Apple macbook is made of thin aluminium which a bullet goes through like butter. It's the PCB that is most likely to hinder a bullet. It's many layers of copper and fibreglass.

Few important points of notice.

It is an older Macbook, all the newer models are much thinner.
The bullet obviously entered at an extreme angle, which meant it had much more to go through and dissipated a lot more energy.
Considering it was in a backpack and the bullet entered at that angle if he hadn't been wearing the backpack it would probably have missed or only grazed him, so it didn't "likely" save his life.

I've got a relatively thick laptop compared to that Macbook Pro, so it would probably take the same bullet at least as effectively. That said, the shooter used a pistol. I am not so certain if a laptop might take a rifle bullet of any reasonable caliber.
