PC is dead

RIP PC

businesstimes.com.sg/technology/personal-computer-sales-fall-for-fifth-year-in-a-row

So, what will you move to now that PC is dead? Will you start using tablets? Phones maybe?

>"Stagnation in the (personal computer) market continued into the fourth quarter of 2016 as holiday sales were generally weak due to the fundamental change in PC buying behaviour," Gartner principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa said in a release.

OUCH

>Another factor was that people are putting off replacing desk or laptop computers because they use them infrequently, opting instead to go online with smartphones, according to Ms Kitagawa.

OUCH

PC will never die so long as businesses and governments continue using them.

Sure it will die. Innovation will just slow down because the market is shrinking.

Even Intel is slowly dying. They completely abandoned tick-tock and completely slowed down improvements to their consumer chips and are concentrating on enterprise and CPUs for server farms.

That's why Skylake and Kaby Lake have nearly identical performance.

This slowdown will impact nearly all aspects of PC ecosystem as people just start using cheap tablets and phones more and more.

Have you ever used a tablet or a phone? They are trash. The only people who settle for that crap are either poorfags or people who spend 90% of their awake hours on facebook.

Not to imply the latter two are mutually exclusive.

This is kinda the problem. People abandoned PCs after years of crap. They can still get that same crap performance in a phone or tablet without spending 2k on a desktop.

Yeah I'm permanently replacing my Windows 10 desktop with a GTX 1080 with a 2013 Nexus 7.

retarded gaymer detected! fuck off back to Sup Forums, manchild.

PC is useful for many tasks but the poor need smartphones more.
They're communication devices more than the PC, which is relatively difficult to carry around.

I'll kill myself when PC's are phased out and the only supported gaming platform are consoles.

I don't want to live in a future were we browse the web on a smart phone, write code on a tablet and play vidya on a console.

How do we stop them?

I wonder if this actually means the end of consumer OS Windows and a move towards linux as the consumer/hobbyist OS.

maybe consumer brand garbage is finally dying and people are learning to remote connect to faster and more secure home servers instead

PCs are needed less and less. "Information economy" can be driven by phones and tablets easily. Only specific tasks need PCs and those people are few.

Your brain is dead, retard. Kill yourself.

>PC market has been dying for 5 years
>AMD hasn't competed in 5 years
>AMD now has a competitive architecture
Who's excited about /pcrenaissance/ in here?

Most people either build them or buy laptops, rarely anyone buys computers other than business.

Computers just need less upgrades.

Most of my friends just use a smartphone with LTE. Thats the only tech they need in their lifes.

>>AMD now has a competitive architecture
kek'd so fucking true. AMD only has a competitive product because Intel gave up on PC market as they're re-architecting and attacking mobile and server-space.

>PC is dieing!!! xD
yeah, just like the 90s and 2000s scare eh?

No one's buying those shitty prebuilts anymore?

We'll see in 4 years I guess since that's when intels brand new arch will launch.

Until then, they're at a dead end with the core arch. They've tapped it for every ounce of performance and power reduction possible.

this.

lmoaing at your life OP.

yea right lol

>No one's buying those shitty prebuilts anymore?
no one's buying the parts either. parts market was always like 1/10th of the pre-built market.

2017 IS THE YEAR OF LINUX

barely, with a good phone you can do almost everything a desktop could do. i imagine a future where docking could be a bigger thing.

>So, what will you move to now that PC is dead?
I will keep using PCs, thank you very much. It's not dead for me and 'market trends' aren't going to convince me otherwise

Who will design the tablets and phones if we don't have desktops?

>normals are abandoning computers because they are too stupid to use them
>"platform is dead Sup Forums we have to bail!!!!"

Yeah no thanks.
>>>/reddit/

Do these figures take into account people that custom build theirs, or does it only count those that buy prebuilt crap? I also highly doubt it takes into account aftermarket, which in the wake of slowed progression, I'd say has become increasingly viable for many.

I myself have lived the past 18 years (aka the entire time I've ever owned a pc) entirely in the aftermarket, never having had the opportunity to custom build from new nor buy prebuilt, yet I just built a system about 4 months ago that I'm for the most part content with (even as a lolgaymur), and I would never give up PCs for a shitty phone or a tablet that's little more than a novelty item.

PCs aren't dead. The market's just saturated.

fewer not less

>too stupid to use them
Or maybe we're the stupid ones for clinging to all this archaic pointless shit.

Maybe the future really is thin light clients and tablets/phones that you can take anywhere.

TABLETS AND PHONES ARE STILL "PERSONAL COMPUTERS" REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH EVERYONE?!

Custom builds and parts are literally less than 1% of PC sales.

citation requested

Less than 1% of the users actually use computers for something useful.

Phone hardware is a joke though, INSI attacks makes it all pointless

Live in obscurity as a full autismo

>implying gaming is useful

kYS

>within your lifetime using a PC will be viewed as archaic
>when people find out that you use a PC instead of a locked-down facebook machine like everyone else, they'll think you're stuck in the past

Dark times are ahead, friends.

I am using laptops since 2012. They use less power, use less space and provide mobility. Every major electronics store in my region has 90% laptops on display and a few HP/Dell desktops because no one wants them anymore.

Once Windows 10 is ported to ARM, we can have slim laptops with all the features of desktop minus the heating and fan noises.

die PC, long live Mac!

>with all the features of desktop minus the heating and fan noises and performance.
FTFY

don't they just count OEM prebuilts?
what if you count hardware sales?
intel, amd, nvidia would freaking crash in stock price if it was true

Well you can never have a perfect laptop. Compromise little performance for more freedom and longer battery life.

fuck off shitlord, gayming is what will probably keep the desktop pc alive and affordable, go install your shit pajeet custom rom on your tablet

they likely pay more for the phone then they would ever pay for the desktop, while the desktop would last them longer.

A buddy of mine went from laptops to an iPad with a tiny logitech keyboard. he does everything on it. The dude runs a >$100k/year business off his ipad. nuts.

>MUH BULLSHIT REASONS FOR BEING MENTALLY UNDERDEVELOPED
t. buttmad manchild

any dual core will get you by even today, there are very few tasks that demand more

I have a 400€ smartphone and do almost everything with it. Banking, Messaging, Signing and faxing contracts, watch movies, navigating etc

The only thing I need PC for software development and some games.

PCs will continue to exist, but only as workstations.

How do these people get so rich through simple business ideas? I am struggling to start a small business but the cash flows don't add up. Too many overheads just for the office.

Macs are also PC's retard. Matter of fact, Apple has abandoned their iMac, Mac Mini and Mac Pro completely.

It's a sad reality, but it's reasonable. A personal computer is both a consumption and a production device. A great deal of people who used the personal computer before only used it for consumption. Tablets and phones seem like a more attractive option for consumption nowadays, but they are completely not suited for production - which is why it is extremely sad - machines that can be used for production are produced in smaller and smaller numbers.

At this point even offices are letting go of bulky desktop aside from servers. You only find powerful desktops in engineering and graphic design studios where they need huge computing power and high end GPU's. They are however a small portion of the PC market. The recent introduction of gayming laptops by Razr, Acer, HP and MSI, soon even the manchildren will be using laptops for gaming.

This nigga gets it

You can do all casual tasks on a smartphone. The graph in OP is misleading because laptops are what's being cannibalized by smartphones and honestly laptops have always been shit.

use a tablet for anything

you now attached a keyboard, congrats, less functional laptop for more then a laptop costs.

you know how fun it is to poke screens with a laptop? there is a reason that shit never took off outside of foldable laptops.

Laptops are fine. Laptops are still perfectly capable of production (even though I prefer proper desktop workstations).

You also forgot programming. Everything in our oiffices is a powerful desktop computer with two monitors.

if gameing was taken into account that number would be between 10 and 20%

he runs a drop shipping website and he fulfills orders that people place on his site. he draws a ton of fucking traffic tho. he basically makes between 10-15% on each item that he resells.

all that from an ipad and he works maybe 2hrs each day. I've watched him work because that was fucking unbelievable to me. he has some ipad apps that automate the shit out of things and he can answer questions, re-issue chargebacks, handle returns etc with few taps on the screen.

the due is not super-smart but he's well-organized and he loves doing that kind of work. he slacks off and does who knows what for the rest of the day.

MBP supports 2x5K + its own Retina display. It is impressive.

I haven't used a computer with as retina display so I can't comment.

what does it count,

big name oems?
small custom shops
all parts sold
what?

Because everybody already has one. Same as with tablets. The sales will even out over time

Nope. That article is wrong. It's the sale of pre built pcs that's declining.

Just because people aren't buying prebuilts doesnt mean they aren't buying pcs.

Production of naked pictures by sluts has definitely gone up.

Honestly, talentless shits shouldn't be making music, movies or writing. It's only making it worse for everybody. Just look at what happened to soundcloud and EDM in general a couple of years back. Suddenly a huge influx of faggots and niggers started making music in fruity loops and as a result the whole scene practically died from oversaturation.

Why would someone who doesn't play games upgrade? Even a core 2 duo is fine for normies.

Could it really be that substantially more people are building computers? Almost everyone I know is afraid to touch computer parts.

>Honestly, talentless shits shouldn't be making music, movies or writing.
I disagree with you. To find out whether you have talent for something or not, you must do it. So everyone should have an easy way to start. Including people you refer to as talentless hacks.

It's not just that people don't upgrade because they're fine, people are moving away from PCs in massive numbers.

In 2014, mobile surpassed desktop in web usage. that trend is only accelerating

smartinsights.com/mobile-marketing/mobile-marketing-analytics/mobile-marketing-statistics/

Us PC users are old fags now. Normies and young don't use PCs. I saw my 10 year old nephew during family Xmas dinner and he didn't even know how to use my laptop. He only uses tablets and a game console.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

If you're gonna make bait make it believable

No, facebook shitters abandoned PC. Which is good. These people don't do anything worthwhile with their computers anyway, they just shitpost and virtue signal on facebook.

>>implying gaming is useful
>implying that humans haven't been playing games since before recorded history
>implying recreation isn't useful for relieving stress and socialising

>Normies don't wanna buy a large, heavy, non portable Facebook machine
Color me surprised. But how does this mean the death of PCs in any way?

Oh no rampant and wasteful consumerism what will we ever do

>percentage

Fucking irrelevant.

math illiteracy affected kid

Phones are devices geared toward consumption.
PCs are for consumption and creation.
It's only natural that the vast majority of people would use the device for consumption given the choice.

The PC is not dying. There are too many people who still actually want and use them, myself included.

What you're seeing with the decline is the normie who kept saying "user, you know computers right? Can you come round and sort out my PC, all I did was click on this cute purple gorilla thing and now things are popping up all over" fucking off to tablets where they're protected from themselves. This is a GOOD thing!

The only downsides I can see are PC prices going up, because they'll be a niche thing for nerds like they were in the 80s and so demand will be lower, and if you actually *wanted* to be pestered by the guy 3 doors away to fix his malware infested Packard Bell shitbox every other week (this was great pocket money when I was about 14) then that scene's probably dried up by now already. Otherwise it can only be a good thing that your average Facebooker has moved on to phones and tablets.

...

Dream on user.

I'm unironically considering selling all my desktops and buying a single 11" to 13" laptop.

I wonder why people don't buy new computers. don't they want those sweet 5% performance increases with the new processors?

Sales fall because there are no reasons to upgrade.

I've built 2 PCs in the last decade. My current one is from mid 2013 and still runs all games fine and there aren't many other reasons to upgrade for the normie user.

Maybe VR will do the trick.

Maybe this will push the hardware market to focus on meaningful improvements instead of marginal gimmick based cash grabs.

Bullshit

This is prebuilts. Part sales has climbed.

you are a retard. SOHO thin clients are what keeps pc alive

Really considering buying a Laptop for work, my company Laptop is fine but it's lagging horrendously from time to time. I honestly spend more time using it rather than my meme gayming PC.

Blame AMD. Almost providing no competition.

this.

market saturation is the only reason. All other opinions are people projecting.

I hate using phones and tablets. They only exist for their convenience of portability. Otherwise, PC is always preferred to work on.

The problem is that normies don't work. They only want to chat with friends via text and social media and take pictures of themselves getting drunk and being whores. If they do anything that might be easier on a real keyboard, they buy an Apple.

I'm using hp Elitebook with docking station at work and at home
it's so convenient, no need to plug a shit ton of cables in every time

Fuck you shill

I own a 3k rig and I use my nexus 6 70% of the time. Can't beat that mobility.

Pretty sure the gaehmer custom PC is growing. Good thing too, it will keep the desktop alive. You can always make gpus and CPUs better by consuming more power/bigger dies (to an extent). It will be a long time before mobiles if ever catch up to a gtx 1080 or a high end i7. Arm will reach maximum performance on silicon in the not too distant future like current Intel CPUs.

iPhone/iPad CPUs are already performing at desktop Haswell i3 levels.
