good deal. hope it all works

My dome keyboard costed me 2 dollars at a surplus sale

Mechanical keyboards are meme

>t. I have never touched a Model M before

Newfag, why are you happy?

Tell that to my RSI whenever I spend too long on my dome KB.
My mech is worth every dollar I spent on it, and I spent way too much on it.

I heard the lexmark ones were poorly made and sometimes weren't even mechanical, but it looks like that one is. I'm sure it's not too bad.

Found an IBM Selectric for $2.99 today that I'm going to attempt to fix and sell.

Hi.

just got home, currently typing on it as we speak. man this thing is great. it is in such good condition as well

what interface is the cord?

Model M isn't a mechanical keyboard.

Yes it is, you dumb fuck

wow nice blog! subscribed!

It's a membrane keyboard idiot. It just has the clicky sound

>It's a membrane keyboard idiot. It just has the clicky sound
No idiot, it's a buckling spring.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckling_spring

Ps/2

I was expecting it to be the one that was before ps/2.

You're making me regret my USB only motherboard user

also i have those speakers.

They are high quality keyboards that are a an absolute pleasure to type on and despite being 20+ years old they can run for about $100

Lexmark made Model M keyboards identical to the ones IBM made

One of these is made by IBM circa 1987
Another is made by Lexmark in 1993
Can you spot the difference?
Hint, its not the IBM logo color change

Oh, and since the pic is blur-tastic, it was made 8 days after OP's.

I can't. Halp plox

...

sorry user, I have had these speakers for like 8 years and absolutely love them too for what i got them for

...

the chords? or maybe the font lol?

It's a buckling and membrane

Ah so mine (OP) is Lexmark, does that mean anything? same quality?

Its buckling spring over membrane which is why it has 2KRO. The model F is fully mechanical.

As far as I know Lexmark took over IBM manufacturing plant in the 90's.

The molds are identical
Key caps are the same
Feel is the same
Springs, and most other parts are interchangeable.

They used a cheaper metal plate and a bit less plastic, that's it really

>USB only motherboard
I have to admit I was a bit surprised to still see a PS/2 port on my X99 motherboard.

I figured upgrading from Q6600 and DDR2 platform, surely X99 with DDR4 would have gotten rid of it. But nope, still had a PS/2 port.

>no windows key
why do people use shit like this?

As I understand it uses hardware interrupts which are at least technically better than USB's polling business, though I doubt it makes any real world difference.

i've been trying to find an old keyboard like this. either over priced or some bullshit

It makes a world of difference with "pro gamers" so they keep it on mobos

because Ctrl+Esc exists.
Bet you still use ctrl+alt+del to get to the task manager and go through the lock screen

I you really need windows keys then get a unicomp

>because Ctrl+Esc exists.

How does that let you use WinKey + D, you fucking retard?

>because Ctrl+Esc exists.
this does nothing on ubuntu. I use windows key to oben the dash and launch applications. I am not a mouseclicker faggot.
>Bet you still use ctrl+alt+del to get to the task manager and go through the lock screen
no

Good lord I want one of their products so bad. Do you actually have that one?

no I have an original grey badge model M.
You can buy them on amazon or their website. Occasionally one will pop up on massdrop

Stop being embarrassed with your furry porn.

Unicomp is SHIT quality. Fuckers are holding on to the buckling spring patent too, and wont let more competent companies make them.

Fucking cunts

What are you babbling about now, shit for brains. If you don't have anything intelligent to say then go stick your head in an oven, you dumb fucking shit stain.

>Unicomp is SHIT quality
Thats not true. They still use the original tooling. They offer a different case with less plastics, but you can still buy the original

Good one.

I'm saying you shouldnt have to hide your pron viewing habits by needing to minimize all windows.

The lexmark model m keyboards have thinner plastic and thinner metal plates but they are functionally the same.

I have one too:

also supports N-key-rollover, which only some recent usb keyboards do

anyone think Model M is overrated as fuck?

>actuation literally at max key travel
>membrane keyboard in disguise
>muh metallic noise
>muh winkeyless

lol are you expecting it to have Cherry MX switches, newfag?

It is a mechanicals action over a membrane.
Still mechanical. More mechanical than a topre.

*paching* *paching*

>current year
>only some recent usb keyboards
third world tech: the post

my cherry g80 3000 from 1994 cost me 2 Euro from a used shop.

>tfw no M13 TKL with a 3 button trackpoint

youre gonna ruin the cord storing it like that

Rescued this out of my loft the other day.

That is such a good fucking deal OP. I know a guy that found a sealed one in box for like $5.
I feel like going to some goodwills around town and see if I can find any neat things like this.

Have you ever used a mechanical keyboard? I feel like maybe not. No meme here boyo.

Thee goodwill by my house always has some awesome deals, its definitely fun to go looking for stuff, I started going looking for vinyls

Aren't they only 2k rollover keyboards though?
Do they have n-key?

They are membrane keyboards so they do have 2kro just like a regular rubber dome. Modifiers don't count towards the limit and there are certain 3+ combinations that work due to the way the matrix is designed. If you've been using a rubber dome keyboard then you will see no difference in usability other then the enhanced tactile feedback.

then why wast money on a model m when any random rubber dome is worth it
even modern membrane keyboards are better, considering they have nkey rollover

model M's were designed to emulate a typewriter so they are very loud, crisp and tactile compared to the mushiness of a rubber dome. Its more of a matter of preference and they last much longer then a traditional rubber dome due to the high quality standards. I've ever seen thick dye-sub PBT keycaps that can compete with the model M. I'm glad my dad still kept his because they are really fun to type on

Lower quality, but you'd only notice if they were side by side. Still blows most cherry, alps, and topre keyboards out of the water.
Keep it and use it OP. It's a great keyboard

not bad senpai, mine cost me fucking £90, because bongland

They feel way better, and very few people press more than two keys at once (remember modifiers like shift, control, and alt don't count towards the 2).
Also most rubber domes are still 2kro even today, unless you buy a gaming or professional keyboard, and that that point, you may as well spend an extra $10 and go mechanical.
I agree that they are sitting on the patent, but the build quality is fine compared to a model M. unfortunately the run about $100 whereas a model M can usualy be found for $40-50.
$50 for a windows key is a lot to ask.

Is 7953 mechanical?

no. It's kinda crappy even for a dome keyboard

Congrats

>tfw my dad bought a computer with a Model M 3 weeks after I was born in 87
>tfw I still use that keyboard to this day

Pic related. It's kinda retarded how emotionally attached I am to this thing.

Best place to pick up a model M?

No. I had one in black with my Aptiva with some media keys. It was alright

>radiator next to the tower

Your old library

I hope this is sophisticated satire.

IBM made shittier (Model M2) and rubber dome versions of the Model M (Quiet Touch)

It's off, retard. Kinda shitty since it's cold af here, but I have enough of them in other locations.

>Model-M is a meme.

Dude.

>using more that one finger for windows menu

Because I use Linux and can easily just re-bind shit that uses the super key (usually I exchange it far LAlt)

You lucky fuck.
I don't understand honestly, CRTs are still sought after yet they're still cheap and readily available. Why aren't old mech keyboards similar in price and easily found when they were just as prominent back in the day?

don't you know how to take a fucking picture you mother fucker

I hate you and hope your shitty man toy brakes in an Armagedon

A keyboard has a lot shorter lifespan. Even a near indestructable brick like the Model M. The only reason they still exist is because they're so durable, and that when they were new computers were so new that people treated them with more care (usually). Still, they're not produced anymore and every day a cup of spilled coffee ends the life of another one.

F

yeah, but playing minecraft on a rubberdome keyboard sucks
