In CPU bound games, 100%.
In crysis 3 1080p ultra with a GTX 1080
a 2500k at 4.5GHz gets ~32fps on average
with a 6700k around the same clockspeed you get ~80fps.

yeah, because many games simply aren't CPU intensive. They rely primarily on fancy looking graphics from the GPU instead of hard maths and calculations from the CPU, heavy AI, CPU physics simulation, etc will all hit a CPU very hard, but not all games require these so plenty of new games can get buy on older CPUs no problem.
If you play CSGO, Skyrim, things like that. Sure a 2500k IS still relevant and 100% viable even at 1440p. But GTA5, ARMA, Crysis, etc. They'll fuck that little i5 right up.
