So are tablets any more than dumb toys yet?

So are tablets any more than dumb toys yet?
I seriously cannot even fathom what purpose they might possibly serve.

The smaller ones are good for shitposting/music in bed. Like the Nexus 7 was perfect for laying back and holding with both hands in portrait position.

You can take notes on some of them and it's pretty comfy.

Expandable storage ones are good for quick access to porn on the go.

Good for things like porn or youtube in bed/on the shitter

Carrying a desktop OS in your pocket is wonderful

>porn
>music
>youtube
so still dumb toys then?

The Ipad serves as the perfect notebook if you have the 12.9 and a Apple Pencil.
It will never replace your laptop but tablets have evolved, no matter how much Sup Forums's autism wants to say otherwise.

No, tools that serve a purpose you're too autistic to care for.

Why would you want a tablet? Android ones don't even get security updates and are redundant after a year. The Nexus 7 2013 isn't getting any security updates now.

I use mine for my art

It's almost like Android tablets aren't the only kind of tablets to exist!

For bedtime use really. My phone is too small to watch movies on and web browsing is also better on a 10'' screen.

I would never pay iPad prices for a tablet for such basic use. You can get ones that do the above fine for cheap these days.

Oh look at that nice pretty Apple overpriced tablet with no expandable storage and lovked down os!

Where did I say anything about iPads?

I travel a lot a it's pretty useful for playing old games while on the road, watching movies and sometimes working. Writing there isn't optimal but you get used to. I have an old Nvidia shield and it's been working flawlessly for two years or so.

He's expressing his insecurities. Don't interrupt him.

what windows tablet?
Thinking about getting a Dell Venue 7"

My man. I'd but a new Nexus 7 in an instant.

Had a Venue 8 Pro and it was great, switched to a Chuwi Hi8 and it was great other than the shitty screen. Got a Teclast X80 in the mail right now.

They're great for shitty parents.

Set it up somewhere the kid can see and let mindless programming rot its brain for a bit.

Im still in awe how many views these toy channels with shitty Elsa Spider-Man etc compilations get

I was under the impression they get botted (they probably do) but after talking to some parents of young children they actually do watch that shit. For hours on end if you don't stop them.

get your mom on the internet within a safe little app-based ecosystem

that's it

I'd rather carry around my iPad mini than ~10kg of Textbooks.

Can you play mobile games on a tablet or no?

tablets are great eroge machine

my kids love their tablets, they mainly just watch youtube & do social media shit on em

If you get the right one that can run actual desktop applications, yes.

This, they're for preteen kids

This, not to mention said OS already run on ARM and able to run actual desktop applications now, so we will get even more choices in the future.

I dunno but i can play PC games on mine.

I use one solely for TouchOSC for VJing
Super handy

They are good for reading pdfs if you don't wanna carry a laptop.
As an entertainment device they are ok for watching youtube videos, browsing the web and they are also good for browsing photos.
They are decent for project management since you don't have to carry a laptop around.

In general they are good as consuming and monitoring devises, but terrible at content creation. In the end they can't do anything a laptop can't do better except for being easier to carry around.

This and watching youtube

Also for remotely controlling X32 and M32 mixing boards

This

>tfw I carry a tablet and 10 kg of textbooks

I dont use my nexus 7 2013 anymore now that my phone's 5.5 inches

They can.
What the fuck are you on about?
I installed every software that I previously use on my laptop and all works fine.
Stop generalizing tablets.

Nexus 7 was perfect for replacing your car's head unit

I was thinking about picking up an x80 pro because of how good it is for the price. You just cannot beat the chinks when it comes to cheap electronics

E-books/comics and movie/video watching mostly

i can't think of anything else

the real question is when is this 2-in-1 meme going to end

Your typical iPad inspired tablet is a meme. If you're buying a traditional tablet after 2016, then I have to say you've fell for the meme a little too late.

>Android tablets have always been shit
>iPads are much better but are admittedly limited for anything outside of reading PDFs and playing tablet games
>small tablets like the Nexus 7 and iPad Mini are getting killed off slowly by 5.5 inch and bigger smartphones
>laptops are getting lighter and lighter

The tablet with a full blown OS is the future, really. Google and MS understand this and Apple has it's thumb up it's ass and decided that iOS was in anyway suitable for more serious work with it's iPad Pro tablets and adding a gimmicky touch bar on the MacBook Pro.

The tablets that we think about now won't go away completely, but it'll stay around for more niche purposes. We are going to see more Surface Pro type devices in the end, really. Maybe Apple will follow suite too, or else we won't have them around anymore.

It won't soon.
Heck it will probably just getting bigger with windows hitting ARM without crippling the OS

I got my Air 2 initially for work (self-employed, doing some iOS dev), and I don't know if I could have justified getting it solely for personal use, but it's definitely handy.

It's a web browsing machine when I'm cosy in bed, a fancy remote for watching TV on my desktop (monitor swivels round), there are good apps for my bank and credit cards... etc.

I don't read on it much/at all outside of web articles. I have a real eink kindle for text and I don't generally read comics/manga. I watch video sometimes but I generally prefer larger screens for that.

Great for kids and other reasons when out or for business. I'm not a tablet person but their reason to exist are obvious

Expensive toys!

Tab is for Sup Forums and porn.

They are only good for reading comic books, viewing pics and shit like that. other than that, they have no purpose

the screen is too small to enjoy videos

>photogragrapher/videomaker
(Ipad mini tho)
Ext monitor
Easy Social access/sharing stuff
Neat Apps
Portfolio always there
Nice when traveling, can watch movies, play games etc

IMO for my profession it's best to have a tablet for general purposes, pc/mac laptop for editing, desktop mothership for heavy edit and archive and all heavy duty stuff

This. When I got my iPhone 6 Plus I quit using both my Nexus 7 and my iPad Mini. I pull them out occasionally for nostalgia but inevitably shut them off after twenty minutes. Tablets are over and Windows tablets are a special kind of complete shit.

Still toys.

Having a tablet and a decent sized phone is much better than just having a phablet

I use mine mostly for reading comic book scans and pdf files, works fine for that. Other than that desktop and a phone are far superior

No it's not. That's complete redundancy.

How is having a small screened device and a much larger screened device complete redundancy?

Fills a niche between my phone and laptop. Games, reading, writing, video, browsing the web, some shopping.
Bigger screen than my phone, and less cumbersome than my laptop while commuting on the bus or slouching on the sofa. Screen is also a comfy size when I'm at my computer and using the iPad to watch video.

Are there any huge chinese tablets yet? I'd like something bigger than 14" for sheet music.

Sup Forums is the wrong place to ask about tablets as it's frequented by Asperger's Syndrome sufferers who enjoy tinkering obsessively with computers.

Tablets don't really provide an opportunity for tinkering, as they provide slick, secure and reliable access to useful software applications (or "apps") without any complications, so naturally Sup Forums can't see the point of them.

Furthermore, Sup Forums posters tend to have oversized phones, which makes possession of a tablet even more pointless in their eyes. The concept of a book-sized device that you can use on train, bus or airplane without having to squint at has no merit to them since they very rarely travel anywhere.

If pushed, Sup Forums users may grudgingly recommend Windows tablets, as they have a "real" operating system. The fact that Windows is designed for computers with keyboards and mice, and is a terrible touch OS with barely any touch-optimised software, means that these "tablets" are really laptops without keyboards, running software designed for desktops.

Finally, you will hear mention of the Nexus 7 2013. A three year old device with poor build quality and no SD card slot. This is because a few Sup Forums residents dabbled with the device when it was new and exciting, and have refused to move on with the times.

Here's what I use my Android tablet for:

Torrents (comics and movies)
Reading comics
Reading Manga (via MangaRock)
Games (Baldur's Gate 2, Heroes of M&M)
Emulation (PSP, PS1, Genesis, GBA, NDS)
Online banking
Email
Facebook (via Tinfoil)
Accessing e-copies of stuff in Dropbox (plane tickets etc)
Task lists in OneNote
Listening to music
Netflix
GPS for driving
Phone book, address book, diary
Porn
Learning Japanese ("Human Japanese")

Honestly, the need for a laptop grows less and less each day. Especially with free Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps. The only reason I use my laptop these days is when I need to do some serious typing... Mouse and keyboard integration with Android is pretty lousy.

>I use my phone for all that

Enjoy your early onset astigmatism

But there are no good android tablets

You must suffer from an astounding lack of imagination.

Hello Pedro

Define good. $150 can get you an android tablet that can do all the things I just listed. If you want a fantastic screen and speakers, spend more.

Good Android tablets include: Shield K1, Galaxy Tab S, Tab A 10.1 with s-pen, Zenpad Z580ca, Nexus 9, Pixel...

and then software updates stop after a year

>early onset astigmatism
Citation please. The best research at the moment says that lack of sunlight is the reason for the myopia epidemic, not near work.

Additionally, astigmatism (asymmetry in the eyeball's curve) doesn't generally develop in old age (presbyopia is the only universal age-related eye condition). It's generally found to be present when one is found to be myopia/hyperopia, usually in childhood or teens/early twenties.

I read PDFs on them. You not being able to fathom a purpose other than using it as a toy isn't the tablet's problem. It's your lack of imagination (or maybe just you being surrounded by toys all the time)

>the disadvantages of a laptop without the advantages on one

>lack of sunlight is the reason for the myopia

Thank you for that eye-opening statement.

Not necessarily. Anything with "stock" Android tends to have very good support. I'd say unless you buy chink shit, you've got a good few years... And also remember Google have decoupled many features of the OS and rolled them into the Play Store, so even if you don't get Android Whipplescrumptious, you're still getting the essentials via the Play Store app.

It's not as obvious as you'd expect (most people think it's directly caused by near work).
