Alright Sup Forums I have around $1500 to spend on a graphics card/monitor(s) what should I get?
I already have decent everything else, a i7 3770k, 16gb ram, etc etc. My graphics card is pretty old, a gtx 660, and can barely run/can't even run almost all newer games. I also use a 1920x1080p monitor, just regular old monitor, 60Hz.
With $1500 can I get a good graphics card + two 4k monitors? Or two of those ultrawide 1440 ones? Does higher than 60Hz make a big difference? Should I stick with 1080p monitors and just get a really good graphics card like a Titan X Pascal?
I really want to try and get 2 monitors if at all possible. I'm mainly interested in playing Star Citizen (Star Marine, 2.6 patch I get single digit FPS), Wildlands, DOOM, BF1, etc.
You also need new RAM when upgrading your CPU (which is why I added it) Personally, I'd go this route, however, you do have a lot of other options.
The choice of monitor is solely personal preference, I have one and it's great. If you wanted 144hz you totally could though, just go for a TN panel monitor instead of IPS.
Also, you could save a bit on the graphics card if wanted, a 1070 would serve your needs just fine and is much cheaper allowing you to spend more on a nicer monitor. If you went to 1070, I'd still stick with Gigabyte due to their ever so slightly better cooling.

And before the local retards known as the Sup Forums userbase start with the "omg it's incompatible" remember that OP has a cooler to cool his current CPU.
Jack Johnson
OP here, I have a Noctua cooler, the DH-14.
Is the 6700k that much better than a 3770k? How come I need new ram? I use CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB DDR3 1600.
Joshua Lewis
I read that the 1080 Ti and AMD RX 490 were going to be coming out soon, should I wait?
Juan Russell
Intel's last few CPU generations dropped support for DDR3, you need DDR4 now.
The 6700k isn't anything crazy, but you'll definitely see an increase of ~30% in performance. Plus, the 6700k has much more support for new softwares and etc as it is a newer CPU.
1080 Ti and RX 490 are slated for release in January, you can wait if you want. The RX 490 will probably end up performing around the same as the 1080, and I wouldn't expect it to be more than ~$50 cheaper.
The 1080 Ti will of course perform better, but the price will be higher. I'd estimate a price of $750, but I could be wrong. Whether or not you wait is up to you, but if you want to go 1440p or even 4k, a 1070/1080 will serve you fine, and a 1080 Ti would just be overkill.
Julian Perez
Oh also, I looked at the DH-14 and I didn't see 1151 under supported sockets, and though it may work, I'm not sure and there's a chance it won't. I'm glad you told me what cooler you had.
There are plenty of good inexpensive coolers, pretty much anything will serve you well, just to give you an example, have a link:
I kind of regret getting the cooler, the thing is massive. It covered up some of the ram slots on my motherboard and pushed my graphics card to the second slot. I've never overclocked the processor so I think it was a waste of money imo.
Parker King
If you're not overclocking, don't get a k.
If you have no plans to overclock just get a 6700.
Colton Watson
>>With a fucking 3770k
Don't listen to this idiot. 3770k is still fine
Get a 1080 and a 2560x1440 or ultrawide 21:9
Jackson Clark
Now I'm confused. So I don't need a new cpu/mobo/ram?
Juan Miller
That LG 34UM95C vertical looks really good. But the monitors are $650 a pop, which would nearly cap me out for upgrades.
Mason Barnes
No. A 3770k isn't going to bottleneck a 1080. You don't need to replace it, there are still people with 2500k that are doing just fine.
Spending money on meme bendlake is a giant waste of money. DDR4 offers 0 performance over ddr3 and you're far better off getting 2 really good monitors and a 1080.
Personally i'd get a 3440x1440 +a 2560x1440 and the 1080. Hertz can matter but it is a preference.
Leo Morgan
You do, the poorfags on Sup Forums are all "muh 2500k" because they can't accept the fact they're just poor.
>It's like you want to be lied to >No actual game benchmarks just stats
Benjamin Lopez
>muh bottleneck kill yourself
Noah Roberts
OP here, so is the 3770k fine? Or should I replace it all?
Bentley Lee
How come a 3440x1440 and a 2560x1440? Why not two of the same?
Evan Ramirez
Before this thread is deleted can you show me in a detailed format your specs, and then I am sure we can help you of what that does gets to go into the trash.
Adam Powell
This. Why not just buy another ultrawide and put it on top of it if OP has that much money.
Jordan Collins
i7 3770k on a z77 motherboard 16gb ram ddr 3 1600 windows 10 64bit home 1080p monitor gtx 660 graphics card ssd, and a few hd's
Colton Rivera
It's OP btw. I want to be able to play the latest and greatest AAA games at 4k on ideally a ultrawide monitor and have another monitor hooked up for stuff like teamspeak/discord, internet browsing while gaming.
David Morgan
Getting those two 3440x1440 monitors would be amazing but that's $1300 of the $1500 I have to spend. Are there alternative monitors with same spec?
Alexander Powell
Because honestly you just don't have enough and sometimes games don't have native support for the 21:9 resolution
It's mostly money though, you can get a 2560x1080 to go on top if you want to keep the same scale but it won't look as good.
Eli Bailey
A new MOBA Probably a Z170 build with at least: CPU: 6500 GPU: NVidia 1070 RAM: 2100 Mhz (buy Corsair or some shit) SSD: Samsung 850 250 GB HHD: TB 2 TB and then you should be pretty much set.
Joseph Thompson
I meant 2133 Mhz
Matthew Gray
Op here, already have harddrives and a 240gb ssd. How come a 6500 instead of a 6700 and a 1070 instead of a 1080? The ram I get if the current lineup doesn't support older memory.
Grayson Bell
OP you do not need to upgrade your cpu.
Get a gtx 1080 and whatever monitor combination of monitors you want. A 4k, or ultrawide whatever. You're cpu is fine.
Oliver Johnson
For your needs you don't need those kind of specs. Because the way it comes out to me is that you are only using it for games and browsing the internet. 6700 is a meme, and the same counts for 1080. You seriously won't need anything else.
Jayden Torres
Yes he does user. He wants to run 4k at constant 60 FPS, then he does. The GPU does most of the work, but his CPU also plays a big part to his gaming experience.
Connor Cooper
Is the performance that big of a bump from 3770k to 6500k/6700k? And 1070 to 1080? Would using two 3440x1440 ultrawide monitors consume more graphic power? Also what about the new cards coming out in January?
Justin Wilson
Kaby Lake only has a 1% improvement over 6700k so don't even consider it. If you want to wait for anything then just wait for Ryzen. It is way overkill for you OP, but if you want to wait for anything then go for that CPU. For the performance over the two. There is about a 10 % difference. I would still go for it, but if you don't want to upgrade your CPU, then that's fine too.
John Price
only autistic idiots think this is true
>Is the performance that big of a bump from 3770k to 6500k/6700k?
i linked you a benchmark comparing the two earlier, there is literally half a frame difference in pretty much every game listed.
1080 would make a bigger difference, you could wait for the 1080ti
Tyler Nelson
Are you serious right now? The CPU have always mattered to the gaming experience. Having a GPU with unlimited teraflops isn't going to help him if he has an outdated CPU.
Joshua Jones
So how come people are saying don't get a Titan X Pascal if I'm just going to get a graphics card and a 4k monitor?
Easton Edwards
intel cpus haven't bottlenecked for awhile even at 4k
>So how come people are saying don't get a Titan X Pascal if I'm just going to get a graphics card and a 4k monitor?
Because this is Sup Forums and it's a meme
Nathan Fisher
user please just go to PCPartpicker and build yourself a new build and show us what you have come up with.
Levi Roberts
It's a meme to troll*
Zachary Myers
OP here, if I weren't going to upgrade cpu/mobo/ram etc I'd go for something like this: pcpartpicker.com/list/v6RvsJ
Is there a big difference between 2560x1440 and 3440x1440?
