Linux Arch DE

Which Desktop environnement should I choose for arch, I will probably install it next week.I am looking for something simple.

Xfce

No desktop environment, a minimalist system doesn't require such cumbersome graphics.

fluxbox

This, it's comfy and stable.

Gnome is the golden boy of Linux for a reason.

XFCE if you have 2GB of ram or less, else GNOME3

GNOME

- can run Wayland daily RIGHT NOW
- can manage sandboxed distro-agnostic applications RIGHT NOW
- supports hidpi screens RIGHT NOW

Awesome window manager

XFCE is great. MATE is pretty decent too.

>sandboxed distro-agnostic applications
flatpak? no packages

flatpak.org/apps.html

Use lxde like any sane person

i3

this, theres no reason for anything else

Ok, here's my take:

- If you've installed Arch you must be interested in customizing your experience.
- If not, well there are better distros than Arch, Arch is literally only good for customization because it's basically just a big one repo.
- If so, choose every tool you're going to use. My favorite is openbox + PCManFM and several utilities around it.

Most supported DE Gnome 3 really is a bother to be honest and the rest (with the exception of KDE maybe) are already programs bunched together instead of a complete user experience. So why not customize your experience? Grow a neckbeard today!

If you aint tiling, you're doing it wrong

Currently usin Xfce on mine (cinnamon ate battery life like a bitch)

...

What kind of laptop?

How does one change the icons on tint2? Also which volume applet are you using?

i3
as simple and efficient as it gets

how do I rice with all those pastel color themes?

Why not KDE?

...

ideapad s10. it's shit.

lxappearance allows you to choose icons. those are the ultra-flat
volumeicon

Thank you.

Cinnamon, personal favourite

also i3. fuck >DE

openbox with tint2 and pcmanfm
dpaste.de/Kde6
>ob/rc.conf
dpaste.de/jzO6
>tint2rc.conf

Openbox with thunar for file manager, firefox for browser, feh for imageviewer, mpv for video, cmus for music, and tint2 for panel. Very nice DE setup.

compton & pcmanfm --desktop & (sleep 3s && pcmanfm --desktop-off) &

i3. But why even use a DE? Use Openbox or 2bwm

you'll be shunned fro mthe arch community if you dont pick i3, gnome, openbox, or some bastardized mix of components using xfce.

nice.
because its bad, whats with your top left corner, you only need one selector m8.

My Thunar has a funny issue where if I rename a file too quickly it crashse.
Like, go F2 -> rename -> enter really quick

This is how you spot a poorfag

They have less money, therefore they are bad people

I3 or bust

i3.
xfce if u can't deal with dat clean tiling.

>Arch

stop using timewaster meme distros and stick with something that actually has a fucking installer.

If you really want the full DE thing, XFCE.
If you don't to be a pleb, use a WM only.

Tiling:
- herbstluftwm
- bspwm
- spectrwm
- xmonad
(Try i3 if you want, but it's pretty eh)

Dynamic:
- windowchef
- cwm
- wmutils
- mcwm for tr00 mnml

If you want an inbetween, something like flux/openbox

>stop using timewaster meme distros and stick with something that actually has a fucking installer.

So Archbang
it's basically Arch + installer

Xfce is a good compromise between speed and aesthetics
Default Xfce looks like shit though, but there are good themes like numix or arc

literally the only correct answer

What font is that in the bar?

You mean Arch Anywhere?

I run a minimal arch system with 500 packages
openbox+tint2+pcmanfm

use obconf and lxappearance for customization

>I am looking for something simple

Ubuntu

What makes pcmanfm better than thunar?

This is a known bug and has been patched. Find the patched version or update your Thunar.

Oh weird
Maybe my Thunar's not updating properly for some reason
Thanks!

>Enjoy being PoisonTapped
good thing i never leave my home

But you do leave your computer

>PoisonTap emulates an Ethernet device (eg, Ethernet over USB/Thunderbolt) – by default, Windows, OS X and Linux recognize an ethernet device, automatically loading it as a low-priority network device and performing a DHCP request across it

What?

It literally doesn't matter

What do you guys think of Linux Mint?

>depends on systemd
No thank you.

God dammit this is on the wiki but I'll type it out and add this to my shitpost copypasta folder.

Below are some often used options
It's a matter of taste, ask yourself what you expect from a DE first.

> Full batteries included with programs but little customization
Gnome; heaviest, most features
Unity; Ubuntu default, many people don't like the aesthetic (tailored for Ubuntu though)
KDE; Has its very own ideas about design and colors, see if you like it

> Full DE, but less RAM use and less shiny animations
XFCE; Light, very stable, relatively good customization
LXQT; Light, somewhat newer
MATE; Okay, can be very minimal if desired

> Minimal
No full DE, but the tasks that are usually handled by the DE handled by separate programs of your choice (if desired), you will need:
- startx or a display manager ("login screen"); Lightdm or GDM
- a window manager: i3 (tiling), fluxbox/openbox (floating), awesome (dynamic)
- a dock/bar/launcher/...: tint2, plank, cairo-dock, ...
- a notifications client: dunst/xfce-notify/whatever

> Others
Budgie; DE made for solus, arguably beautiful but buggy according to some
Cinnamon; the Mint DE, see above
Deepin; Also pretty aesthetic imo, but 'chink botnet' according to Sup Forums, very complete, hardly customizable
Has some of the more non-mainstream WMs, some easy to configure, others not. Pick one if you have a good reason but I'd advise not to if you never tried a WM before

RAM comparison:
brendaningram.com/article/ram-usage-of-various-linux-desktop-environments/

Good if you want something that just werks, or if you're installing on a family/shared computer.
If you are tech literate and have the time/interest to play around with Linux I wouldn't recommend installing it.

>Gnome; heaviest, most features
When did it get heavier than KDE?

Was when I used it, checked first 5~ish credible looking google results, is it not anymore?

Last time I saw a comparison KDE was using a bit more RAM, but not like there was a big difference anyway.

What would you recommend for a techie wannabe?

Antergos to learn how arch works, then after a while install arch and learn how to manage everything on your own.

i3 if you want the best GUI possible.

If you insist on a DE, go with XFCE or MATE. Budgie isn't half bad if you don't mind lack of customization options.

Thanks user.

Noty him but Ubuntu or Mint
Mostly because the thousands of answers. Most other distros may have bugs you're not yet ready to solve.

Plasma 5, XFCE, or MATE.

Ubuntu Unity if you like Macs.
Ubuntu MATE or Linux Mint Cinnamon if you like Windows.

I've tried them all. Answer is:

Cinnamon > *

Thousands of answers doesn't make problem solving really easier.
I'd say it makes things even harder.

I just put that on my potato (atom n270), with lightDM as displaymanager, and BOIS, where have i been living all this time. Fuck xfce.

I enjoy Plasma 5.

Ubuntu

I don't know man, I've been using Linux Mint as my main OS for about 8 months while learning the ropes, and it works just fine for my purposes.
If I had a problem no more than 4 minutes of Google searching and I found my answer.

Openbox, of course.

xfce

or skip the de entirely and go with i3

>i3 if you want the best GUI possible
>i3
>best
>i3

xfce

cinnamon.

is this the new desktop thread???
