People who buy macbooks to fit in and not because they needed the features afforded by a $2000 laptop.

Pretty much any kind of smug behavior involving technology.

the telemetry meme

UI change for the sake of change
Don't market your software as a tool for professionals and treat it as a plaything to keep your overpaid graphic designers busy.

To add to this, people who buy expensive gadgets on a payment plan.
You CANNOT AFFORD this shit, why do you even buy it?
Is it so you can pretend you're not poor? You're gonna look poor regardless when you're babying the shit out of your stuff and using the word "resale value".
Yes, your financial situation is so fucking dire that all of your possessions need to be in good condition so you can liquidate them in an afternoon.

people who dont use linux like me

BSD.

Modern browsers

Modern technology is like some sort of miracle space age crazy shit that wasn't even around when I was a kid, yet I still get pissed off when Youtube lags for a second or two loading up a video of a cat knocking something over.

Foobar2000 not being open source (despite being freeware). I wanted something like the oscilloscope in it on Linux so I just wrote my own. It's compatible with JACK too so I can take in sources (audio off of a synth or whatever) besides what foobar would've let me. There's some other stuff I wanted fixed about its visualizations so I'm going to be writing those too.

Payment plans are all scams, you end up paying 4 times as much over a longer period of time.

Macbooks don't have those features, though. Unless a glowing apple on the back is a $1000 feature now.

You'll never stop the smug.

>Unless a glowing apple on the back is a $1000 feature now.

it is

They don't have that feature anymore either.

So basically, you pay $2000 because your laptop is made of a single block of machined soda can metal.

At some point, technology went from making our lives easier to distracting us from the nature of being human. In fact, it goes so far as a distraction that many see it as having redefined all the big questions, or worse, they project this distorted view onto the past and claim that this is what it's always been about. The word "progress" in a more general use (not specifically progress in one field) actually disturbs me whenever I hear it.
Technological progress...
And it just keeps going, on and on, like a perverted cross between a pandora's box, a prisoners dilemma and a time bomb.

nonexistant besides at Sup Forums

>telemetry
>nonexistent
what

elaborate further

>all the big questions
like which ones?

I dislike technological progress because it just means more ways to monetize your life, but you could always just ignore them.

I don't know what more to say, or was I unclear?
Technology as a means to an end has become the apparent end itself, and in many areas it's lost all measure.

I feel you.

Using foobar2000 on Wine because the other music players do all suck so much.

>distracting us from the nature of being human
how so?
>all the big questions
which ones?
>distorted view
distorted in what way?

That's what I meant.
also would like to know

unless the payment plan is a "pay it off in 6 months and you don't pay any interest" type thing

$2000 over 6 months is a lot easier than a single bulk $2000 payment

Keep trying to justify your poor purchasing decisions.

I know man, people have been asking the maintainer of that program forever to open source it but it's not likely to happen. I've been using cmus but I think it has some issues (though some would say that it's more on the tags, not the program, but whatever). I made a demo program for doing visualizations in ncurses, but the framerate on ncurses wasn't 60fps. Takes too much CPU also. I moved over to OpenGL after learning it in a little under a week and it's much better. The GPU is doing all the calculations for me and I can use the code for other things that I want to make also (like a non-live viewer of audio data), and I get more flexibility since I control the shader code now rather than just having some config file or theme. I'll be putting it up for you Sup Forumsuys once it's not so janky (should be by next week) and maybe someone can write the OpenGL code better than me and improve it.

What are we - not on a biological level, but on a phenomenological level. Why we're here, what we're trying to achieve, what we (and I mean we, not what big capital told us to) want, what do we need, what don't we need, what actually makes our lives better and so on and so on.
When I talk to some people, I get the impression that "progress" is almost a religion to them. There's a clear tree of progression, it's always been the goal of humanity - and indeed duty towards the future of humanity, more technology is better, etc. When I ask why we need so much shit I either get called a communist or a nihilist. But you tell me, will the next toy be created because it will truly make someone happier, or because we "need" economical growth? Will the next break through in display technology come because this will elevate us as a species to a level of happiness unattainable before, or because we just simple always need more? It reminds me of the reason why trees evolved to grow so tall.
This is just my drunk late night ramblings though, apologies if it's not coherent.

I love technology and I love following technological progress, especially in computing and computer networks.
But I hate how technological advancements are leading humanity towards a global totalitarian government armed with total surveillance and heavy media brainwashing.

16:9 displays on laptops. Even business laptops and workstations have these. But since everyone is fine with them nothing will change I guess. Funny how companies like to emulate Apple yet they won't emulate the screen.

It makes me angry that there is no demand for these.

If you never knew about it your life would be better, not worse

I want one. Absolutely hate typing on the touchscreen.
Been searching for some android phone with a keyboard for a long LONG time but the only ones I ever find around here are ancient models.

Yeah, also using cmus at times.

It cannot handle my current library... it crashes on metadata indexing. Likely a bad parser.

Google has the best browser.
I know it, you know it, we all know it.

social media cancer everywhere

That no one seems to care about repairability.

There are devices that cost over $1000 and can't even be opened.

Specs pissing contests, you see this a lot in the Android scene. So many wankers bragging about their 1080p resolution on a 4 inch phone like it even matters at that point.

>1080p
>4 inch phone
I wish this were still the case

Advancements in display technology means cheaper displays that are more energy efficient. Thats not a huge thing in itself but it does make technology like computers and phones more accessible so its valid progress.

A dildo factory invented a new kind of servo motor that makes the dildo vibrations stronger and makes the battery last longer?
That piece of knowledge will only be used in dildos at first but it can be a huge advancement in some other utility that will make someone's live better.

The same way videogame nerds and porn addict neckbeards funded VR so hard but in the end its going to be a extremely useful technology on important areas like medicine, engineering and many others.

Any technological advancement is good.

You mean because you don't see it, it's not there. Everyone with an IQ>97 can deactivate W10AU's telemetry completely but its tendinous. Every account, every piece if software (even FF) needs to be deactivated. Its just annoying.

dumb

>important areas

This never happens.
