Who the fuck owns this shit?

Looking online they dodged a question regarding how they stay in business...is this Tencent attempting to establish itself in the west?

>is this Tencent attempting to establish itself in the west?

They already did that with League of Legends back in 2010. Also, they just recently monetized it by adding in a premium subscription service that gives some pointless extra features, so my guess is that they were operating at a loss long enough to build market share, then cashing in. Also the creators previously made some mobile game, so I'm guessing they had at least some capital to work with, not to mention all the user data they sell.

>how they stay in business.
By requiring access to your facebook account when you install the app on android

wasn't this same scum behind "openfeint" too?

an absolutely beyond shifty organization with multi million dollar funding for an app that could have been made by a ragtagteam of basement coders

you are the product

r4p3.net/threads/what-is-discord.861/

Does lying feel good?

no

What? Just check the app permissions

How do they require access to my Facebook account when I don't have Facebook installed on my phone? Retard

>he doesn't have facebook
retard

>willingly installs botnet/ battery draining app on phone
>calls other people retard

>how does one of the fastest growing chat services in the world stay in business

You dumbfucks realize that Discord is relatively small right?!

Where were the threads when Snapchat had 25 million users?!

Snap Inc. still doesnt make money in a confident manner and they are at a risk of going bankrupt if it all goes wrong and growth isnt as high as expected

Discord is one of the best Start Ups in CA and people will throw more funding at it when needed

Why?! Because its a great product which attracts many users.

There is literally no need for them to turn a profit in the next 2-3 years and they say so themselves - they simply dont have to care and just want to fuck over fucking awful skype and take market share thats currently spread out over to TS, Ventrilo and all that shit 'Gamers' use.

Its similiar to FB ... FB was for Harvard first then for colleges .. then they opened up to everyone.

Many people use Discord already for non related stuff and its simply going to become a nother form of social network which has a different use case than FB etc.

Whats the problem with it?! They can fund themselves with ads for all i care -- in the end its nothing but a chrome build (press the shortcut for dev console in it lol)

Idk what you people think but all of this must get hosted, paid for somehow ...

>Many people use Discord already for non related stuff and its simply going to become another form of social network

This right here. Loads of general threads on Sup Forums have dedicated discord servers for non-vidya stuff, plus the recent changes seem geared more towards sharing porn.

Why do you continue lying when people already disproved you?

>find accounts on the device

stupid phoneposters when will they learn

doesn't Sup Forums have a discord channel? I'm pretty sure there is a linux circlejerk discord somewhere here.

>
>>find accounts on the device
>stupid phoneposters when will they learn

I don't know what you are trying to say.. Discord doesn't appear in settings -> accounts

>Discord
wrong board, buddy

go back to

>“Find accounts on the device” lets the app check with Android’s built in Account Manager on whether you have any accounts on services such as Google, Facebook and so on.

neato

>many of the advertisements on Sup Forums use a service trying to advertise in order to get a bigger market share
you dont say?

It connects to Facebook no matter if you have it installed or not. Preventing it from connecting to the Facebook domains (either by using xprivacy, firewall, or hosts file) causes the app to crash. So yeah, they work very closely with Facebook.

and what if i dont even have afacebook account or facebook on my phone

So fucking stupid

>graph.facebook.com

You idiot... It makes use of GraphQL which is a API Query language developed by Facebook. Since Discord is built with JS and uses React for its UI (React was also developed by Facebook) it makes perfect sense.

graphql.org/
facebook.github.io/react/

Also while not a particularly big fan of React, GraphQL looks rather sweet.

I don't see facebook anywhere user, whats your point?
Seems like you agree with me but still calls me stupid.

This is a great post, atleast this user tries to prove his point, even if it is based on a misunderstanding
See

get those alternative facts outta here.

>worries about his data
>has the facebook app installed
Your nudes are already being sold to every advertiser in the world kid, might as well just enjoy your fucking apps

>>has the facebook app installed
the app contacts facebook directly, as you can see from his screenshot

> denies the direct evidence ITT

>He has Discord on his phone
Yeah I'm moving goalposts, but is there really a reason to have it on your phone of all places?

There was no facebook app installed during this test here . I'm not sure if it connects to anything else, it would require a rooted phone to check.

I don't see why not. You can talk with your friends while on the go or in bed if you don't have a laptop.

Whatsapp exists.

This program is great IME.

FB messenger exists

suicide exists if you swear by those.

No wonder you don't care if your info gets stolen.
Fucking burgers

Do you know how hard it can be to get your friends to try out different programs, and how much harder it is to actually get them to fully switch to it? I'm surprised half the fuckers I know actually moved to Discord rather than sticking with Skype because "it just works".

I actually do know, yes.
But I choose my personal info being secure anytime over talking with friends.

Most people I (and you) know already use Whatsapp.
Nobody uses Discord, but then again I'm not in middle school anymore, so...

I believe that's only mostly true for Europe (not sure about Asia/Oceania/South America). Whatsapp usage is pretty low in North America since most of them just stick with FB messenger and/or Skype.

I'm from Europe and the situation is:
>most old people (35+) use Viber, or basic SMS/calls if you're a grandpa
>everyone else uses WhatsApp
>no matter your age, you also most likely have Facebook messenger installed and simply use Viber or WhatsApp when you want to ignore contacts on Facebook
The reason older people stay on viber is simply because it first introduced free calls over internet and they just don't see a reason to replace it now when their friends and family are all using it. Now fb messenger and wire have group calls and better quality/less laggy calls, putting them in a significant advantage over viber and WhatsApp. And from what I know almost nobody who isn't a "tech geek" or a toddler who spends all day browsing playstore knows what telegram or signal are.

By less laggy calls I mean viber which from my experience is constant yelling "hello? Can you hear me?!" and disconnection. Every other app was fine.

an unencrypted IM client built so closely to a graphing tool of one of the most notorious datamining corporations is still a bit unsettling
constructing and passing your social graph to facebook is only one of the possible problems in that

by all means, use it. so do I. but queries to facebook's servers are a viable concern

You can get people to switch tho if you advertise your product the right way, discord is a great example of that. Sadly, FOSS companies in most cases fail to do that because they either dont have the money to fund a good campaign or are too anti-commercial to even consider promoting their software in a serious way.

lmao i somehow overlooked that post but DID respond to it. This app is even worse than i thought

This. FOSS is collapsing for this very reason.

It's standard business practice in the industry to expand the market and increase adoption while operating at a loss. Discord seems like a healthy product on track of becoming a staple social networking platform for some users so it's not a shaky investment by normal standards.

Hey dont lump all europeans together. Dane here, everybody, both teens and adults communicate with either: SMS (this includes imessage etc), facebook messenger or snapchat. And thats about it. Like 95%+ use this combination.
I have met some who have Viber if they have friends over seas.

same Forgot, when calling its like 99% just regular phone calls. It's like this because almost every subscription plan free unlimited SMS/MMS and several hours of call time for free. Heck most phone plans are moving to free unlimited call's as well for the same price.
So when you can get free unlimited phone calls, SMS and MMS for like 15$, the need for whatsapp, viber etc. is not really there.
Even if you dont have a subscription with unlimited call's, almost every phone plan has free call's if you are calling someone from the same company. Like if you have a subscription with "3" you can call anyone who also has "3" for free.

I don't know anyone who still uses SMS unless it's an emergency. Everyone prefers an app for some reason (and it's not free calls). They probably like emojis and the fact that it's better than MMS for photo sharing. IMs are also much more responsive, have faster deliveries and seem more reliable and overall handle multiple contacts and chat groups better. And yes lots of people use messengers for free calls and messages towards other countries, but as I've said I really don't see calls being used that often.
Overall I feel like 95% people have Facebook messenger on their phones and some people use WhatsApp as a direct replacement for SMS/MMS only for close friends.

>pajeet app

I just wanted to tell you that you make good danes look bad by being a pajeet.

>discordapp.com/privacy
>we may share this aggregate data with our affiliates, agents and business partners. We may also disclose aggregated user statistics in order to describe our services to current and prospective business partners, and to other third parties
I.e. how and why this service can be "free".
>You may give us permission to collect your information in other services. [..] you may connect a social networking service ("SNS") such as Facebook or Twitter to your Discord account. When you do this, it allows us to obtain information from those accounts (for example, your friends or contacts)
Data collected doesn't pertain just to single-user.
>Third Party Services
More selling of your data with third parties.
>Our Use of Your Information
More third party involvement
>As we develop our business, we might sell or buy businesses or assets. In the event of a corporate sale [...] or similar event, your information may be part of the transferred assets
User data is part of company assets.
>We may also share your information with our Related Companies
>We may also share aggregated or non-personally identifiable information with our partners or others for business purposes
More selling of user data.

All Unsolicited Information shall be deemed to be non-confidential and we shall be free to reproduce, use, disclose, and distribute such Unsolicited Information to others without limitation or attribution
And now the final kick in the bucket: anything you say, type, or any data you provide of your own accord is deemed "Unsolicited Information", and their entire entity and collective third-parties are free to share and do with it as they please without restriction. You're not only selling anonymous aggregate data by using this service, you're selling everything up to your identity. It popped up out of nowhere with nameless entities behind its funding, was shilled on various forums and gaming websites until the core userbase grew and brought into it, all for the purpose of cashing in on user data. Absolute proprietary trash of a "service". You must be retarded to use this willingly.

The government sells your data more than anyone else. Why even care at this point, you can't beat the system. Sure you can resist... But you are only delaying the inevitable.

Even when dead you will still exist in the databanks of corporations and governments.

nice try nsa

Holy fuck user, stop.

>Tfw sharing a board with paranoid hobos

Discord is just a gaming group chat app, who would use it for secure communications?

Idiots, probably.

Most people I've seen just use it for ERPing and sharing porn.

You're part of the problem.

People should just use Wire.

I want to see discord replace slack.

Everyone in my uni uses this shit and I have to add a million slack channels because it doesn't keep it under one account.

Fucking dumb.

why did they rip Slack off so hard on their design?

facebook messenger uses almost double the amount of power as discord does.

they're morons. these people are kept in this state to keep the peace. don't worry, you're doing good work.

>I don't know anyone who still uses SMS unless it's an emergency.
Hello. I do this, I have no facebook account or whatswhatever. Photo sharing via MMS is fine, if you want to share large files it can be done by email or by uploading somewhere and putting a link in an SMS that all modern text apps can open.
Emojis also aren't tied to an app and work perfectly fine in an SMS.

spot the sperg

Discord is an institution set to reinforce the soon to be state.currently the government is on the top of institutions in control, but soon corporations will lead the state and people who do not question are the most beneficial to the state.

>2017
>not using xfire

Genuine question.
What is this data and how is this remotely relevant to me?
They know saggy_bottom plays a few games, talks shit and has a throwaway email. S-should I put on tinfoil now?

They don't fund themselves from ads. They are funded by selling user information. It tells you right on their website how they make a profit...

Fake news detected

Im glad discord exists because Skype is absolute crap and TS/ventrilo/mumble etc all suck and are archaic. Discord offers everything I want

>tfw i dont have any of these "apps" installed

People like you should stay in where you belong.

>email
Nobody uses it for anything other than registering to sites

Why doesn't Amazon buy this shit while they still have the chance?

A communitation suite is the one thing they're still missing. Just integrate it into Twitch at first so it becomes the de facto gaming client and then start attacking skype

>uses facebook
>posts recipes online
>thursdays are bridge night
t.grandpa

>uses the word archaic
>thinks new is always better
>checks smartwatch
>takes mom's other son daquon to the bus stop

Which is an extremely shitty, extremely Jewish business model that is killing the internet.

It's only ensure the dankest memes on the market.
