Looking just to have another running laptop in the house.
Its a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a nice 1280x1024 screen.
Specs: 120GB PATA HD 1GB RAM, 2GB max Pentium M 1.4GHz ATI 9600
I tried Arch Linux with Budgie, ran like shit. And so did LXDE. Ubuntu was taking 2 hours to install so I gave up. Ran Windows XP fine. Now loading 7 on it just to have it working.
What would this thing run smooth? I'm thinking I make a coffee can directional antenna, and put it on the garage so I can use to to look up car manuals, and shit. Maybe stream music.

not even worth the time anymore, not even trolling
t400, x220, t420, t430 are all better options
t400 can be found for $80 and under nowadays with 4gb of ram
Leo Williams
It runs 7 pretty decent. Imma find some ram, and make it work like this. maybe reload some light version of 7 that netbooks used to have

Arch with i3
Jacob Baker
Lubuntu or Xubuntu for ease of use
Landon Price
Try Crux. The only time consuming part of the install is the kernel compilation. After that, should run as snappy as a pool full of alligators.
Lincoln Russell
Gonna try Lubuntu. I just wish this damn thing would boot of USB. running low on blank discs.
Austin Stewart
Lubuntu or Puppy Dog Linux
but either way it will be a rough time.

its been like 8 years since I've seriously dabbled in Linux. What do now? config, needed downloads, etc

Don't be an idiot, Windows 10 is heavier than 7 and it became even heavier after the AU.

No fucking joke, install gentoo.
you can compile it to run on your machine and draw out it's full power at 32-bit. You'll bring back life to it and watch all the chinese cartoons you want at 720p.

>t400, x220, t420, t430 are all better options I been seeing x220 for less than $100
