Full disclosure thread

Is anyone not getting the dual monitor meme? I mean, I do use 2 monitor in both my setups I keep finding the one main monitor to be the one I need. Sure I may run a video on the second or maybe something that really has to be on the background very rarely but I really don't get the meme that I should require something that I constantly have to turn my head and look it.

Maybe people stand way too far from their monitor or something? Or their monitor is small? I don't get why it's so amazing to not use mainly one good and big monitor.

hey look at me i have dual monitor
i am pro
i am a top tier developer

My second monitor is used to fit more porn on the screen when I'm fapping. That's about 90% of its usage.(This is very important to me)

The other 10% is when I want to watch a documentary on the side while programming. For the most part minimizing programs on my main is just too ingrained in me. I also subconsciously feel having my second monitor on just sky rockets my electric bill, when really it's negligible.

Still, having the option to 'just turn on my second' feels so much better than being hard limited to one.

most two monitor setups happen when someone upgrades their current monitor

its better than putting it in an attic/garage and forgetting a perfectly good monitor

also if you have the desk space it only makes life easier

I fell for the triple monitor meme, but I use PLP instead of 3 16:9 which I just dont understand.

I still use my main 27" display for all of my productivity, but the portrait mode 5:4 monitors on the side will have my IRCs, any communications programs I'm using, and it's very convenient for having "utilities" on those side monitors. I would consider swapping one of them out for another 16:9, but I don't like trying to allocate my attention between 2 things, such as a movie, and a research paper.

>papers
one monitor for research the other for the paper
>dev
one for text editor the other for looking up problems
>graphic shit
one for looking up possible reference images/ ideas the other for photoshop.

There are lots of uses or it senpai.

devving, 2nd screen is linux VM with text editor/file manager/terminal + communications/media visible at all times.

main screen for the occasional gaymen, *chans and reading documentation/surfing on da web.

2nd monitor is useful in many scenarios.

most of all for running my home PC and work laptop simultaneously

so i can feel more productive but in reality im a sperg and cant focus on more than 1 thing for the most part.

I shitpost on one monitor, and watch Terry on the other.

I actually use my dual monitors so much. Workspace on the main. Browser + tools on the secondary. Its better than having to alt tab constantly. I think it helped improve my workflow because I could always look at my code while either compiling or searching for something.

The more monitors you have,
the better you are at computing

desu 3 monitors are way better than 2.
With 2 monitors I always feel there is a gap in the center

Cause it's fuckin sexy
Never stop watching videos on the top monitor because of have the attention of a tea spoon

I have two monitors, one large and central, the other smaller and to the side. Having an extra monitor saves a shit ton of alt tabs when doing anything across two windows

this. I don't have 2 monitors but if I upgrade mine I will keep the old one for sure, selling used monitors is never worth it even if in good state

>portrait mode 5:4

I feel like a lot of the convenience that people talk about *requires* to have the second monitor to also be high quality. I have a shitty second and it doesn't feel that great to use it for anything. Similarly I have a laptop with an external monitor and I don't feel using the laptop's screen as a second either.

I learn a lot of shit online, and it's helpful to have one screen for learning materials, like video or documentation, and another for actually carrying out the work.

kind of wanted a second monitor but gnu/linux workspaces already help a lot because you don't need to be minimizing/maximizing shit all the time, just adjust them and switch between workspaces

I started using two monitors because of this, then my older (really old), then-secondary monitor died. I tried just dealing with having just one monitor for a couple weeks, but having been used to multiple, I couldn't stand it. Now my mediocre 1080p monitor is a secondary, and I got a pretty good IPS 1200p (U2412m) as my new primary, it feels great.
I'd post a new picture of my desk now, but I haven't taken one yet, I've only had the new monitor a few days. Here's an older pic with the secondary still alive.

Multiple monitors are a symptom of bad window management skills and/or tools.
Note how it's usually Microsoft Windows users who """need""" more than 1 monitor, because their OS has shit window management, which is kind of ironic, considering its name.

i like your bst a lot user.

I keep my music player on the other monitor

Thank you, user :3
it's a mess at the moment though. I have to clean up my desk and manage the cables for the new monitor this week, currently I'm leaving them just dangling behind the desk like some normie

I have dual monitors at home, and quad at work.

Home use its pretty neat. Most of my day is filled with having two browser windows open, one on each side. The left is my main monitor, that's where I shit post from, and where I keep most of my internet use to. Second monitor keeps my music player open, Facebook, some other less often checked website, email client, etc.
I game on one monitor, and then move my browsing to the second so I can shitpost between matches, or breaks without having to alt-tab out.

At work I work with AD and exchange servers that require me to stay logged in all day, email client, remove desktop client for end user, general browsing, and anything else. I have the 4 monitors set to that so that I dont have to move apps around. I work much faster this way, its great.

Pic related is when I only had 2 monitors at work, had to have all my VMs, and remove session stacked on top of one another. Now I can keep them all on one monitor side by side.

It's definitely not a meme.

You could say I'm a developer (I'm really not by Sup Forums standards, just a test automation >"engineer"). As someone who constantly have two browsers with shitton of tabs including BrowserStack, IDE, terminal, Slack, Skype, VM and whatnot opened, I can't imagine my work without a second monitor.
>turn my head
Look at your pic again. Is that kind of a turn really a problem? Are you disabled?
>one good and big monitor
Maybe having a 27 inch 4K monitor would be nice, but I doubt my company is going to upgrade to those just cause, while giving a second 1080p monitor to people who require it isn't such a big deal.

In any case, actual screen real estate is better than workspaces (virtual desktops), and it so very useful.

I have two 24" 1920x1200 monitors, one in landscape orientation and the other in portrait. The portrait I use constantly for reading just about anything you can imagine (PDF, text, word processing, etc.), and is my primary web browsing monitor.

The landscape monitor collects all the debris I use to manage everything that's running. So, spreadsheets, music player & open folders to view/select/manage files, play movies/media, graphics editing and photo management, web page development, etc.

I feel pretty crippled without both monitors because I've been using two monitors like this for most of a decade now. Previously I had a 23" 1920x1080 in landscape paired with a 19" 1024 x 1280 in portrait.

Once you develop efficient work habits to exploit the advantages of each orientation, that combo becomes incredibly productive.

For a while I used a 2560x1440 as the landscape paired with the 1200x1920 portrait. Loved the extra real estate, especially for spreadsheets, plus a glorious crisp movie experience. I moved that monitor to a different system as the single monitor for my wife and as a general movie-playing system in a "chill room" isolated from the rest of the house so you can get away from other general noise & distractions.

I miss that. Hoping to get another one this summer, or maybe even drop the extra $$$s to go up to a 30", possibly even 2560x1600. In which case, I'll probably just add it to my main current workstation as a primary landscape and keep the other two for a total of three. Given the amount of graphics work I do, it'll be pretty easy for me to have all three monitors cluttered up with applications, images and various management tasks.

tl;dr -- not a meme, if you're actually using your system for productivity.

Single 4:3 monitor or bust. If you need that much screen real estate you're doing something wrong.

OP here. I used a WPF window on the left shitty window and XAML code on the right proper monitor. It's pretty cool actually for that job, mainly because the design of windows is only used as a reference minimally.

Mostly use it when I'm working:

One has email almost permanently item, other times it's whatever reference material I need it or the debug port output.

I don't know why home users would require it, other than I occasionally use mine to have football on while playing Hoi4 or something

I couldn't possibly go back to use Photoshop and Illustrator with only one monitor.
Before I had a second one, I was always annoyed at having not enough screen space for various tool menus, and once I set it up, everything worked so much better.
Heck, I would consider using a third screen just for having models/templates/guidelines to look at while I'm working.

Lightroom, I never felt the need for a second one, although I could try moving the library over there; And occasionally I watch a video on the second screen, but it wouldn't be worth getting a second screen just for that.

Keyboard model?

Once I added a second monitor, it was so useful and convenient that I kept adding more. I'd never want to go back.

>2x wallpaper
>1x anime
very useful

> I convinced myself I don't have at least 3-4 more too many just for showing off

You don't need an OS. Run only MS-DOG. No Deskdog needed.

I have severe add so I need to be looking at another website at all times while I play my games or watch my animes in case there are any boring parts

If you don't understand why you don't need a second monitor, then you don't need a second monitor. Same applies the other way around. It's as simple as that.

In my case, I use a dual monitor setup in both development and gaming.

For the former, it's useful being able to use my IDE or work in x tool on one monitor and referencing relevant information/imagery on the other without having to constantly flip back and forth between windows, while also not having to constrain the size of either window.

For the latter, having useful information available at a glance without having to tab out of game is a nice option.

>tldr: It's up to the individual. It's not necessary but it does have legitimate uses.

Second monitor is for web browser and notes I need to keep while fullscreening other apps. Could do without it, but at times it comes in handy.
