Could you torrent at a college library safely if you used ethernet and a VPN? What about a public library?

Could you torrent at a college library safely if you used ethernet and a VPN? What about a public library?

almost all of them run blocking software (so ppl don't browse porn etc) and that also blocks most torrents.

What kind of college blocks pron

topkek what kind of college doesn't?

Kid, you have to be over 18 to use this site. go back to Club Penguin.

Sure, but let's say they don't as the college I am referring to does not.

>Could you torrent at a college library safely if you used ethernet and a VPN? What about a public library?
At my university you had to log in through your username to access wi-fi. They monitered the activity. A my room mate freshma year torrented two movies the first month and got his internet turned off till he went to beg to have it turned on. IRC worked for me fine on campus all through college.

Public Library never personally done it. \

>log in through your username to access wi-fi
Unless they're breaking HTTPS this shouldn't be an issue if you have a VPN. And they wouldn't want to break that because credit cards could be stolen.

Same here but ethernet doesn't require log in which is why I specified it. Also did he get a DMCA notice that told the school or was he caught pretty much immediately?

club penguin is closing tho

Just about any ethernet or wifi adapter will have a traceable mac address that can be linked to your computer.

A VPN will get you out of the eyes of the casual FBI monitoring. Keep in mind that any college internet line will be gov't tapped since it is required by law.

Just walk down the street to Starbucks, that's what I did in college.

If torrents aren't explicitly blocked couldn't you use a live USB on a library desktop? Also assuming they don't have a locked bios kind of deal.

Only on the desktop so they can focus on mobile

You torreneted using Starbucks internet? Wifi or ethernet? VPN?
locked bios kind of deal

I download stuff on my computer at home and use sftp to transfer it onto my laptop at college. All web traffic is tunneled through hardened ssh.

If they care enough to force students to log into wi-fi with RADIUS then they're probably inspecting SSL as well.

Most SSL inspection can be selectively turned off for financial/online payment sites, though.

I torrented shit and browsed sadpanda all day on uni connections for four years, it varies from place to place.

That would instantly raise red flags on every modern browser. Unless you used their botnet setup software that installs their MITM certificate your browser will alert you to such attacks.

Do your unis really block porn? Do you go to BYU or something?

>Unless you used their botnet setup software that installs their MITM certificate your browser will alert you to such attacks

I worked at my Uni's IT department when I was in school. Your device got put into a blackhole VLAN until you installed their cert (and passed a shitload of other posture checks).

my uni only blocks japanese porn

Almost all public computers are going to have a bios lock.

And if they don't, then I seriously doubt they have the know how to stop you from torrenting with just a VPN.

...

>Almost all public computers are going to have a bios lock.
>my community college didn't
also the library computers locked you out of using cmd but not powershell
good times

mine didnt, i torrented a textbook while in class

most universities do, but if they have a guest account you might be able to do it rather anonymously

now then it depends on how Much you're downloading and how Often

if you torrent a thing or two, a few gig here and there its probably not gonna be a thing

but the actual reason they track login stuff is in case you're torrenting like crazy (which is, like most, and not hit/run like me)

and/or if you're a Hacor, because they gotta try to track that stuff

additionally even if you're on an anonymous connection they can probably trace back to which wifi router was being used - and then check the cameras

> mfw I will actually sit in places where the cameras dont have a clear view of, especially of my screen, just so that the college security cant casually peek with the cam and notice ive got porn on my screen

> which goes double for also picking places that aren't easy for someone to just walk by, because im in a corner or booth or some other place they'd actually have to look around the screen to notice something

> im oldskool stealth, checking line of sight/line of fire and all that

dumbass thats why you change your MAC occasionally

I change mine every day, ive got a program for it

> actually using college terminals for any reason other than loading a document off a flash so that you can send it to the local printer network
> ultimate disdain for pleb

Oh another thing if its blocked at McDonalds...

Look up the torrents you want to try somewhere that you can access the sites.

But go download the actual data at the restaurant wifi. Almost none of them (I repeat None) will block the P2P traffic, they'll block you from reaching a torrent site but if you've already got the torrent.

Speed may be crap, but you can get something potentially... filthy... in this way if you dont wanna get it through your regular accounts somewhere (or home).

> ultimate disdain for pleb
I couldn't afford a laptop at the time so I would load up a thumbdrive with gcc, gdb, and notepad++ and program for hours in the library. I also, incidentally, learned some powershell on the way
