Are modern alienwares any good?

Looking for something powerful I can take out with me and the 15 inch alienware seems like a decent balance between power and portability.

No.

if you even consider buying an alienware pc you don't belong on this board

get your consumerist arse off of my board.
normieeees reeeee.

>much more powerful than a macbook or Dell xps
>cheaper too
What's wrong with Alienware?

afaik you can build a pc with alienware parts for a lot cheaper than actually buying a pre-built alienware pc

>pc
How could you mix pc and laptop user.
Shame on you!

oh i didn't realize this was about laptops
my bad user

Read the sticky, go to the wiki, don't bother us

No.

>gaming
>laptop
Get out.

>much more powerful than a macbook or Dell xps
and much heavier, with much shittier battery life, and much worse design / aesthetics. If you're really planning on gaming on a laptop beyond casual use, you're a retard.

Follow your dreams and wishes, dear user. Fuck these poor ass jelly plebs.

I had an Alienware 13 (i5 4200 / 16GB / GTX860M / 250GB SSD) for a bit. Wasn't a bad machine at all. Felt good to work with, but enough power to bring up a couple VM's when needed, and let me play the occasional game when on the road.

The graphics amplifier is an interesting thing, if you want a more powerful GPU when home.

>much heavier
Haha look at this weak faggot.
>shittier battery life
Better than a macbook

>worse design
Much better cooling than an xps or macbook, much better build quality, keyboard has much better travel depth for typing, touchpad is smooth and accurate.

I have no idea what you're trying to say user.

>Even thinking about buying an Alienware
Go be a consumer whore somewhere else

>Haha look at this weak faggot.
Fuck off, you know why. Tools that are to heavy are annoying as fuck and not portable, which is missing the whole point

>Better than a macbook
Source? Otherwise fuck off

>I have no idea what you're trying to say user.
Xps doesn't have insane horsepower so it doesn't need insanely cooled

Sorry I only came here to look at the girl

same

Yes the R3 are good get the 16

I mean the 15

Modern Alienware feature full size and power graphics like 1070 and 3ghz Intel quad core. You can even get a 470 inside to save cash. They have a new radiator that sticks out the back enabling far more performance and yet still looking understated and classy in overall design

>girl
rofl, she is no girl. she is a pornstar and at minimum a hooker

>look at this weak faggot.
Look at this retard gaymer

Gaming laptops are bad at gaming and bad at being laptops.

sauce

la salsa por favor

Bring on that h8, children.

The Alienware Alpha is probably the best all-in-one HTPC on the market and the Alienware 14 is almost my perfect laptop. But beside that there are equal or better options.

Its fine they have the best cooling capability due to their size

>has squid wallpaper
>calls others children

I used to own one for the longest time as I got it for free since the previous owner took it to like 5 different guys who couldnt get it to work. One MOBO reset later and it was good to go.

The LED system was pretty dope as it was full RGB before that was relatively common, plus had internal lights that would kick on when the side panel was popped so you could see what you were fucking with even when it wasnt plugged in.

Honestly though outside of the case they are the exact same as some of the other Dell systems but cheaper. I saved $700 on my laptop in 2011 by simply using my brain and going with the XPS over the Alienware. I dont even think the newer cases look cool enough to warrant the price difference but to each their own.

Anyone going to tell us who this is yet?

>3.4kg
>portability
choose one

Would that feel good? Does it feel nice to have a water jet shooting into your big tits?

>media player
That's the only thing that really bugs me here.

"Gaming" laptops aside, what if I need something portable with a GPU?
What other options are there?

Clevo

That's actually not always the case right now with dell. I sort of obviously check them, and often times the XPS Line will be more expensive for either worse or equal specs, and occasionally the Alienware is more expensive but has dramatically better specs. The only reason I own memeware though is because dell offers 0% APR for 3 / 9 / 12 months or whatever based on how expensive your machine is, and that's great for me.

If you mean VLC, honestly I need to unpin that. I still need to use it sometimes, but I've been using some sort of mpv + more user friendly gui combo that's been much better for me.

*mean to write "obsessively check them"

Feels good to my dick.

Good lawd, if that mmakes you horny after being here for a while, you must be a newfag, sir.

Have you tried not being a pathetic weakling?

DIY like a desktop
yes, it is just as easy

wait, you don't buy your computers outright? You're leasing a fucking alienware gayman laptop?

why do you need to do 3D rendering/video gaming on the go? The iGPU on the new intel should be more than enough for any laptop task.

Convenience.

We're not all poorfags who have to think about value with every single purchase.
Only most purchases.

You're pathetic

some sager/clevo laptops even have gtx 1080 sli and desktop i7 6700k processors

they cost a fortune but they're pretty good

hey i have a pic for you.

>VLC
>Skype
>Media Player
>Wallpaper doesn't fit the screen

There is literally nothing wrong with VLC and Skype.

They're fairly decent computers. My friend has the 13" alienware laptop (from 2015) and it's a solid computer with decent performance. If you do get one I'd recommend the OLED sceens Dell is shipping some models with now, but just be prepared to pay a pretty decent amount of money regardless of what your choice is.

A lease? No. Instead of paying say 1000$ for the product, I have to pay 1000$ for it within 12 months before they start charging interest like you paid for it with a credit card.

I generally pay off my purchases well before the time limit runs out, about 5-6 months after getting it.

>VLC
I've already addressed that.
>Skype
I fucking hate Skype. The only reason I use it is because I hate Facebook even more and I can't make my parents and friends all switch to something else
>Media Player
Yeah, I opened up a mp3 I downloaded from the internet. It played it. I closed it. Horrifying.
>Wallpaper doesn't fit screen

You mean it doesn't *fill* the screen. The wallpaper literally fits in the screen. 21:9 wallpapers are not that common and black bars never bother me.

>pinning programs to taskbar
>skype
>vlc
>retarded fan icon probably some proprietary gamer shit by alienware
>desktop background not the right resolution

worse than my moms desktop

>wallpaper doesn't fit
>watermark visible even though filling it out would take less than 5 seconds
>windows media player

>Pinning programs frequently used to the taskbar ensures that they always remain in the exact same place.

>Default program currently for mp3s, downloaded a podcast, it played the podcast, literally nothing wrong with that.

windows does not have a native way to add hotkeys.
Pinning something to the taskbar allows you to use super+number, just like on unity.

gaymen

Yeah yeah I know,
>gaming laptop
>laughingwhores.jpg

But if Sup Forums had to choose one poison from one of the established "gaymer" brands, which would it be and why?

Contenders:
>Alienware by Dell
>Razer Blades
>MSI
>Predator by Asus

Is there a lesser evil?

>>Contenders:
>>Alienware by Dell
>>Razer Blades
>>MSI
>>Predator by Asus
Whoops, mixed that up.

>predator by Acer
>republic of gaymers by Asus

Idk man.
I'd say alienware, but only because it's the only one of the lot I've tried. Still lugging my m18x around with me

Memeware with Squid Background guy here. If the whole point of getting a gaming laptop is so that you can play games on the go, or god forbid in a more public area, avoid Alienware.

Even the newer models can't change the fact that the bulk combined with the alien head thing make you look like such a tool. I bought this laptop because I travel a lot and I prefer being able to take my main machine with me wherever I go. I'm however moving it from one room to another. From home to a hotel, or from a hotel to a relatives, so the weight and gaudy look matter little.

Maybe you don't care about what people think of your laptop, but I do. Especially as far as normies are cocerned, the best laptop would be the Razer Blade (not Stealth, Not Pro), just find something to cover up the awful logo. The Blade looks just like a black macbook pro with a RGB keyboard.

I say the Blade, and not the Blade Stealth or Blade Pro because:

Blade Stealth:
Requires eGPU to actually game (Sort of ruins the point of getting a "Gaming")
Shitty battery life for an iGPU 12 inch laptop

Blade Pro:
Hahhahah oh wow.
No really, super fucking overpriced, from what I've heard shitty keyboard, and jesus fuck that thing is too big.

Thanks for the replies.

The blade really does look like the most normal of the lot, doesn't it?

Only thing is, I've just read of so much bad shit (QC wise) concerning razer's products that I'm somewhat reluctant concerning them.

TBF, I've heard the same of the newest Alienware models, too.

Have heard nothing at all concerning the MSI, Acer and ASUS offerings. Nothing at all.

It's always Razer vs Alienware.
I guess that says all it needs to concerning the other brands.

>old pc i built shits itself
>circumstances land me in the US for a couple of months
>end up buying an ayy lmao laaptop since for the specs its the same cost as building a desktop back home
Hopefully it doesnt shit tself and die in like 6 months

External GPU

Which one did you buy?

I remember in one of these threads some user (namefag?) was using some distro on his alienware but had to replace the wireless card to some intel model for compatibility.

Is that user here now? Which model did you own?

17 R4, besbuy had a few hundred off it early december

If you look at my screenshot, you'll see that red stop sign looking icon with a T. That's a program called ThrottleStop, normally used to prevent a CPU from throttling because of built in heat limits, but in my case, I use it to stop the built in overclocking CPUs seem to do nowadays.

The Alienware 17 R3 (Which I own, I can't confirm this for the new ones but this is a relatively frequent issue with gaymer laptops) gets too hot when playing some games (Mainly Overwatch), and when it hits a certain hit threshold it forces the cpu to downclock to 750Mhz.

Overwatch can run SMOOTH AS BUTTER on just 1ghz, but 0.75mhz is where the game hits some intense frame drops and sound stuttering and a bunch of other issues. I use ThrottleStop to manually set my clock rate to no more than 2.6ghz playing Overwatch so that the heat from the cpu + the heat from the gpu results in piss poor performance.

I use the other program, the one that's like a fan, to control the fans because even when down clocking to 2.6ghz (or really, just disabling turbo as that's the base clock) the fans don't turn up to 100% until it's too late.

By manually setting the fans to 100% when I'm doing cpu intensive tasks, and controlling the speed of the CPU, I avoid most of the throttling issues. Now, I want to go ahead and reply to what you (or more likely some other ass in this thread would say)

"Wait, what's the point of having the CPU go up to 3.4ghz if you have to manually set it to 2.6ghz just to stop it from heating to the point it throttles to 0.75ghz?"

That's a good fuckin' question.

I don't have the overheating issue when the GPU isn't being used, so the 3.4ghz QC is still useful when encoding video or any task similar to that. When the GPU is involved though, sticking these QC shits into laptops seems sort of pointless if you have to manually keep a watch not just on the fans but the speed of the CPU.

It's fine for me, and I don't regret my purchase, but I also don't use my laptop as a laptop 95% of the time.

M18xr1 fag here.

I don't suffer any overheating and my laptop runs great. Might upgrade the gpu soon though

I'll be putting down a deposit on this machine. Who's excited for me?

>alienware
>paying 300% extra for hardware

It's the biggest fucking scam for a shitty PC tower case to ever exist. They were charging well over 8k for a setup with triple SLI 980ti. Fucking absurd.

I can only imagine what their triple SLI 1080 price will be. Fuckers seem to charge an extra $3k for the "labor" of stuffing all the guts into their retarded cases.

They switched motherboard manufacturer from MSI to Pegatron recently and also seems more cheaply built(phases count/quality,heatsinking etc). Would not recommend the newer ones.

Here's an example, but on the lower end. Last time I did this, the % difference between what you would pay to build it yourself vs buying it when you keep adding shit on skyrockets.

Memeware is pretty okay if you're going more basic, but I'd never use them for something you plan on paying more than 1.5K for.
