If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following: 0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine. 1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything. 2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or Mac. 3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Steam is on Linux. Wine is better than ever. PCI passthrough is a thing.

Mostly I use macOS.
I really hate being spied on by macOS and Windows 10 phone home and telemetrics shit.
But I really don't like how many driver issues and software incompatibilities pop up with Linux.
Is it worth the plunge?

I don't have any anime or manga I want to discuss though
Is there a way to compress each file into a separate .zip file? I got a bunch of .gb ROMs that I want to compress to use with my emulators. WinRAR had a easy way to do it in GUI and I could run FOR %i IN (*.*) DO 7z.exe a "%~ni.zip" "%i" -mx9 on CMD to do the same with 7z, but I have no fucking idea about where to start on Linux. I tried some advice from stackoverflow but I wasn't able to make it work and the man page for zip doesn't specify that usecase.

I'm trying to set my monitor up right and I edited the xorg.conf file, my monitor now works, but Ubuntu has no task bar and my cursor is just a cross and I can't do anything. How do I make it fucking work?

New Linux user, new installation. My screen rendering in firefox-dev look crap. Please take a look.
This happens only in Firefox and not Chromium or the DE UI. How do I fix this?
Thanks so much.

What am I doing wrong? Should I use a different flavour of Linux that isn't so fucking useless?

How many packages do you have installed on your system?
Also, what's a good music player with KDE integration? Like I can access the Deadbeef controls while it's minimized on XFCE, but not on KDE.

Literally all I need to be able to do for this shit to work is to get my monitor to run at the right refresh rate and I'm golden. Since my Ubuntu install is irretrievably fucked I'm just going to wipe it.
Fedora here I come.
Nathaniel Campbell
woooooooooooow you can preview the OS from the USB when it's not even installed? That's fucking COOL.

Took less than 5 minutes to overclock my monitor on Fedora where I was trying for a week with Ubuntu.
Basically if you're using Ubuntu you should immediately kill yourself.
Ryder Bell
well then you should go back in time and kill yourself

Why does my printer refuse to work on Puppy Linux? I install it through CUPS but nothing happens when I try to print something.

trying to install compton for i3 after running compton I get a white flash, and the terminal window ignores any commands. closing the terminal warns of an ongoing process. is this normal? also, how do I make it start on boot? the arch wiki article is a little confusing
Luke Rodriguez
Install an out-of-the-box GNU/Linux OS, like Mint. When I first booted, it automatically found the newest nvidia driver, and all other drivers are working just as well.
One thing you have to watch out for is upgrading mint, I upgraded from 17.3 to 18.0 and it broke half of my software because I wasn't being careful enough.

Realised I don't game anymore
Whats a good start linux to dick around in for general use?

>Realised I don't game anymore GNU/Linux has no games is a meme, there are many games out there and even steam has a huge library.
Ubuntu is good for starting

ubuntu is also good for coming back after all the distro hopping

Nah, Cannonical a shit. I'd rather use Debian.

Trying to install Linux Mint off a USB stick. I get to the stage where it asks me what to do (install, install in compatability mode, check the integrity of the medium or whatever it says), but I can't get any further. No matter what I click on there's a split second of terminal lines, my HDD makes a sound like its writing, then the screen just goes black forever.
I tried changing the boot option between UEFI and USB in my BIOS but it didn't make any difference. What do?
