they are more convenient to consume media like books or youtube videos

So u can jerk it in bed

Media consumption device. They're good at what they're supposed to do.

why don't you only read books on a desktop
? people love books because they're a format that's comfortable and easy to use while relaxing

What's the point of a laptop? Wouldn't a desktop be more proficient at everything?
What's the point of a smartphone outside of making calls? Wouldn't a laptop be more proficient at everything?

More portable, form factor can be beneficial, etc.

Shit argument, laptop is useful when

>flying on plane
>need to be mobile
>power goes out
Etc etc

Keep trying faggot

Sup Forums is the wrong place to ask about tablets as it's frequented by Asperger's Syndrome sufferers who enjoy tinkering obsessively with computers.

Tablets don't really provide an opportunity for tinkering, as they provide slick, secure and reliable access to useful software applications (or "apps") without any complications, so naturally Sup Forums can't see the point of them.

Furthermore, Sup Forums posters tend to have oversized phones, which makes possession of a tablet even more pointless in their eyes. The concept of a book-sized device that you can use on train, bus or airplane without having to squint at has no merit to them since they very rarely travel anywhere.

If pushed, Sup Forums users may grudgingly recommend Windows tablets, as they have a "real" operating system. The fact that Windows is designed for computers with keyboards and mice, and is a terrible touch OS with barely any touch-optimised software, means that these "tablets" are really laptops without keyboards, running software designed for desktops.

Finally, you will hear mention of the Nexus 7 2013. A three year old device with poor build quality and no SD card slot. This is because a few Sup Forums residents dabbled with the device when it was new and exciting, and have refused to move on with the times.

So you can read PDFs without going blind.

The point of a tablet is it's a large portable screen capable of doing light computing tasks for which the weight, keyboard and power consumption of a laptop are unnecessary

The fact the iPad created a huge market for these devices proves their utility

Lighter, one handed use, and doesnt need to be on a flat surface, so i can wedge it in my fat folds and use me other hand to balance it. I find laptops better for jacking it, since i use one hand to open 9000 tabs and the other to jack it

laptops are too heavy for women

Well shit, OP. I got a Galaxy Tab S2 for christmas and I don't know what the fuck to do with it. I admit this thing is pretty fucking decent (it's fast and the thing doesn't seem to have much bloatware) but honestly I really don't know what to do with this thing. I suppose reading shit is ok, but aren't there cheaper devices than this for that purpose...?

I would probably trade this for a chinkpad, but that's hella disrespectful. This was still a really expensive gift for someone like me.

I use a laptop so I can teach people how to do shit related to office/virtualization/design software. Call me when Android becomes an OS that can do that. Tinkering is not the only thing you do with a computer.

They're pretty useless. So far, my tablet has had the following 3 uses:

>Giving a power-point like presentation to one of my professors on a research topic when a tablet was more convenient than a laptop/projector.
>Reading PDFs/eBooks on a light portable device with a big enough screen so it doesn't strain your eyes.
>Watching HD porn and using the bigger screen / higher resolution to get the most out of it. This is how I use my tablet 99% of the time.

I really see these as more of a super luxury purchase than a necessity. I got mine for free and would never actually buy one.

The concept of a tablet is just retarded. For home use, a PC/laptop gives far more functionality. For being on the go, a smartphone can do everything a tablet can and can also fit into your pocket making it far more convenient. If you're going to be one of those retards carrying a tablet around with them in a backpack / bag, you may as well just buy a 13" light laptop and carry that around instead.

No, tinkering isn't the only thing you can do with a computer, but I think you'll agree there are a LOT of posters on Sup Forums whose time spent on their computers is mostly used for tinkering with some broken, fan-made distribution of Linux.

Tablets are handheld web browsers. You don't need keyboards to shitpost on Sup Forums or check your emails. The screen size is appropriate for the distance you hold them from your eyes, like a book. Sure, there is a ton of stuff you can't do with a tablet or can't do as easily as with a fully featured personal computer, but for a lot of casual web-based and media interactions, they are pretty useful.

Yeah, they're only good for bedtime reading and media. Which is why i only spent £100 on mine. People who spend like 500-800 quid on iPads and only use it to watch youtube, browse facebook and play those shitty mobile games on are insane.

And a tablet is better for all that shit

>>flying on plane
tablet is lighter and instant available, needs less space
>>need to be mobile
tablet is hypermobile
>>power goes out
tablets last longer than laptops

Indeed for basic stuff it is really useful, I'm not going to say otherwise. My sister barely uses her old laptop and now does everything with her tablet. That is browsing, posting on facebook, maybe watching a few videos and that's about it. But that's the thing, there's a hell of a lot of tasks you would rather do on a computer as well. Each one has its uses and honestly some people don't really find a tablet that useful.

For instance, here, I really don't see the reason why I would use it for anything else other than reading. I don't hang out too much, I can't do shit at work with it and really the only good thing for me specifically is that it has a pretty high resolution, so for reading it's pretty amazing I guess (I just waste my free time here instead).

How's a computer or laptop more proficient at reading mango in bed?

I take notes with mine. Pen input is the only good point I see in tablets, yet so few of them support it.

having a lot of money and using it how you like doesn't make you insane, libtard.

Reading and light couch surfing.

If you do a lot of reading it's worth it. I have the big iPad air with a good digipen I use for annotating articles and designs for work

Highlighting text is ass on mobile and so is light writing. A tablet can do basic tasks better than a laptop and phone with better/similar portability.

I use my phone exclusively as a hotspot to use my tablet when I'm mobile

Anime, manga, light pdf reading, web browsing. Storing music, pictures and miscellaneous documents you want to have with you. With something like pic related, they can serve as a laptop replacement for poorfags. If your laptop is an ultrabook/netbook, you probably don't need a tablet.

A phone with a big screen is more comfy for that.

I play tower defense games (aka the only good genre of videogames in existence) on my tablet.

they are great for browsing, watching videos, etc. on the couch or in bed.

My tablet is a web and VPN server.

Kodi

my old iPad Mini handles it quite well.
Planning on getting an HDMI adapter and plug it to my tv whenever my other poorfag friends want to watch a game or a fight

>he doesn't like throwing money away so he must be a librul!

Solid logic

When I'm cooking, I usually use a tablet for recipes. Android games display better on tablets, as do emulators. Porn in the bed is 1000X easier than a laptop.

I could also see them hurting someone pretty badly if thrown sideways like a frisbee so maybe they have a utility as a weapon? Haven't field tested this one but in theory...

I actually want a tablet for the stuff I use my phone for, where a bigger screen would be useful, and where I don't want my hands tied to it constantly.

On the other hand, many laptops can fold for this anyway.

>$300 laptop
1366x768 TNshit screen, slow Atom processor, comes with shitty OS, feels like cheap plastic

So are smartphones.

No they aren't unless you want to hold your phone 5 inches from your face.

I still use my iPad 4 I got back in 2012.

It makes a good bedside PC thanks to its incredible stand by time and it's compatibility with desktop sites and mobile apps.

So in other words I can leave my smartphone and laptop charging and have my iPad in bed to take up both of them.

>260$
>1440x900 screen (sadly it is TN because it's old but it's fine as long as it's only one person looking at it)
>1st gen i7
>installed linux
>superior ThinkPad quality

I don't see a problem with that.

>50 minutes of battery life

You missed.
It's 5+ hours. With the smaller battery it's around 2 hours.

>smaller battery
You mean the standard one?
>he has to have a giant tumor sticking out the bottom of his laptop to get battery life above 2 hours
Kek

They're cheap for normies who o my want new stuff and basically do everything a laptop does while being more portable.

I mean the one that is harder to find. But I guess the smaller one was the one originally shipped with the laptop. And I'm perfectly fine with the extended battery. It also serves as a handle.

I have the tab s(1), its pretty comfy desu senpai

>laptop is so big and bulky that you need a fucking handle to carry it around

All the arguments about how tablets are better for things like books and movies are even better on a laptop since it has a bigger screen, and with tablets you have to make the choice between a high res screen like the iPad but with a shitty aspect ratio for movies or a 16:9 tablet with a shitty 720p resolution.

And if you read a lot of books then you're an idiot for not getting a Kindle since you can get one for cheaper than even the shittiest Android tablet and it will be a hundred times better for reading books than a tablet.

There really is no reason at all to buy a tablet nowadays when 2 in 1 laptops are getting more and more popular, unless you absolutely need to sacrifice performance, an OS that you can actually do things on and being able to actually use your device for productivity since it has a trackpad and keyboard for a device that's just slightly smaller and easier to carry around.

>books and movies are even better on laptop because bigger screen

False; you can't hold a laptop like a book. Tablets are free of the encumbrance of a keyboard, power supply, etc and are easier to carry and position for media consumption

>You have to make the choice between high red screen and shitty aspect ratio, or shitty 720p

What? No you don't

>Kindle a hundred times better for reading books

But tablets do other stuff

>something about 2-in-1 laptops

Which come with the power, cost and usability overhead of a mangled desktop OS (assuming Windows... A safe assumption)

>an OS you can actually do things on

You can do a shitload of things on mobile OSs

>False; you can't hold a laptop like a book. Tablets are free of the encumbrance of a keyboard, power supply, etc and are easier to carry and position for media consumption

Please look up what a 2 in 1 laptop is

>Easier to carry

Barely

>Easier to position

Not really

>What? No you don't

Then please show me a widescreen QHD+ tablet that isn't the Google Pixel C

>But tablets do other stuff

And? They're shittier than a Kindle for reading books on and shittier than a laptop for watching movies on. What does a tablet do that I can't do on my laptop and a program like Vysor that lets me mirror my Android phone on my laptop if I absolutely have to run Android on a large screen?

>Which come with the power, cost and usability overhead of a mangled desktop OS (assuming Windows... A safe assumption)

Yup, which is still a hundred times better than using a mobile OS for any serious computing.

>You can do a shitload of things on mobile OSs

Yup, and it's still a fraction of what you can do on a desktop OS.

I spend relatively little time actually in my office because I'm often traveling between on-site services at many different places.

So for several years I've used an Inspiron Mini 10 with Debian, because it's very light and small and does most of the things I'd need to do while out of the office.

Meanwhile I also had a shitty Asus tablet I used for reading comics and books, which is my biggest hobby. I rarely use it for anything else because the laptop and my smartphone cover basically everything else.

However on a whim a few months ago I picked up a Galaxy Tab A 9' on clearance for $70 to replace the Asus which had become barely functional, and then also on a whim got a small Bluetooth keyboard with a tablet stand built in. This has been one of the most useful things I've ever purchased as apparently Android has come a pretty long way since my first tablet in terms of apps that are well coded and work correctly. I also got a small Bluetooth mouse and now with one of those two-sided flash drives with micro-USB and TeamViewer to remote to all my office computers, I can do basically everything I could do on the Dell significantly faster with a better battery, no shitty AC adapter, a much nicer screen for the comics and books, and it synced with all my phone crap as well.

I always felt tablets were just for normies but this one has basically replaced my laptop for now. It seemed like tablets were the unnecessary link between phones and laptops but this makes me feel like maybe laptops are the unnecessary link between tablets and desktops, though if you need serious computing and can't rely on a remote connection to your desktop machine a nice laptop is going to be invaluable, which is why I still have one as well.

>apps that are well coded and work correctly
Well don't leave us hanging. Name some.

Well
Clover
is one.

LastPass works really well but, you know, botnet.

TeamViewer itself, Pepe DNS Changer, Orbot, Poweramp, Automate. I don't know if any of this is "Sup Forums approved".

Not really. I can do highlighting just fine on my phone, and writing is very similar to as on a tablet by using Swype.

The thing is, I can leave the house with no bag/backpack and just carry my phone in my pocket and do everything I can do on my tablet. To carry a tablet, I need to take some extra carrying apparatus with me since no reasonably sized jacket/pants pocket will hold a tablet.

Ultimately, I stand by my statement that tablets are only good for watching HD porn.

I like Poweramp but its playlists have some annoying quirks. Beats the hell out of the others I've tried though.

porn machine

I use mine for manga/doujins. Even large (5.7 inch) phones are too small for some manga. A 7-8 inch tablet is just right.
There is literally no better way to digitally read manga than on a 8 inch tablet in bed. Prove me wrong.

>look up a 2-in-1 laptop

You mean a laptop that you can turn into a tablet by taking off the keyboard? Do you see the irony? Also do you see my post above where I explained why a laptop with no keyboard is inferior to a dedicated tablet?

>easier to carry

A galaxy tab s2 is one third the weight of the lightest 2-in-1, but the weight isn't even the issue, it's that big superfluous key-covered flap getting in the way

>easier to position

You can hold a tablet at any desired distance from your face with one hand in a range of situations (crowded public transport, etc) in which even the smallest netbook would be impractical and ridiculous

>show me a wide-screen QHD+ tablet that isn't...

Yoga 2 Pro. First Google hit

>they're shittier than a kindle

But they do other stuff

>and shittier than a laptop for watching movies on

No, see above re positioning. Because I am a gentleman I will concede that laotops, when placed on a desk, are an acceptable method of watching movies, but unsuitable for many environments as previously mentioned

>what does a tablet do that my laptop can't

Provide a slick, portable, always-on, book sized screen for video and web browsing in a wide range of environments

>serious computing

Tablets aren't for "serious computing" and I never said they were.

>a fraction of what you can do on a desktop OS

I'm not disputing that, only your assertion that laptops are superior to tablets for ALL uses

The Shield K1 is the best balanced tablet. Prove me wrong. You literally can't

The power and volume buttons suck and it's a bit of a brick

Sent from my Shield K1

tablets are a meme.

tables are fucking useless, and total normie shit

has anyone seen the 4:3 tablets? didnt know they were making them at that scale until i went to officemax. i though it was nifty as fuck. tech was starting to become commie and boring as hell.

I don't get this. I rarely find myself in a situation where I want a >5 inch screen but don't need a keyboard, that just doesn't happen for me. Not sure how people using tablets can make do without a keyboard, software keyboards drive me nuts.

I know, I got rid of all mine from my house eventually. We eat off the floor like cavemen now

The real question is what was the point of thát tablet? The S1 is better in every way.

This

For a device that's literally made to be a pure media consumption thing, I don't get why they didn't stick with 16:9. This goes for tablets in general, but Samsung did it right with the s1. I usually hate on them, but 16:9 all the way. It's also nice a big, which is great for someone who reads sheet music off of it

>A phone with a big screen is more comfy for that
Nope. Windows tablets are much better shitposting devices

Except phones with big screens aren't comfy for anything else desu

no I haven't, that's kinda neat

other than the obvious that its a portable quick fix for simple things you would do on a laptop (shitposting, normie fag social media shit,pr0n..) i have mine mounted above my monitors and solely useit for media (kodi,sd card rammed full of music) hook it up to wireless speakers its a great addition..i usually watch world news on it whilst im hacking the gibson.

The only thing that 16:9 makes sense on is keyboardless phones.

Do I spend $200 on the K1 or a Korean hooker? Pls respond

Why, following the same logic, wouldn't that be the case, in fact maybe more so, for tablets?

Good tablet under $200?

No, because the logic behind 16:9 being good for phones is pocketability, not usage.

It is feasible for one to operate a tablet using only the penis, swiping right to left as it were.

Windows stickykeys feature becomes an annoyance on a faptop.

Shield K1

Well after you've been with a hooker you might feel a bit cheap and dirty afterward, and maybe regret it

But the Shield will make u feel quietly content for months, so....

i use my tablet for reading comics, manga, and books almost exclusively. basic web browsing here and there, but not much else. it's really really good for those purposes.

i have a dell venue 8 7000 and it's pretty great.

A big tablet is retarded, yes. They are unwieldy. When you lose the easy to wield aspect, you basically are left with a tablet without a proper keyboard.

Smaller tablets make sense. Smaller as in the 6-8" range. You can't conveniently carry around and use a laptop in all situations. This is where the little tablet comes in.

The small tablet market seems to be being overlooked and neglected imho. There's a point where current tablets are too big and phones too small. This is precisely where tablets belong.

Everything else it's laptop or desktop.

>The small tablet market seems to be being overlooked and neglected imho

i sort of agree. 8" or so is the sweet spot for portability, especially when so many phones are 5.5".

this is 16:10 8.4". the galaxy tab s2 is 8" 4:3, which is actually wider

displaywars.com/8-inch-4x3-vs-8,4-inch-16x10

4:3 is a really good ratio for 8" tablets. They get too long and floppy otherwise. but 16:10 isn't terrible for 6-7"

>But the Shield will make u feel quietly content for months
citation needed

I agree with this post. It's a handy dandy device... Just not for me. I have way too many things that do the same job as a tablet, but better.

I have:
>Desktop (Ivy Bridge i5)
It's basically a glorified home server at this point.

>Laptop (X200 Tablet 12.1")
I do almost everything with this device.

>Tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1")
It's a glorified alarm clock that lasts some 50 days on a single charge. Its only real use is saving my laptop's battery when I just want to watch video or play music on the go.
Or the rare PDF that reflows really poorly.
>E-reader (Kobo Aura H2O 6.8")
Reading e-books, PDFs that reflow well and manga.
>Phone (Motorola Droid 4, 4")
I use it mostly when I'm too lazy to reach for a bigger device. Or when accessing them is impractical.

how bad is your eyesight?

and are you really holding a tablet farther away than a phone? i hold both at relaxed arm's length...so maybe a foot from my face...if I. held a tablet further my arms would have to be fully extended

What do you do when the manufacturer no longer updates the version of Android?

Kids love tablets. That's all.

paper?

>digitally

I would use one to read pdf books.

>A phone with a big screen is more comfy for that.

They haven't made a phone with a 10" screen yet you twat

I have a Nexus 7 from 2012 and it's still great for reading books, watching youtube videos and casting them to my TV, and playing games (my phone also works but the screen is a great size for gaming)

also most games save your progress online so you can pick up your phone and play it on the go later

I also use it on the shitter to read muh news in the morning

I mean seriously I used to be one of those guys who thought a tablet wouldn't have any uses but ever since I got this thing I haven't looked back.

If it broke I would look for a suitable replacement but lo and behold, it is also a long-lasting well built device

Well, I have the Nexus from 2012 and you make do.

Honestly for what I use it I'm happy with the software version.

user I know you're autistic but you can live without the newest greatest version of android ok?

Also you can root it and install custom firmware so there's that

Mine has done this so far:

> make browsing youtube irritating without a keyboard
> irritate me by forcing me to swipe or poke the screen when I need to change a page
> irritate me when I can't hold two pages open with my fingers
> sit in a drawer until the battery loses its charge

I find them more irritating than useful.

Desktops are good for media production
Laptops are good for media production away from a central location
Tablets are good for media consumption
Smartphones are good for nothing

It's basically a larger phone without the pocketable aspect.
Nice for porn in bed, reading stuff, and playing games without having a keyboard sticking out or having heat exhaust blowing on the chest.

There's just so many good things about it user. It has GREAT speakers. It has a nice screen. It can stream games from Shield central or from your PC. It has a clean, regularly updated stock Android OS. It's free of bloat. The stylus support is pretty good.

Also it has a HDMI out socket. Does your Korean harlot have HDMI out? No. But she does have, herpes. So just think about that, user.

That's objectively wrong.

The one and only advantage of tablets is portability.

You cannot tell me that a laptop is more convenient for these tasks.
