If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or Mac.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

How secure is protonmail? Like to give it a try with a burn account but I made the account on my work internet. Is it already compromised?

Why are gif's so cancerous? Can you ever make them look good without being like 50MB for a 15 second clip?

When will linux get their shit together with vidya gaems? Seriously fuck this shit why do I need to have windows fucking exist on my computer in order to play shitty card games? I just booted into windows and they served me a fucking advertisement for MSoffice in the login screen. An ad! On software I pay for!

does OSx count as linux since its Unix based?

You mean BSD/MacOS

Steam is on Linux. Wine is better than ever. PCI passthrough is a thing.

Mostly I use macOS.

I really hate being spied on by macOS and Windows 10 phone home and telemetrics shit.

But I really don't like how many driver issues and software incompatibilities pop up with Linux.

Is it worth the plunge?

Sound control is pretty bad. PulseAudio main volume slider does nothing.

Microsoft telemarketers are all out tonight

I fucked up and posted in the old thread but.
I updated last night and now my system won't load. Instead I get a message saying recovering journal. Is there a way to repair this without reinstalling my entire OS?

The only way is to be more vague.

what does it mean when I restart my os and It prints "clearing orphaned child"

you didnt shut down properly and its now cleaning orphaned inodes on your drive

Might try LFS again over the weekend
Just need to figure out what the best system of package management would be

Hey look, linux software reviews for normies linux-apps.com/browse/ord/latest/

GNU/Linux*

the year of the desktop is approaching linux-apps.com/p/1130252/

Is there a way to compress each file into a separate .zip file? I got a bunch of .gb ROMs that I want to compress to use with my emulators. WinRAR had a easy way to do it in GUI and I could run FOR %i IN (*.*) DO 7z.exe a "%~ni.zip" "%i" -mx9 on CMD to do the same with 7z, but I have no fucking idea about where to start on Linux. I tried some advice from stackoverflow but I wasn't able to make it work and the man page for zip doesn't specify that usecase.

>incorrect aspect ratio
worst girl being worst

>greates program is a card game

>text editors
>neither vim or emacs are on the list
Site for normies indeed

GNU/Linux*

for i in *; do 7z a "$i.7z" "$i"; done

What's wrong with card games? Stop the hate.

The main website pointing to more websites is here opendesktop.org/

Ricers gonna get crazy.

Thank you, it worked perfectly after I edited it for zip.

I should really learn how the shell works better.

I'm trying to set my monitor up right and I edited the xorg.conf file, my monitor now works, but Ubuntu has no task bar and my cursor is just a cross and I can't do anything. How do I make it fucking work?

>edited the xorg.conf file
>Ubuntu
Something doesn't seem to be adding up here.

New Linux user, new installation. My screen rendering in firefox-dev look crap. Please take a look.

This happens only in Firefox and not Chromium or the DE UI. How do I fix this?

Thanks so much.

What am I doing wrong? Should I use a different flavour of Linux that isn't so fucking useless?

The new res works but Ubuntu just shits the bed and I can't click or type anything, pic related.

theres efi repair

Does anyone know how to restart hdparm on ubuntu without rebooting?

>sudo hdparm restart
>Failed to restart hdparm.service: Unit hdparm.service not found.

what ubuntu flavor? server, mate? was xorg-conf already there before you change it? also paste the lines you added to xorg.conf

>what ubuntu flavor? server, mate?
I have no idea what that means.

I'm just going to try Fedora, fuck this garbage.

How many packages do you have installed on your system?

Also, what's a good music player with KDE integration? Like I can access the Deadbeef controls while it's minimized on XFCE, but not on KDE.

>good music player with KDE integration
for mpd: cantata
Standalone: qmmp

use mpDris2 for mpd direct integration

>fucks up his system
>fuck this garbage.

No, user. You shouldn't need to edit anything from Ubuntu.

Stop laughing at me.

Literally all I need to be able to do for this shit to work is to get my monitor to run at the right refresh rate and I'm golden. Since my Ubuntu install is irretrievably fucked I'm just going to wipe it.

Fedora here I come.

woooooooooooow you can preview the OS from the USB when it's not even installed? That's fucking COOL.

>

Took less than 5 minutes to overclock my monitor on Fedora where I was trying for a week with Ubuntu.

Basically if you're using Ubuntu you should immediately kill yourself.

well then you should go back in time and kill yourself

Why does my printer refuse to work on Puppy Linux? I install it through CUPS but nothing happens when I try to print something.

Is there another distro that I can try that can fit on 1gb ramdisk with printer support?

Fedora can fix your problem

is i3 good or is it a meme?

how does one change terminal font easily?

i'm in mint and want to try i3, how do i switch cinnamon to i3? is there a way to do it without deleting cinnamon?

You can keep both. Install i3 and select it from your login manager.

meme

cmatrix, pipes, hack.exe

trying to install compton for i3
after running compton I get a white flash, and the terminal window ignores any commands. closing the terminal warns of an ongoing process. is this normal? also, how do I make it start on boot? the arch wiki article is a little confusing

Install an out-of-the-box GNU/Linux OS, like Mint. When I first booted, it automatically found the newest nvidia driver, and all other drivers are working just as well.

One thing you have to watch out for is upgrading mint, I upgraded from 17.3 to 18.0 and it broke half of my software because I wasn't being careful enough.

Realised I don't game anymore

Whats a good start linux to dick around in for general use?

Ubuntu, Gentoo, Debian, Antergos, Arch?

>using mint
>recommending mint
wtf?

Get Ubuntu.

I forgot fedora

>Realised I don't game anymore
GNU/Linux has no games is a meme, there are many games out there and even steam has a huge library.

Ubuntu is good for starting

ubuntu is also good for coming back after all the distro hopping

Nah, Cannonical a shit. I'd rather use Debian.

Trying to install Linux Mint off a USB stick. I get to the stage where it asks me what to do (install, install in compatability mode, check the integrity of the medium or whatever it says), but I can't get any further. No matter what I click on there's a split second of terminal lines, my HDD makes a sound like its writing, then the screen just goes black forever.

I tried changing the boot option between UEFI and USB in my BIOS but it didn't make any difference. What do?

>mint
found your problem
install ubuntu
