what we were talking about

personally I'm fine with surfing being dead

>naturally
what does this even mean within the context of multi-layered ad services in charge of what content is funded?

Wikipedia is bloated
Wikiedia is a manipulative tool altered by governments and corporations jarib.github.io/user-history/
Wikipedia is run by homogenous group of people
Wikipedia articles are written by homogenous closeted circlejerc clubs

Bloated in what sense? CPU/Memory/Bandwidth usage? Too much content?

As for being run and written by homogeneous people, that's an issue Wikipedia is trying to solve.

>Wikiedia is a manipulative tool altered by governments and corporations jarib.github.io/user-history/

Wikipedia is open for both editing and scrutiny by anyone. That's how editors are able to sniff out gov/corp whitewashing. It's a double-edged sword.

It has tons of unnececarry javascript and gui features. 5 years ago Wikipedia was pure html and ran on a toaster.
Yes, but you have to look at article's history to find out if whether it was altered or not.

>en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=596027323
GOD DAMN CIA MANIPULATING INFORMATION
THEY CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS

Haven't been outside the walls of 4chin in years except to troll or dl a free book.

Sup Forums is our walled garden.

>If I could do text-only, no-javascript and no-images browsing, I'd like that again.

Use Lynx

i guess i got an sdf.org shell account to retreat to. they got gopher sites, bbs-style talker, text boards, a bunch of old unixy crap to play with. interact with the outside world with email only

Sites that literally invent stories about things that never happen out of thin air. Try googling it

>tfw I made my youtube account in 2006 so I could watch softcore porn.

>take in propaganda from facebook and spam it in conversations

This is unreal. Their critical thinking skills were already fucked but at this point they cannot hold even the simplest conversation. You just get a blanc stare before they spout the next meme.

and the wall is made of shit

I'm thinking of just boycotting every major service. There's no reason to read news any more because every news site is slanted and corrupt. Websites now provide a terrible UX by convention: "SUBSCRIBE TO THIS ADVANCED BULLSHIT COURSE" *close* "OH ARE YOU REALLY TRYING TO LEAVE!!! FOR ONE TIME ONLY" You go to a page and it loads fucking Facebook, Twitter, and Joogle trackers, along with trackers for half-a-dozen different advertisers who correlate every piece of data about you over the web.

Everything requires Facebook. YouTube is fucking dumb. Wikipedia written by morons. Even Sup Forums has gone to shit as it became SJW controlled and never provided anonymity to begin with. I think I might just become one of those paranoid neckbeards like Stallman. I'll use a Thinkpad 5000 with Libreboot and anonymize all my traffic. I might not even use the web. Just disallow javascript, and only browse journal articles and books. For discussion I'll use an IRC client from the 90s talking to people twice my age about the glory days even though I wasn't alive for them.

Sup Forums will have to go too ... but honestly how many of you just browse this place because you have nothing better to do? None of the people here are informed and the rest are outright retarded underage faggot. This would probably be one of the easiest places to boycott. How did things end up this dystopian? The web used to be forums run by autists on autistic shit and we didn't have mass data correlation and backdoors put in everything. Now you always have to wonder

I'd argue that the wall is made out of memes (which means the same thing more or less)

>400lb. neckbeard pretending he actually talks to people
>and then even in his own fantasy he's mad about memes

What a time to be alive. Some pro-tips though: if you're gonna cry about "critical thinking skills" you should probably be able to spell "blank".

FYI

Sup Forums is my guilty pleasure. It's like cigarettes or candy: knowingly harmful but hopelessly addictive. The Sup Forums leakage and weak trolling/flaming gets worse all the time, and I'm always thinking about what Hiroshima and Google are doing with my activity here. Yet this is the only social place I have left on the internet.

>How did things end up this dystopian? The web used to be forums run by autists on autistic shit and we didn't have mass data correlation and backdoors put in everything. Now you always have to wonder

Blame accessible video bandwidth and "digital natives" (parents replacing giving a shit with electronics).

>be me in summer, in a foreign country
>family trip, eating lunch at some semi-fancy 'yacht' club because there aren't a lot of options
>what I'm assuming to be very upper middle-class women in their late 30s are having drinks and salads on the next table over
>one with a toddler, the other pregnant
>shallow gossip and fake laughter is continually interrupted by toddler wanting his mother's attention and affection
>she pulls out her iphone, props it up on a plastic Thomas the tank engine toy on the table and lets it run a playlist of Peppa the pig on Youtube at high volume
>whenever the kids tries to itneract with the phone, the screen or the toy used as a stand, the mother interrupts him and palces it further away on the table

>back home, at electronics store looking for a decent USB 12V car adapter
>overhear a father having trouble deciding between a 220€ and a 180€ rtablet for his son
>he finalyl settles for the 180€ version because his son is "only 6 after all"

You can't even imagine how bad the idiot box-digital sedative generation is going to make it.

IT WAS SEARCH INDEXING ALL ALONG YOU FUCKING FAGGOTS
>opens up the commercialization of looking for shit
>opens up the ability of corporations to redirect traffic as they please, legally and with the consumer's implicit consent of "getting rid of stuff I don't want to look at"
>leads certain sites to grow exponentially
>prevents other sites from ever gaining traction, despite a technically superior implementation
>easy access to trend analytics, big data

Search engines are why the web is consolidating into a single, unified pile of corporatized shit.

There were generations before them that grew up on TV and video games in every household. They won't be much worse off.

Got this one for my phone, app is called
>text browser

it was doomed the moment you could make money of it

>fonposter acting like he's not part of the problem

Sort of. It's splitting into two things.

There's the television 2.0 part of the web that's all about videos. This is youtube, netflix, facebook, and partially even Sup Forums and reddit.

Then there is the "old" web that is still around but much smaller than it was a decade ago. Forums and chat rooms still exist, but they are mighty lonely a lot of the time. And the sense of adventure and discovery is not nearly as great as it once was, if it is there at all.

BUT

There's this whole other world out there of twitter, twitch, discord, snapchat, and other new services that is all the rage with the kids now. That's where the fire is still burning. It's up to you to get with it.

>netflix
>facebook
>youtube
>different from twitter, twitch
snapchat is eh at best, the actual implementation is shit
discord is alright but I'd be amazed if they weren't farming out your data, and it's functionally only moderately different from basic IRC

LoI i like my tiny phone computer, i like my normal computer too, you can fuck yourself back to jerking it to your aunts on face book, something i dont use, you fat gargoyle

POO

IN

LOO

>That's where the fire is still burning.

Yeah, a dumpster fire.

Poo in the loo back to you i live in country with toliets, but i shit in the woods, while camping, somthing your fat fuck cant do, catch diabetes, limp dick sissy

Yes, they are absolutely different from twitter and twitch. There is a cultural difference. Twitter is the driving force for memes these days. It has replaced Sup Forums in that regard.

You got too old, user. Mark my words, in a few years there will be a wave of people who look back on the twitch era with heavy nostalgia. Streaming is still in the wild west time period. But soon, even it will be tamed and gone.

wow you're really sensitive about being indian I guess that dysentery has you pretty butt-blasted. Don't worry one day if you save your rupees you can afford to buy a loo just like a first worlder!

I barely go to 4chins anymore. Underage morons ruined everything with their shitposting.

Unfortunately only cripplechan seems to have hold on. All other imageboards die in a matter of month or are just porn dumps.
