why has technology stagnated like this?

What do you do besides web browsing?

My i7-860 got replaced over a year ago and I couldnt wait to get rid of that slow garbage.

everything
i can play any modern game ultra 60+fps

Lol, no you can't.

Play Crysis 3 at ultra, play GTA 5 at ultra, Witcher 3, etc etc.

And further, the frame dips you'd get in those games even if you COULD get near 60fps would be disgusting, you'd easily see drops into the 30s.

AMD releasing shit all those years.

So you're admitting intel colludes with marketers to make games run worse?

my Q6600 machine from 11 years ago still just werks

....yes that's exactly it.

I'm not saying that your old as fuck CPU is causing frame dips because it can't keep up, it has nothing to do with the fact it's now approaching 8 years old.

But nothing has changed other than fake memes marketer-desu

>he actually believes this

Enjoy your "smooth" 60 "fps"

Who is this semen demon?

>2007
>buy a E6600 machine
>2013
>throw a LGA771 E5450 Xeon into it
>Still using that today
>my only reason to upgrade is I feel dumb spending $80+ on fucking DDR2 ram

Zen pls be good

not him but I do have a i5 750 and a gtx 1070 and it runs perfectly, mind you I have a 3.6 overclock but I still see no reason to 'upgrade'

It doesn't "run perfectly"

I hate when faggots like you pretend on the internet.

I have a GTX 1070, I also have an i7-920 at 3.8Ghz.
It runs like DOG ass compared to my i7-6700k rig when using the SAME GPU, at the SAME resolution.

Literally went from 30-40's in GTA 5 to solid 80fps+

Same thing in witcher 3.

Only the CPUs are stagnating
GTX 580 - a 6 years old flagship is now obsolete to the GTX 1050
I would upgrade in your case.
Having at least 2500k should be still fine, but your CPU really is obsolete
The difference between the first gen and the second gen i3/i5/i7s is pretty big. Probably even bigger than between 2500k and 6600k

It hasn't. You're the one who's stagnated.

you're looking at about a 50% IPC improvement going from that to skylake

my 970 was being bottlenecked by my i7 860.

i know your 1070/1080s are too.

>It's already been six years since the 580
Fuck

Yup.
I can't believe my 9400 GT is now 11 generations old. It can't play anythinng, but it still feels like yesterday when i got it.
I'm currently using 1070, but i'll never forget my 9400.

I've got an i7 950 overclocked to 4.2ghz paired with a GTX 970. Would I really see much of a difference if I upgraded to the latest CPU?

No

>don't even know what resolution he's running at

Moore's law is gone forever, faggots
technologyreview.com/s/601441/moores-law-is-dead-now-what/

i7 950 @4,2GHz with GTX 970?
Short answer: No
Long answer: Maybe a little bit, nothing you should worry about.
i7 950 at any frequency with 1070/1080?
Hell yes

Really doesnt even matter for most of those games, resolution is mainly gonna effect GPU, only a few games get hit heavily on CPU when changing resolution.

>1997
>buy a Pentium II 233
>20 years later
>I'm still using a Pentium II 233
>no reason to upgrade

why has technology stagnated like this?

I honestly think I could get by with haswell/skylake cpus for pretty much ever

also if this actually happens and no improvements are ever made from this point, that should make encryption safe from being cracked by quantum computers?

YOU have stagnated, not technology. There are definitely reasons to upgrade from an i5 750, you just apparently aren't doing any of it.
Modern gaming, VR, rendering, compiling, machine learning etc.

I built a new PC after like 5 years. The difference is mind blowing desu.

my current machine still got good old bios running on it with no fancy uefi bullshit so that will probably also be a 5 year+ upgrade.

just for fun i tried to source parts last month but after looking at the fact,
that there are 2 board categories for intel cpus (2-4cores and 6-8) now, i don't want to build an x86 machine anymore.
with all the shit intel is doing and amd probably fucking up ryzen,
and that, totally weird noncompliant usb 3.1gen2, spec (what a shit name btw)
not being supported properly i will wait till the waters clear.

>2012
>buy a GTX 550ti
>5 years later
>still using a 550ti
>only updated SSD since

Why change it if it's not broken.

>Why change it if it's not broken.

But it is broken. For newer things it is too slow. It is only not broken for older content.

Yeah I have a Sandy Bridge ES Xeon E3 1270 with 16 TBs of DDR3 at 1333 MHz.
No reason to upgrade from Sandy.

*GB

If gpu utilisation is lower than ~80% at max setting and res in a modern game like doom or witcher 3 = change cpu

No other to upgrade cpu for gayming.

Fuck you nigga, I'm still stuck with an i3. My LAPTOP has an i5, my desktop the i3. Fucking can't play anything except Quake @ 144[120]fps/hz. It's bullshit. There's no "detrimental" stock setting, I have to squeeze ini files/configs to try and max out to (usually) 45fps, 60 as a goal that I only occasionally get to - now, thats in terms of stable fps. Typically, I push ~200 highest on any game, but it drops to 15 very often.

Is my i3 damaged? Something tells me 200 fps with constant dips to 15 isn't something software related

fuck off kilo

>runs perfectly
No it doesn't, stop lying on the internet.

Girlish Number

>bought an AMD Athlon 64 3000+
>I don't even know how many years later
>2017
>No reason to upgrade

>he fell for 3GB meme when literally no one need over 2GB
oh, i'm laffin'

It's actually 2.75GB, Speccy is just retarded

x5470 owner here cannot believe I still use my mobo from early 2009

Still more than you'll need at least until 2007.

Because your not a retard who runs out and buys all the latest shit that is pretty much the same as all the 10yo hardware that existed before...

My 10yo comp runs fast on a HDD, i couldn't imagine upgrading because I'm not stupid.

Because Intel are trying to let AMD catch up to no avail.

I'm using an i7 870 with a GTX 1060. Can max out GTA V and BF4 easily with a 60fps cap set.

Same here, only thing I upgraded was my HDD to an SDD which made it feel brand new again.

Because Jewtel would rather get money than make any progress

Video games are for babies

I have my FX-8350 still, no reason to upgrade at all. It's still the best desktop CPU.

>1987-30
>no using i80286
literally laughing at you

You don't even need more ram than 1mb

>1987-30

Fuck, I'm too tired, I mean 1987+30

Sure thing, mate

Have a 2500k and R9 270x. Should I upgrade?

similar situation for me,

I have a 2500k and a r9 280x.

Should I upgrade CPU or GPU??

2500K should be still fine, especially when overclocked
280X should be fine as well, it's kinda balanced
270X is kinda meh now, it's weaker than the 1050, but i guess it doesn't matter unless you want to play at high settings

I clocked mine to 3,4GHz back in 2011 so I could play ArmA properly. Still using it.

Why is the bang for your buck -ratio of the 750 still unbeaten after so many years?

well obviously it's because you're not buying enough AMD cpus. How will intel release another superior CPU if you don't buy an amd cpu to compete with it?

really makes you think

It got beaten by the 2500k

Everyone's overclocking their old CPU's so of course they all run fine.

These are the same smart motherfuckers who are just gonna kill them before Ryzen comes out.

I dunno, what do you want to accomplish.

>really makes you think

really kill yourself back to dumbas memespamming retard

You're a fucking puff faggot. I have an i7 920 and what is frame drops

Mine was at 4ghz for 5 years but it can no longer handle 4ghz stable unless I crank up the vcore, so I'm at 3.8 right now
