>turn on pc >open discord and join server >if nobody is on I'll just browse the web watching videos and lurking here >if people are on I'll usually get a "hey user come play _vidya_" >if no one is playing vidya or someone is playing a single player game I'll usually just talk while scrolling through the endless suicide inducing facebook feed
The amount of time I've sat in front of a computer screen doing unproductive shit is starting to get to me. I could be a programming wizard or speak a couple languages, but instead I'm just a winbaby who plays multiplayer vidya for fun.
How do I rid myself of this vicious cycle? I'm thinking of just wiping my drive and installing a debian based distro - but I feel like I should at least keep a small windows partition seeing as I paid for shit which I won't be able to touch unless I'm on windows. But then I'll come to the problem of just booting into a windows partition because it's what I'm used to and comfy for me.
I feel like all I have to do is commit and throw myself at the task, and once I get interested I'll find everything more enjoyable than wasting my hours away on vidya - it's just getting actually beginning and doing something I struggle with
Any tips for leaving the windows/vidya lifestyle behind (for the most part) and welcoming a more productive GNU/Linux, computer literate, open and freedoms lifestyle?
My video card is so old anyway (nvidia 560 or some shit), so the switch to Linux would probably benefit be hugely in games which natively support - and apparently GPU passthrough loses very little performance. So if it can be done with one video card I'd easily wipe my drive and never look back

I don't know. When I came here I already spoke 3 languages (5 now, translator). And moonlighted as a web developer.
I'd say turn off your computer and go do something with your life or something man.
Wyatt Anderson
Switching to linux won't fill the void. And apparently we have a case of "waah I'm too lazy to do anything with my life plz help me Sup Forums". Just go outside, organize your life with varied and healthy shit. Get off the grid once in a while, stay away from computer screens for a day, then two days and finally a whole week.
Ryan Stewart
I hired a lifecoach that would kick me in the nuts when he felt I was slacking on making forward progress, such as slacking on my hobbies and things I had confirmed with him that I wanted to learn. And I mean that literally, he got a spare key to my house and would barge in randomly to check on me and he would kick my sack inside out if I was fucking around. Changed my life.
Isaac Harris
I can speak up to 4 languages (5 if you consider dialect a language) fluently and I'm no translator.

Minimalism, genuinely converting to christianity, working out, learning guitar, and adapting a counter-cultural lifestyle in general
minimalism was the most helpful of them all though, as it is an actual change in your psyche and worldview. fitness makes you feel great and will probably eliminate depression in itself due to the release of endorphins and adrenaline, but it does not solve the underlying issues in your life. playing an instrument is a blast and a truly beautiful thing, but that too does not solve the real issues at heart. christianity is the most helpful of all of these decisions, but i assume that most on Sup Forums are euphoric.
so if anything, at least look into minimalism. i tried to pull my story from the archive but rbt searching is down right now, and i don't feel like hunting down a bunch of links again so i'll just share this one
>minimalism was the most helpful of them all though >christianity is the most helpful of all of these decisions
So which one was actually the most helpful?

What languages can you speak, just curious?
It's tough because I've just been waiting for University to start for months (dropped out first semester). There's not much to do in the place where I live, most people just drink or smoke meth. Work only gives me one shift a week and there's not much in terms of decent jobs around here.
Besides going out every week or two with my mates, and going to work once a week I'm just stuck staring at a screen - I need to start reading I think Should probably try not touching my phone/computer for a day or two, there's pretty much zero other things to do though Could use with one of those actually What languages? >converting to christianity >2016
Already work out though and it's really one of the best things going for me atm, it's got to the point where everything is pretty routine though so there's not much learning involved. Never have had any musical talent though

>christianity is the most helpful of all of these decisions From personal experience, this was also the case for me. I was a very aggressive atheist, anti-theist but I grew out of it. Don't assume you know it all if you're an atheist now.
Easton Torres
True christianity, following the words of the bible is always going to be counter-cultural, what are you implying? Look around at what is acceptable today - sex, drugs, drinking (drinking the fruit of the vine is not a sin in of itself, but overindulgence is), cohabitation, and other anti-social behaviors
also I am not a catholic, and no I was not already christian

How hard is learning Spanish, I've heard it's one of the easiest to learn? Ultimately I want to learn Italian but apparently it makes a lot more sense to learn Spanish first, then tackle Italian
Mason Roberts
1) Reach the conclusion that believing in "a" creator is the most rational position 2) Study other religions, particularly eastern religions 3) Read the New Testament 4) Realise that Jesus is describing something which applies to most religions 5) Realise that Christianity is the most perfect form and the best adapted to our cultural heritage and sensibilities, which shape our betterment
Even most physicists are beginning to reach 1) now.
Nicholas Brown
What I fear though for most of the anons who claim to be christians on Sup Forums is that they always seem to leave out the spiritual aspects of it
christianity is a spiritual religion, if you actually believe in the bible then there is a holy spirit, which is endowed upon those who genuinely repent and come to a belief in christ, submitting to him and making him lord over them
what caused my conversion was a strange experience that prompted me to read the bible, and around the end of the OT I was praying one night and received the holy ghost
naturally this will be a claim that will invite derision, but the thing is, christianity, like any other religion, has spirituality to it
if we just accept that some divine power foreign to us is responsible for creation, then go to church twice a year, you haven't actually been saved
Oliver Hill
>Dont you need actual faith? Everyone exercises faith on a daily basis. We just choose what to put our faith in. No one has perfect knowledge of anything, we see enough information to "convince" us, then have faith in our conclusions.
The first step to understanding is to realise that we're not really all that different. Atheists make the same "failings" they accuse Christians of.
Juan Lewis
I'm not saying spirituality is not important. To me it is -the- most important aspect. But it can scare away newcomers if not approached properly. Atheists don't want to hear about that shit.

Well Spanish is by far the easiest, especially when it comes to listening comprehension and writing because every written letter is pronounced except for "h" naturally. As opposed to French which counts a buttload of "muted" letters for no fucking reason.

desu i, in my young age, thought the same couple of weeks ago. So I quit playing vidya on a daily bases and learned some languages myself. I started to make useful applications (useful to myself what so ever) in angular and php. i learned some php frameworks including slim and zend. The next project will be in ruby and or python with flask

Yeah, this seems like quite a common thing to do but I guess I just don't really know what type of shit I can do if I bothered to put effort into programming. I'm sort of interested in Python because it's commonly used to deal with large data sets (also something I'm interested in), but going from complete beginner to manipulating millions of data points seems like a jump

I've never been into the whole, "new year new me" shit but this does seem like a good idea. I'd happily uninstall vidya but social media is a different beast all together. Unfortunately means of communication between me and mates resides around facebook messenger, making it essential that I keep facebook - the king of time wasting
If I had an option to never be presented with my newsfeed and purely only have the messenger I'd take that in a second. However, it is good to see what everyone my age in my area is doing with their lives
fuck is this an addiction speaking?
Alexander Nguyen
Do not conform with any sort of religion or dogmatic ideology, as they are all close minded and will prevent you from learning. Define your own beliefs, and respect the choice of others, as long as they respect yours. Read, but mind what you read. All that time you spent reading about homeopathy could be spent learning a new language, for example. Stop watching porn and masturbating until you really need to. It will be more enjoyable, and youll feel way better.

Do not conform with any sort of closed-mindedness or dogmatic secularism, as they are all close minded and will prevent you from learning. Uphold your own beliefs, and define the choice of others, as long as they continue to be misled. Read, but mind what you read. Arabic is quite difficult desu. I came to the conclusion that learning languages is easy for anyone regardless of their origins. Speaking foreign languages with no accent can be a real challenge. Some mother tongues (with varied sounding consonants, flat and stressed, nasal, guttural and thrilled sounds) can make it easier. Arabic and Hebrew comes to mind. While other mother tongues can be very crippling when trying to learn different phonology (Asian languages for example).
Parker Gutierrez
Such a fucking normie.
Nathaniel Martin
He's right tho. Internet slang and meme speak aren't the way to go if you want to learn English.
Christopher Morris
Where I live it's mostly just facebook messenger because group texting doesn't work very well Android/iMessage - and everyone has facebook already so it's just convenient I guess. If it was entirely my choice I'd be as far away as possible Mostly on macOS when I'm not playing any sort of gaymes but I'll check the appstore on here I guess, probably has the same shit, cheers How the FUCK do I roll my r's though? I speak spanish and english. I have always wondered, which language to learn last? Arabic, Hindi, or chinese?
I don't care about culture, I care about what people I am more likely to run into. As for sheer numbers obviously chinese is the better choice, but who knows how fucking long that would take, with their drawn alphabet seemingly not being standardized
Luke Lopez
>not being standardized
It is very well standardized, it's just a gigantic needlessly complicated pain in the ass
Tyler Green
Unless you're French you can't. It's the same mechanism as whistling, except that you roll your tongue slightly in contact with your alveolar ridge near your frontal teeth. On your first tries never try to *roll* it for too long, just click it until you make it right. Don't forget that's a pulmonic sound meaning that (like whistling) you need to huff some air. If you can't, just watch some Speedy Gonzales.
Xavier Robinson
So which of the three is most worth learning? Hindi, Arabic, or chinese?
I only said that because I did a quick google image search on chinese alphabet and each image had different style lettering, with different positioning of the shapes. How can you learn like that?
Ethan Martinez
I'm supposed to be working but I'm browsing Sup Forums instead.
Wyatt Young
I know jack shit about Hindi but it never resonated pretty to my ears (female sounded too high pitched and male too a bumpatibuppiditydoo). Chinese is balls to the walls hard and very impractical because of the many stressed sounds and the artificial difficulty writing system. Arabic is actually interesting since it's a semitic language it can prove to be a real challenge but is very rewarding because of it covers every possible sounding phonation.
Brayden Lewis
Me too, I'm just buying time until my shift is over, I just hope no one is going to check on my task progress, and my heart races everytime I hear my colleagues phone ringing thinking it was mine. Less than one hour to go...

Most or all of this OP. I mean if you want to learn programming you will need computer but I think user think of it more of a temporarily cleansing so yeah take a break.
And I'm actually in similar boat as you. Switching to GNU/Linux full time may or may not help. Played a lot of LoL with friends, used discord. Smoked weed too if I had the money or if friend invited me. I figured out this is getting me nowhere and that I'm wasting my time. I uninstalled and installed LoL at least ~5 times. A few months ago I formatted my winblows drive. Now I had more time but you have to fill it somehow right. And so I installed GPU drivers and steam, then TF2 because I knew it and it runs natively on GNU/Linux. Played that a lot for a ~2 months but then uninstalled it along with steam not long ago. Now I still have free time at my hands, less now because of job but I still have weekends and I don't always work all workday. Now I'm trying nofap (I know I know, but I need it, trust me. failed after 2 days tho) and just browsing forums/4chins/reddit/youtube. Maybe I have depression from not being occupied or I'm just mentally ill, idk.
So my point is you have to be determined and actually _fill the time_ with something productive. Because changing games to browsing 4chins or whatever won't help, ever.
There is a lot of resources out there, google it. You could also try r/getdisciplined (lots of info; but don't get into habit of just reading it and not applying it) or /adv/ for some tips.
Best of luck to you user.

A few days ago I was feeling similar. Instead of jumping right into linux, I went to the daily programmer thread, read the sticky, got some of their books. At someones suggestion I started with C. it's a lot of reading, but at least i'm doing something now. i don't plan to make it a career or anything, that's looking way too far ahead,, but i'm liking it and it might give me enough courage to try out linux or other languages
so go do that, go learn something and use the internet as a resource. if something isn't clicking, there will be another dozen websites with a (probably) different approach or example. keep doing it until what they're saying clicks

you are not thinking straight, god is a name for something that has specific qualities we already know have to be somewhere because of our observations of physical phenomena

It's weird that you really want to believe in something with absolutely zero proof and will never affect you at all whatsoever is this a hold over from high school, where teachers encourage you to read way too much into things and make connections that aren't there and try to make things fit the idea you have, rather than reaching an idea with what you have?
Isaiah Miller
>absolutely zero proof did you ever stop to think what relationship there is between architecture and temples
>never affect you at all whatsoever but it does, understanding and observing the reality you live in is what allows you to better interact with it
>is this a hold over from high school, >pathologizing ideas

I've watched quite a few videos and read up about it, I can every now and again get a little roll, especially so with certain letters before the rolled r. But I can't just roll it at my own will which is kind of what I'm aiming for, I'll keep practicing though I don't think I'd be able to install gentoo, that shit looks fucked I'm not autistically into games though, I don't sit by myself and play single player games all day. It's more of a social thing for me I guess, playing multiplayer games with some friends, but yeah that might happen It does have integrated gfx I believe, but would this mean I would need an HDMI cable to plug into my monitor from the integrated GPU along with my actual video card? I've been waiting for Zen to release to upgrade my PC, but the plan was to get a new SSD and just use my current one as a second one to fuck around with distros It does seem like more of a lazy mindset problem more than anything. If something is working okay you really have no motivation to rip it all up and change it just because you think it might be better for you. Good luck to you too though, little determination should help us both I've got my hands on a bunch of different ebooks I want to read (most relating to python, statistics, machine learning, etc), but I'm using 'not having an ereader' as an excuse to not read them. I'll man up and start reading one on a normal screen today Deleting facebook would be pretty hard, just because I'd not really have any other good way of seeing what everyone else is doing around my area. But then again, that's pretty useless information anyway.
I'm just part of a couple group chats through facebook messenger that I talk to friends with pretty much daily. Deleting facebook means not being a part of those.
As for deleting games that's probably happening very soon, and so is installing Linux on a seperate partition or drive
Luis Rivera
>Deleting facebook means not being a part of those.
