Learn about buffers, cache and linux memory management.

Anyway try free -m and look at the line +/- buffers/cache. Thats probably the line you want to see.

Increasing memory usage could be due to a userland application having a memory leak. Restarting that application would solve the problem.

That said, by the looks of things, your computer is using only 5 GB of RAM right now, down from the 9 GB suggested in your chart.

I know what caches is dude, but Windows memory usage stays constant if you leave it alone.

My memory usage is under 1GB with Chromium and MVP watching videos. I'm using Debian with XFCE4. You should consider the possibility that the programs you use are shit and have memory leaks. The only time I ever make it past 2GB usage is when I'm compiling a bunch of shit.

If you're lucky you can use

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

to update the program that has a memory leak. If that doesn't work you need to download a stable distro without a memory leak and install that.

Oh, it's in a VM... although it's a 30 second time period, so you don't really show that there's constant memory usage over the long term.
