Cleaning up years of old downloads that are taking up hard drive space

>Cleaning up years of old downloads that are taking up hard drive space
>Check everything thoroughly in fear of deleting something urgent
>Constantly get distracted by my history, looking up subjects related to the files and see all the memories come back
>Get an existential crisis from realizing what I have been doing with my life
>Never actually finish cleaning up, repeat indefinitely

What are some good strategies to prevent shit like this?

Just delete all of it.
If you haven't needed to use it in the last couple of months, you probably don't need it.

Not true, I just found something very useful that I have put aside.

Still trying to complete your pron collection, eh?

do it in chunks faggot

Try having a folder of reaction images. Thousands upon thousands of reaction images with their Sup Forums given filenames. I started using Hydrus to try and tag them and it's just - fuck man, that's a lot of images.

I cleaned up my downloads folder recently. Ended up with pic related.
I hate deleting things fearing that I might need them again. Total size of this folder is 180GB.

I still have several hundred gb of old backups that I need to comb through and organize.

Try and get people to vote for neural net tagging on the next poll. It should open soon.
If this works once it's finally implemented, you'll have a smart bot doing all the work for you.

is that you, soros?

Save everything that's unique like camera photos and your important documents. Purge everything else. It's good for you.

a porn collection is never really complete

Wow all this time I didn't notice that it says greece instead of turkey.
It's just random clips I saved when the entire thing was going down.

lel nigga thought he was in tianan meng

I do a fresh install of new distro every semester. I don't think I've ever used more then 40GB of storage.

Are you me?

Me three

This, I used to play on stadium tech servers for hours back a day.

This shit is not hard. Create folders for music videos pictures torrents and software in your home directory. When you download something, extract it, move the contents to the apropriate folder, then delete the archive. Your downloads folder will stay clean, and your life will be better.

I'll agree that this part is (kinda) easy.

But what about everything that has been downloaded before?

rm -rvf *
Nothing "important" is going to be living in your downloads folder.

Buy more hard drives.

Delete everything as you go and everything you don't use more than once a week, because you don't truly need it.

I've never filled more than 200gb of a HD. At 86gb/1tb right now and have been for 2 years and practice similar housekeeping for my entire system + Keep everything updated, cleaned and optimized, sometimes by hand.

My GPU/CPU/Overall benches usually come in the top percentile of the same hardware and configurations. Well worth it.

Just delete it, user. Let it go. We aren't what we horde, we are just what we are when we have nothing external to us.

Good organizational structure from the start will prevent cleanup from ever taking more than five minutes. Neatly label and organize folders and their contents in a sensible hierarchy. Don't multitask to much. Finish a task before starting a new one or you're bound to have millions of files that you have no idea where they came from or what you were going to do with them, and it will only get worse. Delete files you are done with as soon as you are done with them.

I just sort my downloads folder by size and delete the biggest files I dont want anymore
I still have download folders going back decades
