Can any Finns tell me about my surname? My last name is Kokkonen and I know next to nothing about it. Anyone know what it means? I can give more info if needed

Surname general, I guess

Shores

Gee, I wonder

Kokko, a mythical bird of iron and fire from Finnish folklore similar to Phoenix
Kokko, a bonfire especially in Midsummer Eve celebrations in Finland

What about Heilala?

Heila
Basically means GF or BF
>if you dont have heila on helluntai, you wont have one for the whole summer.
old finnish saying.

nice surenames

could you tell me much about Kariola?

Well i can tell you it's protected(kinda rare), as in you cant take that name in Finland without a legit legal reason.
No idea what it means but Кapиoлa means the same thing in Russian.
So it's probably old ass finnish nobody even knows what it means anymore.
>i have an oldass finnish name that nobody even knows what the fuck it means unless they check it out.
So it's either of finnish in origin or russian, i have no idea.

You guys have protected names? what does that mean exactly

don't worry about it.

Some rare names are protected, like Mannerheim.
Guess it's just that not every idiot can get/ruin a famous/old family name.

not since 1985, there's a list of "protected" surnames but they don't have a official status.

what about Vesanto?

Hey Finns, can you tell me about my last name. My last name is Spurdo and I know next to nothing about it. Anyone know what it means? I can give more info if needed

Vesanto is a municipality of Finland.
Not that rare. No idea what it means but many places are named after it i guess.

and Toivonen?

...

Toivo = Hope/wish etc

Koho?

elevated I think

Fish bobble, also a hockey term or some shit like that.

Kyläheikkilä?

Kylä = village
Heikki = finnish name

village of Heikki (first name)

and Aaltonen?

heikki budia = hundred grams of bud :DDDD
heikki is also a slangterm for 100g

aalto = wave (water)

Aalto = wave.
You live in a finnish diaspora town or something?

Tanha?

no just some people around where I live, and what of Laine

>Tanha?
Not finnish to my knowledge.

might be karelian, i'm not sure. tahna is paste

Laine is the head of a wave

fair enough, Isotumasitini?

same meaning as Aalto.

Every surname is protected, that is, you need a legit reason to change. However there's an urban legend that it only applies to aristocratic or rich families, or well it used to be so a long time ago.

no idea

I always get excited when I encounter a Finnish name. I met a Ruohonen a couple months ago.

you must have misspelled that

I'd say thats not finnish, even tho Iso = big

No
fair enough
Saariranta?

island beach

>Ruoho
grass
>Saari
island
>Ranta
shore

Rantahalvari and Varjamo?

>halvari
dates back to Finnish lapland, I could not find additional info
>varmajo
Surname from finnish ostrobotnia

Namiauudenmaailmankalu?

wut

The -nen ending in many Finnish surnames is diminutive. So for example Toivonen translates to "a small hope", Virtanen to "a small river" or Kokkonen to "a small bonfire" or that bird from our folklore.

t. didn't sleep through 8th grade Finnish lessons

I need to ask the male Finns here a question I've been curious about

Namia = a bunch of candy
Uuden = of something new
Maailman = of world
Kalu = physical doohickey

okay so this is for all of you pretty much
When you guys were Finnish conscripts, did you know anybody at all who wanted to fight and kill and put their training to use? Or did everybody just get through it not caring

nobody cares

I tried to tell them that I had learned the art of killing playing games and wanted to fight the ruski, but instead they just handed me the infamous C papyri.

I still don't know why.

What is that?

C papers just mean that you are unfit for duty during peacetime, so I got to play WoW instead of larping in a forest for 12 months.

Does that mean that you did the siviili palvelus or whatever?

No, not even that. You can choose siviilipalvelus instead of conscription even if you are fit for duty. Loonies, like me, get a free pass though.

wouldn't that get sent on some personal record and everybody looking to hire you or whatever would think you're crazy or something

As far as I know it doesn't go into your public record but I might be wrong. If an employer asks about your military service you can just say that you have done your duty to your country, which is technically correct since I might have shot someone if I actually went there :DDD, so essentially by being absent I saved fellow Finns.

Looking to get on pension within five years.

well damn that seems fun

I enlisted just a couple weeks ago, I am fairly excited to serve my eternal Jew

Good goy.

do you have finnish citizenship or something? If so you'd have to do military service in finland.

Thanks, bro.
nah, US military, and I don't have any Finnish in me

I see, dual citizenship would require you to do Finnish military service.

Would they take it away if somebody didn't do it? Pretty interesting
what if that person didn't speak a word of finnish

I'm not sure actually. Language shouldn't really be a problem.

>Roberson
Meaning: hillbilly spelling of Robertson = son of a man of shining fame

why wouldn't it be? I mean would they speak whatever language to you then?

Pretty sure most people here know English well enough.

>Aim there, shoot Ivan!

If any german is still awake, what can you tell me about the surname kaefer? I original spelling was different

Thought for the last half an hour that I was posting in /mämmi/.

Guess I'll never know
