Yeah, I did think about all this. I could plug an 8+ TB disk into my NAS with eSATA and set up a task to replicate there... I'm still on a free 3 month trial with Amazon Drive so I haven't wasted any money yet. When my trial's up I'll choose whether to stick with the cloud or do the local backups instead. Being a digital hoarder is a pain.

You could (and should) store your personal data with a 3-2-1 Backup Strategy. While the less important movies could be stored on a single disk + Openwrt.
The benefit of storing your sensitive data locally + local and offsite backup is that you can implement real data protection, such as ZFS + ECC RAM, checksums for each files + backup of said checksums with parity, parity for all your files, + encryption, + split archiving.
If your wife spills orange juice into your NAS, right now you're fucked. If more than one HDD in your NAS dies at the same time, you're fucked. Your rebuild times are horrendous I would imagine, and you have no protection against bit rot (bit flips). Your drives are exposed to more wear and tear than they need to because you also use them for PLEX.

I've got over 8TB of stuff right now stored on my server. Used to be all backed up to a 8TB Nas but once it got full I just plugged in a 3TB external hdd for new backups. Now that the nas is full I just leave it powered off. Same with the external drive but I just turn it on long enough to do a backup then power it off again. The Backup drives should last a long long time due to the low wear on the drives. (least I hope).

The real problem about it is that its filemanager is a bit meh.
You can only create folders via the web file manager.
Via http you can upload files to existing folders, but ofc for a mass uploading it's not the best solution.
To upload entire folders at once you can use FTP upload (which also support resume), but then all the files in that folder will be uploaded in the root, so if you had a nicely organized porn folder you get a mess.
There's also a way to send the files inline so you can use it to stream them on your browser.
It also has a nice feature to only let YOU download your files (in case lets say a bot find the url of your file by random guessing IDs), but then again you have to apply that feature to each file (there's a select all button but it only selects files in the current folder, not subfolders)

Every cloud service that I've tried allow you to keep stuff exclusively on the cloud without having to also have a local copy.
And even if they don't allow for selective sync (where you choose which folder to sync and which to only keep on their servers), you can just upload via browser and never use the syncing program.
