Rhodesia could have been a prosperous country without Ian Smith, and the UDI, withholding people's independence and political representation is always going to lead to revolution, and revolution (especially in the cold war era) is always going to lead to despotism, warlords, political incompetence and corruption. Mugabe is bad but he is entirely Ian Smith's creation.

We all look back at "muh Mandela" and "muh Peace" but in reality the end of apartheid was the result of 30 years of brutal warfare and economic sanctions.
