Okay, please tell me

Okay, please tell me
What the fuck is so great about Linux?

its whatever you want it to be... it really can be

Except run software that matters.

it just seems like everyone on this board is constantly trying to justify downloading it
seems like its good for a few specific things and really shitty at many things

It costs nothing, it's easy to use if you have an IQ over 60, and it doesn't watch you fap. Respects your freedumbs out of the box, unlike wangblows that requires you to run questionable tools made by chinks. You also have fat neckbeards as tech support, which is a huge step up from street shitters.

I've been using it for nearly 10 years as a desktop OS. I now use windows 10. Let me tell you something, the OS is fucking great, but it doesn't have any software people need.

In majority at least. Sure if you only need a spergstation for Sup Forums it's enough.

Here, I'll list a few easily google-able reasons:

1. I can run my own web server for not only free, but easily, using community-supported guides and code, tweaked to my liking. I can do anything from a Mail server to Nextcloud to just running a remote torrent client. How about that?

2. I have the added security of knowing that free, open source programs won't install horrible shit on my computer that I don't want, rather than just doing what they're designed to do by the basement dwelling faggot that wrote them. How about that?

3. I can tailor my desktop experience not only by the weight of the demands of my system, but also aesthetically and functionally. How about that?

4. Go fuck youself. How about that?

>waa spoonfeed me, i'm an incompetent nu-male who can't make his own mind.

As a user operating system it is not a good use of your time to learn it.

As a server operating system, it is absolutely fucking mandatory if your server is web facing or extremely large-scale. Running Windows for that purpose is both prohibitively expensive and unnecessarily risky.

If you want to make a metric fuckton of money administering servers like that, it is worth learning to use Linux as your personal OS.

dont like how something works? rewrite it.

bet you can't do that on windows, microdick.

distributions are made 100% with the user in mind

they don't try to gank all of your data and use your internet connection to mine buttcoins and seed cuck porn in the middle of the night like Microcuck Wangblows does

It's more unixlike than Windows, but not as unixlike as OpenBSD.

>its whatever you want it to be... it really can be
c-can it be my ai gf?

>sell me on Linux

No.

Try it out and if you like it, then use it.

If you don't like it, then go back to whatever you prefer.

1. Installing via packages is way easier and more convenient than individual installers for everything.

2. Don't have to reboot when updating software.

3. If something breaks or isn't working, you can fix it and get things running again. In Windows you often have to reboot.

Control.

It's great when you don't have a job or don't go to school and you need something to do. it gives you a sense of accomplishment when you spend few hours trying to fix something that broke for no reason whatsoever.

>fat neckbeards as tech support
kek

Speed
Efficiency
Flexibility
Control

With Linux you can have an operating system that does exactly what you want it to do and nothing else.

And it's free.

Your pic is Arch critical, not Linux critical.

If you don't know by now, in light of everything that has happened with W10, and how Apple treats their customers, then Linux probably isn't for you.

I think the biggest strength is freedom to do what you want and to not have your data sold.

Secondarily, but very importantly, there are very usable linux-based operating systems and linux native applications for the vast majority of common tasks one might want to do with a computer.

it applies to all of the distros. you'll find something that broke and then your next 2hrs are gone.

Nothing

>thinks things don't break in other operating systems.
I run Ubuntu and things break very seldom.

Classic Microsoft propaganda.
Ironically, most NEETs in the world use Windows while almost all Linux installs belong to professional environment such as web servers, system admins, super computers, main frames, space stations etc.

>he's comparing upgrades to shit breaking

Wow, you are trying so hard there

I find with Linux, if things break it's at the beginning. Once you fix them, it's pretty smooth sailing on a stable distro.

With Windows, everything works at the start, then a year or two later (it's become worse with W10) things start to break. Only in that case, you have to reinstall the whole fucking thing.

You get to tell people you use Linux.

I use Linux on my main desktop workstation. I used to use Windows, but Windows has been shit for a long time.

Linux is free, and I can control how it behaves, when it updates, etcetera. Hell, I can control everything about it. And since I don't play PC games and everything I do for work can be done in a browser, Linux is perfect for me.

...

the only time a linux program has ever crashed is when I'm running video games in Wine

it takes fucking windows to break Linux

>trying hard
I'm not the one comparing upgrades that add functionality to actually trying to fix broken shit. You got triggered, son.

Is Slackware a Timesink OS?

This is what it's like to have so little social life that you have countless hours of free time with nothing useful to do

sure, issue:
# emerge gf
# apt-get install gf
# pacman -S gf

Arch is almost a hobby distro, where you install it because you expect shit to go wrong and you enjoy fixing it. The common Linux distros like Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, Fedora, etc are pretty functional

Only the kernel. The rest is a pure shit!

You do realize some extremely butthurt windows fanboy got insecure and wrote all that, do you?

Just look at the amount of strawman, I wonder why windows promoters get so insecure like that

poorfags who cant afford windows

Windows 10 comes pre installed, idiot

it's ok if you can't afford Windows, but that doesn't make it actually free since you have to spend all your time fixing things and time is money

Windows just doesn't work

>pre-built PC
This is what Sup Forums has become.

True current Sup Forums is pathetic

Linux is a meme.

It's still lacking a lot of support before I can fully switch
MacOS has the support I need but a lot more annoying as an OS and I don't want to support apple

>implying compatibility fixing is worth anyone's time
Suck my cock

>long time winfag
>muh vidya!
>switch to ubuntu on laptop
>literally just works
>rarely need to restart computer... uptimes of 7+ days
>didn't turn off laptop for 2 months at one point
>sudo apt-get update/upgrade every now and then
>addiction to vidya ends
>start reading, lifting
>got a gf
>finally went back to school
>increased productivity of ubuntu and lack of gaming = highest grades I've ever gotten in school
>now making 75k/year

Are you legitimately implying windows or any OS is free of compatibility issues?

easy to use, fast, free, easy to fix/maintain/update, package manager makes it easy to add and remove software cleanly, lots of choices as far and look and feel go, etc

basically, it's more comfortable

it's not for everyone though, you get the most out of it if you're willing to learn about how it all works

Nothing.
The code is shit. Community is shit. Ideas behind it are shit, balkanized as shit.

The vast majority of the internet uses linux. Facebook, Google, Amazon, all pretty much linux.

So if you want a job at these companies learn linux.

You have total control over your computer.
