what do you guys need that many HD space for? I have 500GB and only use about 100GB. Is it for games? I delete movies once I watch them, have a good music library that still doesn't takes that much and that's it. Why do some of you need +1TB?

Because we're not illiterate retards.

>I delete
The Adeptus Mechanicus never deletes.

so having a lot of trash in your HD equals being a tech expert?

I really like this "My use case differs from your use case hence I have to question your use case" mentality.

Visual Studio

I have a lot of trash that are unmanaged.

But besides that I have software for everything you can do on a computer:
- Music Creation [LMMS]
- 2D Art [SAI, Clip Studio Paint, Krita]
- Adobe Suite [All of them]
- Animation [Anime Studio Debut, SFM]
- 3D Modelling [Blender, Maya, Scultris, Makehuman]
- Programming [VS, Xamarin, Android Studio, Eclipse, Atom]
- Game Dev [Unreal, Unity, Gamemaker, Stencyl, Aptana]
- Communication [Skype, Discord]
- Game [Steam, Origin, Uplay]

I just realised how much shit I have after typing all those out. That's not even all.

I keep movies. Because why not. I keep installers for a lot of software and games. I don't like relying on internet. All that is on my external HDD. Tbh I don't even use 200GB on my main 1TB drive or my second 500GB drive. I'll probably buy an SSD for my main OS and keep one of the drives for further archiving.

Why do you have 5 seperate game developing programs?

Some of us do things with our pcs , like render video or make music , and not just watch movies.

IDEs and other prerequisite/additional packages for developing can start to take up a lot of space (on windows at least). And theres also games like titanfall which take up 30-50GB alone. Movie rips also start to add up.

I archive media because who knows what the future of file sharing will be like and storage is super cheap.

>this fucking thread

Go fuck yourself OP.

Sup Forums doesn't have enough shitpoasterz on it right now ... go over there and waste pixels with those faggots.

>le I roleplay a tech leonardo davinci for no good reason

Lol my music library is more than 100gb. I actually don't know why I have that much space being eaten up.

i have a lot of HDD space because i got one of the drives (1tb WD green) for like 8 bucks and from laptop drives (1 500gb, 1 320gb, 1 250gb). i also have a 240gb SSD. it's a lot, and i don't need all of them, but it's good to be prepared!

I have a 1tb SSD and a 2tb green drive. I keep some of my game ISOs and I always have 50-100gb of movies/TV shows/anime on my drive. I also have 10gb of music and that's it.

My SSD has 700gb of free space and my green drive has over 1tb.

Steam basically eat up my 1tb HD. Fucking 25gb+ games left and right these days. I kinda miss when the average game size was like 8gb.

>my needs are different than yours
>are you retarded?
no, I just do a lot of things

>inb4 storing your backups on the same computer as your data
they're offsite copies for senpai, my backups are elsewhere.

1/10 for getting a reply

For all my Cheese Pizza

Neat

dumb frogposter

>I delete movies once I watch them
What if you want to watch them again?

I'm using 16 of 22 TiB mostly for DVD/BD rips on my file server.

Games take up a lot of space too, both my 250 GB SSD and 500 GB HDD are 80% full, mostly due to games. I plan to get a 1 TB Samsung 960 EVO (NVMe/PCIe) when I eventually get a new motherboard (probably Ryzen).

rainbow tables,wordlists...to name a couple.

High-resolution FLACs

I have 1.5TB and i'm deleting next to nothing anymore... When i hit the limit i'll buy another 1TB external drive... etc.

DOOM is close to 70 GB. And skyrim with mods can exceed that.

Games, movies, series, music recording and editing.

I have 400gbs in tv shows, 250gb in movies, 150gb in porn, 30gb in music, and 500gn in video games.

I tend to rewatch shows/movies so I rarely delete them.

OP
you delete movies after you watch them, and you can't see how people use more than 1TB of HDD space?

If you don't delete them they accumulate. you would eventually fill up 1TB if you kept downloading movies and not deleting them.

people buy these drives so they can have media stored on them. not so they can temporarily queue media until they watch them and promptly delete them like you do OP

what a stupid fucking question. its not just movies either. some games take up 50+ GB, I use audio VST's that can take up 50+ GB each. My music production drive alone is more than 600 GB and that doesn't even include project files.

If you download a file of 50GB you're definitely retarded.

Data is not "trash". You never know when you'll dig up some old niche hardware only to find the manufacturer's website is down and copies of the associated software are impossible to find because people like you think it's "worthless".

>implying there exists a more efficient way of transferring that much information

how would you suggest transferring a 50GB file to a computer on the other side of the planet?

It's not called the Bill of Needs, faggot.

Yeah it sucks. Take Just Cause 2 (2010) for example, a nice looking game with a massive map and it's only 5gb.

If the game was released today, it would look marginally better with a smaller map and it'd be 50gb.

Not counting things that can be easily replaced like games, movies, and music I probably only have about 50gb of useful data I don't want to lose. But with those things I have like 3 terabytes of data.

A backlog of bout 250GB of animu and movies.
About 350GB of music.
About 100GB of other files and 4chin shit.
About 200GB of gaymes.

I just dont understand it.
So all the sounds, 320k mp3, that's maybe 4-500mB
All the textures, maybe 750mB
Polygon structure file for the map, like 500mB
Storyline logic, like 100mB
Animations and video scenes, like 3gB
Multi-player server and shit, like 500mB

I mean what the fuck else is there? Why are modern games so big?

I have a bunch of porn site rips , genre packs of movies, comic book packs , and book backs from all the private trackers I'm a part of. I don't usually keep most of it but it adds up overtime.

For this!

I download them again. Normally I wouldn't want to watch a movie again withing 2 years of seeing it for the first time
I miss when the average game size was like 100-600MB. Back when they were good
do people re-watch movies constantly? this is new to me, the only movies I'd watch multiple times are just a handful
>mp3
lol they use uncompressed audio all the time, that's for multiple channels and all that shit. They bloat the size to prevent piracy (which is stoopid because pirates normally make lightweight rips that cuts several gigs in size while steamcucks have to download everything)

Porn.

>lol they use uncompressed audio all the time

It's requires far less processing power/resources for playback when compared to compressed audio. It's also pretty fucking lossless compared to using mp3's.

You may not think real time playback of an mp3 is CPU heavy, but when 30 separate sound effect files need to be played at the same time it makes a dent.

better to have too much than too little

iso files

i have single tv shows over 100G

>>do people re-watch movies constantly? this is new to me, the only movies I'd watch multiple times are just a handful
There's a lot of media that I was to go back to. And few things irritate me more than wanting to go watch or listen to something and being unable to get it because it's been DMCAd, or the torrent died, or streaming service such-and-such no longer has it because of a licensing dispute, or what have you.

>So all the sounds, 320k mp3, that's maybe 4-500mB

Depends on the game, but most games have music, long ambiance tracks, dialogue, and FX. And due to licencing and a need to reduce decode overhead, game audio isn't encoded to mp3. You can add a zero to your sound estimate, so let's say 4-5 GB.

>All the textures, maybe 750mB
You're way off. We're not using 128x128 TGAs any more. Modern games have multiple materials for every asset. So you want to have a rock in your game? Then you need a color texture for it (albedo map). Do you want the albedo map to actually wrap around the model correctly? Then you need a UV map. Do you want it to have details? Then you need a normal map for it. Do you want it to react to light correctly? Then you need a specular map. Do you want it to cast self shadows? Then you need an AO map. But wait, there is more. Modern games use level of detail, so the engine swaps out models and textures based on how far away an object is. So you need 3-5 versions of the same mesh and textures, for every god damn asset. And this is just scratching the surface, the hot topic these days are physically based materials (PBR), where the file sizes ends up just as big or even bigger.

Textures these days takes up double digit gigabytes.

>Polygon structure file for the map, like 500mB
The polygon budget for modern games are hundreds of thousands of polygons. Although meshes are fairly modest in size even at high resolution, today's high poly assets combined with LODs puts the total size pretty high, probably talking several GBs.

>Storyline logic, like 100mB
Probably, but modern engines use a lot of stacks and libraries etc, so you have to account for everything that's needed for it to run. A few GBs.

>Animations and video scenes, like 3gB
Most modern games today use mocap for animation, which can add up. But you're probably not that far off, I'd say a few GBs as well.

>I mean what the fuck else is there?
A lot of dirty tricks and laziness.

> implying I ever delete anything ever

My entire life has been migrated from one computer to the next. I have know idea what treasures are on my hard drive.

I just have to dig deep enough.

games lmao
Doom 2016 is like 60+GB. I have a 2TB 2.5" HDD and it was nearly at capacity before I reinstalled Wingdangs. I just have a bad habit of installing games I never play and never getting around to uninstalling them.

Also like 200GB+ of porn.

You also have shit taste

> Why do you have 5 seperate game developing programs?
Not him, but likely because they can do different things. What you can do in Unity, you can't necessarily do in GameMaker. Depends on the type of game you want to make?

I record streams, currently 1.5TB of recordings
Looking to get a 6TB NAS to store/share them

nobody cares about your retarded lifestyle choices and nobody will mourn your death

I use around 300 - 350GB

>Windows alone is like 30-40GB, probably like 50GB with all the redistibutables, and other crap
>I have a 10GB music library
>Visual Studio + bunch of plugins = another 10+GB
>Other random programming shit (IDEs, compilers, libraries, DLLs and object files) = another 10GB
>Random programs (itunes, MS Office, foobar, blender, maya, 3DS, virtual box, virtual machines = 50+GB
>Files for school = 5+GB
>Lectures saved from school = 20+GB
>Random images, videos, movies, pdfs, books, etc. another 50+GB
>About 10 games installed = 150+GB

When all you do with your computer is browse the web youre obviously not gonna use a lot of space.

I dont bother to keep TV Series or Movies. I am sure someone will be always seeding those for eternity.

BUT MUSIC !!! I have been a proud member of soulseek rutracker and whatcd and some of the high resolution audio rips on there are priceless.

The complete works of Dead can dan Dance on DSD256 ? Rare Tangerine Dream Records ripped from a Michel Gyrodeck and megabuck phonostage @ 24/192 PCM. Thats like 3 - 6gb per album.

I have 2Tb of FLAC and DSD. Its so rare and precious i mirror it and keep a drive offline. So i am already up to 4Tb and thats non including my lossy music collected over 20 years or my dank meme farm.

I have about 1200-ish ghost images for various 3d models stores on my desktop, and a backup, the files are between 15 and 40gb a piece
So its two 5tb hdd's that are getting kinda full, because alongside them are programs for the machines these parts are made on, lots of paperwork, lots of other customer display models and shit

And thats just my work stuff
My personal stuff, music, videos, porn, other misc files takes up another 4tb hdd

But then, it really is your personal requirements and uses
My sisters computer only has a single 120gb ssd, and shes still not even used 20gb

Porn, nigga! A lot of HD porn...

>I dont bother to keep
If you dl a 44Gb blu-ray, you'll likely keep it.

Can someone ban the hash for this retarded image, and the people posting it? It's like every faggot on Sup Forums wants to make a thread with it.

I need 2 external 2TB drives for my JAV alone

>is it for games?

yea
