HARDWARE VS SOFTWARE

Why is it so hard for people to understand that Android performs worse than iOS or Native Linux on weaker hardware just like the Playstation and Xbox OSes perform worse than Nintendo's OS on weaker hardware?

People are dumb

Why does it matter? It's trivial to buy a cheap Android phone that is actually good if you know what you're looking for, rendering iPhones and high-density Android phones literally pointless. If people can't or won't acknowledge this that's their problem.

There aren't any intensive phone apps that require good hardware.

People like wasting money

There are some games that go pretty hard on my phone. Ex. Real Racing 3

Who the hell uses their phones for games.

gameplay vs graphics, this is really what it comes down to.

Personally, I fucking despise good graphics because everytime I look at them, I just think 'yea, a team of 200-500 people made this, and if it wasn't for that bloat in the budget maybe this would be cheaper, maybe instead of focusing on making it pretty they would have focused on mechanics instead of trying to be a fucking movie.

Honestly, when it comes to ai in games, fear is still some of the best I think we have ever had and it required a 1.7 ghz pentium 4. fairly sure arm is beyond that performance level now. fear is also a VERY good minimum graphics example, at least for shooters, and its recommended spec was 6600 geforce or more.

Honestly can't wait for the new nintendo to come out, a potentially emulate able consoles during the consoles life cycle, and a dedicated gaming console on arm, will be interesting to see how much arm is pushed.

Sounds like some pretty severe autism you have there.

what part?
The one where we all know for a fact that the art department for any game bloats heavily and is 70%+ of a games budget, and if that was cut or drastically reduced games could be sold at a cheaper price, or may go to a cheaper price sooner.

The part where ai has yet to surpass the need of a 1.7ghz pentium 4

or was it the part where I said fear was more than good enough graphically

Id rather a game be engaging then pretty, and if they don't sell a game based on 'next gen grafix' they would be forced to look at gameplay instead.

youre not the only customers though. most people consider good graphics a must for new releases of almost any category. so its entirely the greedy decisions of publishers but rather popular demand.

I do. Emulators, other casual shit

no, they don't.

You can argue that the current console cycle and mentality of 'push the graphics and be damned how bad it plays' makes a few people demand 'it has to look better then the last game or its worthless.

on the other hand we have stardew valley which on steam alone sold 1.7 million copies, with the lowest the game ever sold for being 10$ that means a range from 17 million dollars to just shy of 26 million dollars.

minecraft, another game that looks like objective shit, sold over 100 million copies.

meanwhile, tomb raider, that sold 8.5 million as of april 6th 2015, saw the game at this point making anywhere from 42.5 million up to 510 million dollars, and was consider a failure.

The numbers are on my side that say to hell with graphics, I care about gameplay.

>Playstation and Xbox OSes perform worse than Nintendo's OS on weaker hardware

What are you talking about? Nintendo just creates shitty, barebones OSes.

> just like the Playstation and Xbox OSes perform worse than Nintendo's OS on weaker hardware?
> iOS

Has someone actually ported these to weaker hardware? If so for what purpose?

I agree, there is a reason why the early 2000s for PC and the sixth console generation for consoles are considered the epitome of gaming. It was a time when games looked good while not being prohibitively expensive to create. With the seventh console generation game development more than tripled.

>most people consider good graphics a must for new releases

*cough* minecraft *cough*

People only think graphics are important because advertisers tell them it is.

Its the "much mechanics" meme.
I do agree games should be built around mechanics but the graphics are important
I feel if you increase graphics you should also be purposeful.
Think street fighter five adding whiff and hit animations or more realistic running animations and how they can contribute to the immersion.

What are you emulating? Fucking xbox one?

ARM GPU drivers on native Linux are virtually non existent.

PSP

Graphics aren't important.

Aesthetics are.
You can have amazing aesthetics without high graphics. Of course, that doesn't change the fact that you can have amazing aesthetics with high graphics too.

What matters is how the looks work with the game, and a game shouldn't have to be carried by "amazing graphics" that costs a bunch.

Let It Die is a decently high graphic game that just released, but it's on the minimum of actual graphical quality and animation. The aesthetics of the game works though, and its mechanics are really good.

kind of true kind of not.

Imagine if we just stunted graphics at... lets say original far cry level, you could view the world for miles around and the only limiting factor would be how well the cpu could handle all the ai.

or better, look at doom. because of the limited detail, it allows for so much extra stuff, see brutal doom as an example of pushing more mechanics though limiting the power necessary to play the games.

not all pixel art is equal, your point is easier to see in pixel art then it is 3d, but games like trine/kirby yarn/kirby clay are all games that do aesthetics amazingly well.

for an extreme low fi, devil daggers also does this.

Just buy stronger hardware

>they would have focused on mechanics instead of trying to be a fucking movie.
got a good laugh.

I think looking good graphics wise, in a game from a top 10 company, is a requirement now and its something I expect..
With that being said though, the shitty mechanics and the games being released in a half finished and completely unplayable state, is the reason I do not play video games anymore and refuse to buy new ones.

>play gta v, glitches out, thrown my jets out of the air into the ground, cops can see though all objects and walls including mountains, inventory just disappears
>play minecraft, dedicate literally weeks of survival game play transforming whole bioms, level fucking mountains, fill a whole field full of 10 high double chests of all valuable materials
>update corrupts game save, game crashes in 2 minutes of being loaded
>its a known fact theres been a glitch in the sims for the last several games that will cause you to loose your game saves, the developers are not allowed to fix it.
