Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Help me, /tpg/.

My X1 Carbon has outright died on me and I'm completely broke right now. My only two options are the T42 or X60/X61, all on Craigslist.

Which one should I choose and why?

Please help. I'm really in a pickle right now.

Lads I must choose between
>a T420 with lines in the screen
I can do the FHD/WQHD mod later
>a X61 in perfect status
I can buy a X62 later.
What do?

So I've got an x220 on the way with i5, 320gb hdd, 4gb ram, and a fresh install of win 7 professional. It's obviously used but in great shape. In your experienced Sup Forumsentoomen's hands what would your first steps in customizing it be? Thanks!

i think the t420 sounds like a better option because it's newer

The X61 has two advantages
>4:3 panel
>converted in a X62 can be resold for almost 2000 dollars

alright, i wasn't sure about the legitimacy of the x62 in the first place.

maybe go for the x61 then, if you're absolutely sure you can get the parts for the mod

Why no one has started a project to make new classic keyboards for newer thinkpads?
Is too difficult design a laptop keyboard controller?

Where can I buy this IBM-lookalike tactile sticker?

All laptops suck including Thinkpads
prove me otherwise.
Protip:
>You can't

What about the Dell Latitude's? I'm specifically looking for one that's Win7 8GB ram and an SSD. I can always install the ram or SSD myself but if I can buy it as is that would be great. There is another Latitude with a 256GB SSD but a 6420 I think. Intel 5th generation (Haswell/Devil's Canyon) preferred. I'm eyeballing the Thinkpad's too.

Posting again

Just picked up a t520
Guy posted it on CL as a t420, for $145. When I got there, he said he'd still take $145, then I noticed the screen flickers when you move the lid a certain way. So he took off $25.
So all in all, $120 for a t520

How'd I do Sup Forums? Also, ideas the screen issue? I haven't had a chance to open it up yet.

Something like this btw.

amazon.com/Dell-Latitude-Performance-Professional-Refurbished/dp/B01N3PY4MU/

Highest number you can get. I have a top spec X61t and its a nice machine, it cant play 720p youtube (there is a card that i could get that would allow it to do so though) and all i have ever really used it for is light browsing when my T420 is having shit done to it.

what should we name thinkpads running hackintosh? macpads? thinkmac?

iPad

kek this is fucking genius
btw is there a wifi card that is a big step up from the stock t420 wifi card but which also works with hackintosh?

Just bought a T410 for 110€ and I'm now running the servers of my friends on it. Someone tell me some cool features of it.

Thinkfag

dell dw1515 is top pick. does 5ghz (but not ac), also win7 supports it ootb, so fresh installs are easier to download all the other drivers

Does anybody had a T420 non-s with the WQHD mod?

by purchasing an actual thinkpad

OS X has no WiGig support, so probably no such card yet.

I'm too poor to afford a 20 year-old memorabilia.

I think that you could buy an original one, put in an adapter and voilá, you have a funtional Thinkfag.

ebay. $2.49 each from China.

Just got a x230

Should I put windows 10 or windows 7 on it?

Windows 7.
If you have to go with Windows 10, try Windows Server 2016.

isnt win 10 more optimised?

Yes, but I that shit is also TOO botnet for my tastes.

Chinese stickers are flat, I want a textured one.

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on one of the T540p Thinkpads. Good/bad? Local guy has one with the dock as well. They're up for sale around $450 in my area. Both have the i7 2.4/2.8 16GB ram 256GB SSD.

I too would like an answer for this.

I'm thinking about buying a thinkpad, t420 and x220 seem to look ok. But I want to know, in general, what can I expect from a used laptop of this age bought from ebay? Am I just gonna end up with a slow piece of shit that is'nt great for doing simple task with terrible battery life? Or will I end up great purchase that I can do pretty basic stuff from (surfing the net, writing documents, runescape, saving images) easily.

I know it's gonna be different in every case, but this general seems pretty good and you guys seem to know your stuff.

Install FreeBSD with OpenMotif and remove Intel ME from ROM chip.

How can I rebind the FN key to CTRL

Newer ThinkPads has this option in BIOS. Older ones needs bios Flash.

do you get used to it?

Yeah. Its not that difficult.

Those 320GB HDD's that are included with every business laptop, are almost always garbage. Usually Toshiba brand.

So get a SSD or a better quality hard disk. Installing W7 might be more work since there's no optical drive in the X220.

>no optical drive
Why not use a USB drive? Haven't used optical near ten years.

I just installed a clean install of windows 7 what lenovo software should i install besides WLAN and Ethernet driver?

Graphics driver?
Hotkeys thing?

Does the X230 have poor wifi capabilities?

Is it true that the x230 and X230T only use genuine batteries and that chink ones won't work with them? Is there some hack for it to work? Anyone know?

Having an issue with a T420 keyboard I just bought. I noticed the left arrow key needs a fair amount of force to register, and randomly acts as if it's being held down, without anyone touching the laptop. Noticed it when watching a stream, the player started switching random playlist order on and off, which is binded to that left arrow.
I take it I might need to pop the key off, does it use a regular scissor switch? If so I might pop it carefully and not break the tabs.

x1 carbon 2nd gen for equivalent of 350$
2k screen, i5-4300U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD
Should I buy it or the keyboard layout, trackpad and touchscreen strap instead of function keys too much of a cancer?

its not durable and has soldered everything

Yea the memory is soldered on the mobo. I'm wanting to buy a t540p that's mint but that trackpad is all kinds of fuckery.

fucking x220
how does it do it?
youtube.com/watch?v=LDmCmmvIA8A

That's actually pretty fucking awesome

Which Thinkpad is this?

T540s

Thank you~

dodgy screen flex cable

In the United States, what should I pay for a 1920x1080 w520 with i7-2720Q and 8gb of ram?

Please answer because I have to decide in a few minutes.

It actually better that way in my opinion. I definitely use FN more than CTRL so it being in a corner is better for me.

zmatt.net/unlocking-my-lenovo-laptop-part-1/

I have x220T 2640. I find it bearable, battery lasts between 1 and 3 hours untethered depending on use, although that life has been in decline. You can fix batt life by replacing with a newer batt. Whenever buying one of these you should try and talk whoever you're buying it off of to take out the HDD and the ram unless it is running win 7, then you should get there first and say you need to run a diagnositic and map the drive over then tell them to remove and ask for a reduction in price. I actually like the limited battery life, i feel like it forces me to be more conscious of the time I spend on the machine. For people with any sense of time it would probably be cumbersome as mobile computing option. I primarily use it for light browsing and playing poker.

map over hdd with win 7 pro to a healthy ssd
idk where the sweet spot is for ram, guessing 8gb. 16gb would likely be overkill and would take forever to come back from sleep.

someone plz do this

What mSATA for X220?
I'll be using mSATA + the default 320 GB HDD for now.

120 GB Samsung EVO?

not over 170usd

lol nice snipe

def worth 229 I didn't realize there was 28usd shipping when I bit tho lol

Anyone have experience with the Thinkpad yoga 15? Looking for something that'll last awhile, handle photoediting/processing, video editing, possibly some rendering and hopefully play just a few things like Cities Skylines and Overwatch better than my surface pro 2 does

yeah the shipping is why i didn't bid slightly higher

you won it?

no, i bid 204.50 or something and got outbid with zero seconds left

i hope the winner enjoys his no optical drive

ah that sucks, I bid up to like 190 or whatever I had it at.

dankpads.com/search?q=w520

I can choose a laptop "for work" from my research institute (have to be new, under $1800)

I consider a thinkpad or a dell xps13.
As of today, there's no fix for the dell's annoying adaptive brightness for Linux users.
For thinkpad, I am undecided between X1 carbon and x260

When will next gen kick in ?

>dankpads.com/search?q=w520

article is 9 months old but w/e

x220t 2640 dropped it a few days back and it is no longer recognizing the thinkvantage from within windoze. also lost audio. any resources for fixing this or did I just kill the sound on my derpad?

X60s MASTERRACE Reporting in :-)

The X270 is coming out in March apparently. I would imagine that the other ones come in at the same time

mSATA or SATA SSD for my T420?

msata
>lower power consumption
>less heat
>heat not being transferred to the palmrest
>can be mounted in the SATA bay anyway via $2 adapter
>light

Thanks.

Keep in mind the regular msata port is is sata 2 max.

What kind of idle cpu temp should I be expecting out of an X220? I'm wondering if mine could do with some new paste.

mine idles at low 40s

Any idea where to find replacements?
I'm obviously going to check connections tonight but,

t530 for 320
Intel Core i5-3320M 2,6 GHz
4GB Ram
320 GB HDD
1600 x 900 Display( HD+ ) with LED Backlight
Intel HD 4000
DVD±RW
good or not?

>320
EURO MONEYS

Is the difference between 1st gen core i5 and 2nd gen significant? Right now I can buy x201 with 8gb ram and a 160gb ssd for 160 euros or x220 with 4gb ram and a 320gb hdd for 205 euros. Which one is the better deal?

no lol, thats fair price for 8GB and 240SSD imo, even for euros

x201
1000% because of ssd/ram

any news on retro thinkpad?

I'm not sure if they're rumours or not, but apparently Lenovo has shut the project down.

This Autumn/Fall would be the 25th Anniversary of the Thinkpad, and the last blog post about it on the Lenovo blog was August 2015.

Either they're keeping it really quiet and not even going to announce at CES and are going to announce it later, or it's dead

Nobody really knows, but it probably won't happen because God's light has departed from the face of the Earth.

Even if they did build one they'd fuck up the aspect ratio.

My X230 with IPS Display and i5 just arrived. I'm glad I fell for this meme. Thank you Sup Forums!

gratz. Posting from exact same machine

I am envious of americlaps' cheap ThinkPads.

Every time I look on eBay, I see great configs for pennies. The sellers over there really don't have a clue.

Meanwhile, over here, it's impossible to find IPS / i7 X220s and all the sellers want to charge you 200EUR for a 2GB RAM config.

Where do I buy the eGPU adaptor for my x230?

You don't want the i7 version, and everything else is easy enough to upgrade.

It really is depressing. Every time I see something over here that goes for a decent price some asshole bids way too high on it like 2 days before it ends, and it ends up going for 200 euro anyway.

Also, fuck the germans and the french. They ask too much for bog standard configs and still ask me 25-35 euro in shipping even though I live right next door.

Any reasons for that? I thought the USB3.0 was a nice addition.

Take X220 and buy any SSD disc

And it is. He is poorfag

How to monitor docking events on Linux with the newer series 3 dock?

GearBest

some reasons to consider the x220 over x201:
-can max the ram to 16gb if you want to virtualize shit
-intel hd 3000 is better for an egpu setup
-ssd in the x201 is probably as old as the computer. x220 has an msata slot for the option of two disks
-16:9 may be a dumb ratio, but you'll be getting 25k more pixels and your weird gag fetish porn will fit better
-can put in an ips screen if it doesn't already have one

You can probably get a cheaper mid-range X230 for the same price as an i7 X220. It even has two USB 3.0 with every processor.
