Temporal horizon of the internet

Is it just me, or is there always a cutoff point in age where internet content goes from fairly common to very rare?
For example, nowadays I often see 2009 stuff but rarely 2008 stuff.

Also, what's the oldest internet content you've seen that's still available today?
e621 apparently has mid-80's furry porn, which looks strange due the ancient compression format.

Isn't there a law of some sort that says the longer something is popular, the more likely it'll be to stay popular? Can't for the life of me remember the name, though.

Streisand effect?

Yeah, that. I'm just randomly talking shit though; I can't answer OP's question.

Streisand is when someone is asking for content to be removed it will be shared even more.

I know but it seemed similar to what he was trying to say

I dunno about a cutoff, but yeah, the internet does forget things.
Seen it happen to some obscure movies, porn, txt, pictures etc...

hehe :)

To answer OP's question: it's not just you.

I noticed this back in 2013, when content hosted on the Internet predating 2005 started disappearing from search results. The problem stems for lack of long term hosting or other issues that prevent the content from being indexed by search engines.

Honestly, blame Google. They are actively trying to destroy the Internet's history.

I'm not a fan of Google but blaming them is retarded. They're a search engine, they don't go around and erase things. Hell I'm amazed they never delete videos on YT.

If you wrote a blog on MySpace years back it is only logical it is going to disappear unless somebody archives it. And archiving EVERYTHING forever is impossible.

Include in your search a timeframe: 199X...2005

i remember these flash cartoons that used to be on a site that i thought was called csbanana or something, and a lot of them were of counter-strike antics, but there was one where the guy tied a couch to the top of his car and made people sit on it "because of his gay parephenalia" taking up space in the car. But as of a few years ago for the life of me i could never find it, like they took it down or something.
there must have been 10 or so flash animations its quite a shame they're gone

it's almost like people can delete things from the internet

If it was in existence up until recently, it's likely archived by archive.org.

no i remember watching these when it was probably 2001-2003, i noticed they were gone around 2007-2009

i think what happened is he sold the domain he had them on and never uploaded them anywhere else

average user age stays the same but the people change (new generation). go figure they post what they saw a few years ago

>they dont go around deleting things
yes they do, theyvdo it frequently. infinity chan was removed from search engines and so was Sup Forums for one

archive. org is alright but they only get a majority American websites

>e621 apparently has mid-80's furry porn, which looks strange due the ancient compression format.
Holy shit wait wait wait, I want to see this. Do you have a link? What would it be tagged as?

>I am literally curious about seeing the old compression scheme

...

...

You may continue.

>nearly $6k for anime images

wow.

...

Turns out it was late 80s.
If you look up the "1988" tag you'll see it, it's the black and white one.

...

>majority American websites
That is bullshit, all of the clans from eastern europe I remember from playing SAMP in 2007 have their shitty pages archived with multiple snapshots despite not having any SEO and not getting any pageviews whatsoever.

...

MOAR

>9.2kb for an image that size
Well I'll be.

I don't think the weird texture/appearance is due to compression, that's just how shading was done on digital pictures. Look at any screenshots of paint programs or digital media from the 80s/early 90s and you'll see that comic-book-like dot texture. I'm not sure if that was due to technological constraints or just the style of the time, though.

...

...

...

That's the oldest "digital" one (and it's not compressed at all), regular drawn one goes even further to early 60's and as far as the furfaggotry goes (non-porn) this one is from 1937

hi (((user)))

>$70,000 a year
>I can't even get 10 subscribers on YouTube

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty damn close to sure that the universe is deliberately working against me.

You should be able to at least get 10 pity or bot subscriptions.

What do you make?

Network effect?

i have so many interesting and unique and good things in my favorites on my old youtube account (pre 2010s)
i went to check it now and literally every single video is gone

You know, you'd think that, but people literally won't even click on my links when I post videos in relevant threads/subreddits/forums.

I'm making a PC component and peripheral review channel, and I'll also be making tutorials of how to do things which are otherwise poorly explained in Google results/youtube videos (think, software tutorials with Audacity, Sony Vegas, Steam, etc)

I need to produce more content but the 5 videos I have up now literally only get a few views per day, if any at all. The last two days I've gotten exactly 3 views. I just don't god damn get it. My videos are in English, they aren't crap quality, the information in them is (as far as I can tell) actually useful and accurate, yet 13 year olds who record an unboxing in their living room on a 6 year old cellphone with no editing whatsoever can get thousands of views. I just don't god damn get it.

well it IS a kind of compression, you could say. Called dithering. it's expressing grayscales with an 1-bit palette. It could be done with colors too, the whole point is to cram more colors in there than is actually in the palette.

This type of dithering creating the repeating patterns is very computationally efficient and does not require comparing pixels with their neighbours, which is nice.

Post a link so we can critique? Id at least make a point to try and watch if the videos are decent.

Overpopulated niche, breh.

>not compulsively just saving everything you enjoy

>dithering
THAT'S the word I was looking for. Also thanks for the explanation user.

Sure thing, this is probably my favorite so far: youtu.be/KC0DZjEKvEI

But that's the thing, I want people to watch/read my stuff because it's actually useful or entertaining.

Overpopulated but with people who have no idea what they're talking about. I was getting sick of internet celebrities reading the amazon description and not explaining anything or doing any real tests or, you know, teaching people more than what they could find out by looking at a picture of the box. Also a lack of good information on less popular manufacturers or products. Just search for the sk hynix sl308; the top result is a newegg video of a different model and the second video is in russian.

I really appreciate any feedback. Based on the number of likes I get vs how many views, I'm under the assumption that my videos aren't complete trash... but then nobody watches them. Maybe I'm just being impatient, I have no idea.

My hard drive is 128gbytes.
Actually it makes me realize that while these were good, there is nothing that i really enjoy.

while I'm inclined to agree with you, I have to mention that me != normie. they're markedly different, which includes their youtube interests. it's a sad reality.

That's what I'm starting to think. I still want to produce videos, I legitimately enjoy doing it (and helping the handful of people who watch them), but... reee normies, get off my board, etc. I'll just keep trudging forward with it, I suppose.

well first problem is you're not screaming in the mic spouting inane shit

that is a very tiny harddrive in this day and age.
>there is nothing that i really enjoy
that's sad, user.

God damn it I knew I was fucking up something

also you gotta find more clickbaity titles

like "THIS SSD RESURRECTED MY DEAD COMPUTER AND TURNED IT INTO A QUANTUM MACHINE !!! HAS SCIENCE GONE TOO FAR !?"

kek, don't tempt me user

You forgot the >(SOCIAL EXPERIMENT)(GONE SEXUAL!)

isn't it like the norm with the new ssd technology?
it's kinda funny actually - first i got a 128gb hdd which was very big at the time and then a decade later i got a 128gb ssd which was very big at the time

I'm in that weird part of youtube again, thumbs up if you're watching this in 2017.

...

don't get too carried away, long titles get cut off

ah, if it's an ssd, then yes. still, people usually have a 1TB hard drive along with that for storage.

You need more simpler graphs, something that is easy to understand and nice to look at.
That is unless your content is intended for a more tech savvy audience.

Also, give it time, you don't become a big hit overnight.

Isn't the limit like over 100 characters?

>ywn be fucked in the ear by another man
This is the darkest timeline..

The user that requested a link here. I think maybe the titling would help out a bit. If I were some rando looking for a comparison my initial thought would be to search "ssd faster than hdd" or some other caveman type shit. Maybe just catering to that initial vague search query would help a bit.

Other than that its actually pretty well put together, except for the initial lighting focus at the beginning of the video. Also, normies would probably consider you more on the monotone side, so i guess putting in a little more energy could help too. Don't be autistic like generic twitch streamers, just seem more "enthusiastic".

...

one thing I've learned with internet and affiliate marketing is that we are the severe minority and should not be used as an example. we may reach 1% or so of the total internet usage. even at 5% we can be ignored.

What this guy said, but don't be too "enthusiastic" like that little shit Linus.

Also, speaking about LinusTechTips, why are they using clickbaity thumbnails now?

...

>Honestly, blame Google
What does Google have to do with that?

Blame www architecture and the hosting model which make long-term hosting impossible or impractical. (and praise the guys from Internet Archive)

That's censorship, but it has nothing to do with "actively erasing internet history".

The problem with www is that there's just too much information. Like, a shitload of it. Most of it is irrelevant by now, and not worth keeping forever or archiving. Overall S/N of the web is the lowest ever in human history.

Sup Forums is still indexed on their engine.

>You need more simpler graphs, something that is easy to understand and nice to look at.
Hmm, hadn't even considered that. That's smart though, thanks user

Gotcha on the title. I just pulled that one out of thin air, but planning it around searches... honestly I don't know why I didn't think of that.

>initial lighting focus
Yep, I picked up a DSLR a few days ago so I could have better control over the focus and lighting and everything. My upcoming videos shouldn't have that problem.

>monotone
Fuck, I was worried about that. I'll work on the voiceovers. Much appreciated, user.

Right, I always keep that in mind but I trust Sup Forums's opinion on the purely technical aspects of the video (lighting, audio, etc). I also know Sup Forums doesn't give a shit about feelings so they aren't gonna beat around the bush.

>why are they using clickbaity thumbnails now?
I actually saw a comment on one of his videos specifically asking about this and why they don't cover "Tech Tips" anymore, and Linus replied. He said something to the tune of "people don't want to watch that". As much as I hate youtubers, I have a lot of respect for the guy because they legitimately do have an extensive library of useful videos (explaining what an SSD is, how NVMe is different, etc)

What's on her arm?

This is the kind of people I waste my time reading their stupid opinions.
