Why do people use this garbage instead of IRC?

why do people use this garbage instead of IRC?

it has voice and images and videos (embedded not just links)
Fantastic emojis and custom emojis
The devs are cool and post funny memes
Easy to use UI (I couldn't register a simple account in that shitty IRC command and no UI thing)
Soon its going to have video calls too
I can go on but I hope you got BTFOed and if you want to say "muh freedom", not everyone hides CP like you in their PC, so we don't have anything to hide beside the porn search history that's two clicks away from deletion

Discord is actually usable

Normies don't know how to IRC

Why do people keep making this garbage thread instead of good ones?

kiwiirc.com

>so we don't have anything to hide beside the porn search history that's two clicks away from deletion
Really ?
Wanna share your credit card details and social security number with Sup Forums then ?

>a thread died for this

this is basically the entire story

From le spooky botnet that Sup Forums shitposts about, not your retarded slippery slope ass

...

>people
People that are video gamers, yes

>I couldn't register a simple account in that shitty IRC command and no UI thing
If you can't even figure out how NickServ works, what are you doing on Sup Forums? It gives you a set of instructions so straightforward and simple that you shouldn't even be able to get it wrong. This would be the equivalent of going to /k/ without knowing how to do something as simple as disassembling your gun, or even worse, how to load and fire it.

It's pretty convenient.

>what are you doing in Sup Forums
he is robably learning how NickServ works

The nu-g is all about latest iproduct discussion/circlejerking
Technology doesnt really belong here anymore

I'm don't want to explain how to register every time someone joins the clan irc

Because my friends are on it and it's easier to voice chat on there than irc

People understand registering for an account and friends lists etc much better than messaging NickServ and joining channels etc (not even gonna mention needing to host a BNC just for offline messaging)

They both still have their advantages/disadvantages over each other though, it's really too bad Discord isn't open source, if it was I could see it replacing IRC pretty easily after some changes

what about jabber?
supports offline messages and is open sauce
and free to boot

I was just memeing desu. But I'll tell you why I don't like Discord.

I don't like Chromium's god awful font rendering.
I don't like that Discord has no options for font size unless I either 1) open the dev console and force it to scale everything down, 2) write a goddamn entire custom CSS for it, or 3) write a plugin to get this basic functionality that everything else has.
I don't like that Discord's UI isn't responsive at all. It doesn't react to resizing the window, doesn't resize or rearrange a single UI element other than the most fucking important one. The user list and "server"/channel list both stay just as huge if you make the window narrower. Shit's retarded.
I don't like that the "light" theme only affects half the fucking client.
I don't like that it doesn't adhere to system defaults. Why does it need to replace the perfectly good title bar with something that takes up literally twice as much space ? Why can't I press Escape to close the rightclick menu ? Why does fucking Chromium use its own shitty ass font rendering, forcing it on everyone who uses Chromium based shit ?
I don't like that I can't view a specific private conversation with a single keyboard shortcut. I especially don't like that Ctrl+1 brings me to the last opened conversation regardless of whether I just got a notification for a different one.

Based on these things, I legitimately don't understand how people like this user experience. I don't understand what makes people think it's good. It isn't. Fucking Skype is a better piece of software on nearly all points.

>ancient technology which is barely used
>simpler, more user-friendly technology with more features

gee i wonder

not spoopy at all :^)

>using a proprietary piece of crap over a standardized open protocol that can work with any client and is very extensible
gtfo and never come back

Discord is basicly just another "app" shit. Normies will use it because its what normies do in current year.

Irc is the entire protocol, its open, you can have your own client, your own server, or use tools provided by third party.

xmpp is irrelevant

discord people just collect user data and once they run out of funding, they sell the whole thing to someone
like they did with openfeint

no one is on IRC anymore

>not using Wire

Why would you say that?

Why the fuck would they save pics of me in a dress you realize how worthless that data is to whoever they sell it to?Next thing you're going to tell me is that they saved the videos I posted in the discord or me fingering my ass.

stop shilling this shit. irc will never die.

Font rendering isn't an issue to me. I am not autistic in that way.
Font size is usually not customizable. I can't find any font customization in skype.
It does not work well with a narrow window size. I'm OK with this, as programs like skype don't let you change the window size past a certain point.
I'm unable to find the light theme. Sucks that there's not another theme available by default. I don't think skype supports any themes.
The window does suck--I hate moving it around, but that's about it. It's not terribly distracting. What bothers me more is windows that can't be moved or resized.
I usually left click to get out of right clicks.
I find it doesn't handle direct messages well. I would rather get an email or text message though. I don't particularly consider discord as a text client.

Now onto positives:
It easily allows you to join multiple communities with a small link
The web interface allows for bots, making things easier for the more technically inclined
You can easily create a new server without much trouble
Voice uses Opus. I honestly don't know why someone would use Mumble, Teamspeak, or Ventrilo over Discord, as Discord also has a somewhat well implemented text channel system which includes a searchable history.

I don't think any comparable voice+chat software is as easy to use.

I bet you use a Mac and an iPhone too faggot

>It easily allows you to join multiple communities with a small link
The links expire and malfunction, whereas a simple /join #channel is enough in my irc client.
>The web interface allows for bots, making things easier for the more technically inclined
The bots on discord are pure cancer. Some channels I've joined have a multple times more bots than users. Also, a text interface is of equal usefulness to a bot as it is to a human. IRC wouldn't have the disadvantage of being bound to a graphical shell, so it doesn't need to engineer around it.
>You can easily create a new server without much trouble
You can create a room, but the actual servers are centralized. You can't have your own server at all, you're just using someone else's servers. Well, with irc, you can spawn a channel by joining it and have ops.

It's because Sup Forums can't into irc.
By Sup Forums I mean neo Sup Forums as well. You know who you are, fuck off, you are not welcome here.

Sup Forums needs to be partitioned into two. /gh/ for the macfaggots, shills, laptop vidyacard and gaymen vedditors. /gs/ for the old school technology discussion

Why i use discord?

Simple entertainment and discussion.
Nobody is forcing you to use it....

>font rendering is autism
Look, faggot.
On one hand you have sharp, readable fonts.
On the other you have a blurry mess of shit.
Pick one.

I use it for work since it's what the company uses.

It's easy and relatively simple to use for normies, so it branched into becoming a good way for me and my tabletop game group to game over hte internet.

Unlike skype it doesn't suck.

IRC=text boards
Discord=image boards

>Sup Forums - Consumer electronics, reviews and technical support

It's easier to post gay furry porn images in discord

No it's not. Normies don't even know IRC exists because it's not commercial. If someone pushed it normies would've used it. IRC's day has gone though, I used IRC for one reason or another almost constantly between 1995-2013 but I can't think of any reason why I'd ever use it again.

Because it's fun to use for normal people, IRC isn't.

Personally I don't use anything because talking to people is retarded.

But you're talking to me right now

then who was phone?

Posting on Sup Forums is more akin to shouting out loud in the middle of a room while a hundred other people are shouting next to you, occasionally someone will shout a reply back to something you shouted, but for the most part it's just useless noise.

This must be bate

BUT THAT'S STILL A FORM OF CONVERSATION! CAN YOU HEAR ME?

i hear my own voice reading your posts. so essentially i am conversing with myself

>58984923
>Easy to use UI
It has the worst UI I've ever seen on mobile

i dont know but i wish they would stop

But then who am I?

Video calls/Screen sharing (SOON)
better search feature (don't have to use an outside program to scour logs)
Friends List
Voice channels and multiple channels on a server

>The links expire and malfunction, whereas a simple /join #channel is enough in my irc client.
this is by design to prevent people from spreading links around easily and flooding chats with shitters.
you can, however, create them with unlimited uses and unlimited time to use them.

>much easier
>attached muh 'emoji'
>anyone can make server
not only Sup Forums using discord another board using too

>Easy to use UI
I've never seen an IRC client with an UI as shitty as the Discord one. Just awful.

The images, videos, emojis, custom emojis, and voice are all cons, not pros. The first four are all much better served with links or plaintext, and for voice, mumble exists. Discord is harmful because due to some muh-integration nonsense, people prefer running one program that does both text and voice badly to two programs of which one is dedicated to text (and therefore does it better) and one to voice.

Discord was heavily shilled on its launch to game devs which rely on it as part of feedback for early access games and to gather data instead of relying on server hosting with the traditional bundles of teamspeak, ventrilo, mumble.

It's a terrible botnet, anyone sensible enough would notice it from the start.

the UI is like twitch threw up and an an instant messenger came out, and bearing witness to it made teamspeak puke up a little bit onto the pile too.

i can't understand why the game overlay is voice chat only. if my buddy wants to dump steam for discord, i still have to use steam to talk to him in-game because he doesn't use a mic.

It's horrible on mobile

Get fucked, phoneposter

So many ancient tards in this thread. My mind is blown.

IRC is old man tech. You cant even post pics via irc. Fucking msn messenger from 2000 could do that

Just make a script that convert pictures to ansiart or other types of text art.

WHAT IF
there was an IRC shell for morons? Where it would make it similar to Discord in that text commands would be left to experienced people only, with majority of most used commands delegated to buttons and text input controls?

>The devs are cool and post funny memes
no that part of discord is cancer

>oh noooooooo a battlestation thread nobody was reading or replying to is in the archive instead of page 10!
suck an egg

irc is more likely to reveal your IP address
discord is not

I can't wait for them to be bought out by facebook and then have a huge portion of the userbase jump ship because they don't like facebook.

IRC:
>text chat

Discord:
>text chat
>voice chat
>video chat soon
>file/image upload
>easier for dumbasses to use

Yeah, it's a mystery why people prefer it over IRC.

>this argument
Look, if discord can manage to find my CC and SS# then I would have to worry more about the hundreds of other sites that can also have my info. Discord has no way of IDing anyone through those methods, all they got is usage data from the app itself and possibly any browser tabs you have open alongside discord.

>If you don't care about your privacy for one app why not give up ALL your info?
Flawed logic. Again discord doesn't collect any payment info, so why does that equate to my CC and Social being open to the internet? Discord isn't some black market irc chatroom and no one is on there worrying about their messages being leaked n shit.

>Discord has no way of IDing anyone through those methods

>what is speaker recognition
>what is face recognition
>what is selling this data for aggregation to interested parties like gaming companies that will then put instant ads in your game

>BUH BUH ITS JUST AWFUL BECAUSE ITS NOT SUPER MINIMAL AND AUTISTIC TO MY LIKING

>WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT TAKES A COUPLE OF CLICKS TO DO SOMETHING? I WANT TO TYPE COMMANDS CUZ IT MAKES ME FEEL SUPER LEET HAXCOOORRR XDDDD

i hope you die.

I have to use a mac for work because apple's VPN is OSX only. My team communicates via iMessage, so I use my iPhone as well occasionally. My primary phone is a nexus.

It's so much easier to instruct someone to join a discord server if you don't have the software installed though:
discord.gg/Bq9Xdd and follow the instructions vs download an IRC client, connect to 64.29.30.11 then type /join #faggot. The IRC client involves a LOT more keypresses.

APIs were created so that you don't have to be bound to a graphical shell.

I don't need to own my server. It's probably better that way because my DSL upload speed is slow.

>blurry mess of shit
it's not, hence why I don't care. Bokeh is a blurry mess of shit, and I sit far enough away from my monitors to not care. It also looks better when you use smaller pixels.

>not everyone hides CP like you in their PC

Friendly reminder

who uses this shit besides GAYMERZ?

>I don't need to own my server. It's probably better that way because my DSL upload speed is slow.

You can register a channel to any existing IRC server. The description of "server" Discord uses is very twisted and should never ever be used outside of it's shitty ecosystem. You'll sound like a plebeian.

>Sup Forums like microsoft
I know it's bait, but at least be a little believable.

>I know it's bait

Back you go,

Because IRC is not pushed on you by faggots.

I like IRC but Discord is being shilled by every group now, so if I don't use it is like quitting the groups.

People like Discord because it's the "just werks" version of IRC.

IRC "just werks", too

Why don't people care about their privacy? Why would people all just jump onto a closed-source platform that popped up out of nowhere with a developed interface and features (funding from where?), with a privacy policy stating they collect any and all data pertaining to users use of the service to sell to "third-parties"?

Not for many people.

>IRC
Download client
Get the server address
Set up server connection
Scary text based commands and interface
>Discord
Download client
Choose a nickname
Link accounts of social media stuff, from steam to leddit
Friends will be linked automatically

It's easy to see why normalfags like it.

>Scary text based commands and interface
>Scary
LOL'ED

There are tons of websites where you just have to enter your nickname and the rest is handled automatically. Don't even need to download a client.

They are unlikely to be optimized for phoneposters

Well, that's how normalfags see it.
I remember back when I was at the uni, even in my stemtard faculty, most first semester fags were like "what the fuck is this witchery" when they touched ganoolanux for the first time.

People like having an independent platform exclusively to chat.
Hence why messenger (fb) exists.
Also the discord app exists for pc and phone, so it's easy peasy for them.
I know that irc phone apps exists, but that's not the point.

I cant fucking stand any of these worthless "apps" that decided you need our company and our servers and our unlimited rights to anything sent over those servers to send a fucking string of text or a picture from one persons computer to another.
Just kill me already, I dont want to live in this gay world.

>why do people
>people
They're normies.

Untrue. I only use XMPP and IRC.

I don't share my credit card details or social security number with Discord.

OK Sup Forums I HAVE THIS FIGURED OUT
HOW TO TRICK NORMIES INTO USING IRC

Step 1.
Put all existing IRC applications to the thrash bin.
Step 2.
Create a logo.
Step 3.
Create a Discord-like shell for IRC. The less commands a person has to type in and more buttons he has to press the better. Links to videos and images should be embedded client side. It should all run on javascript and have some web page for hosting but a person could just save the webpage and still access the features with an older version that he stored.

Asking some "nerd" friend to come on IRC cause MSN sucked bollocks was

>I don't have to type/search the server you and your channel are in,just use MSN cause it has everything I need without any kind of hassle

That was 14ish years ago when Miranda existed and all the clients but Wilco and TS could be used and kept in working order with few clicks.Passed him Miranda client and the .cfg and he went even more bollocks.

We're lucky cause now,in the present day we managed to convince him to use WA otherwise he was still stuck with Skype

Good luck doing VOIP with an IRC server.

This is what it has come to, and I want off this ride.

In my experience most people don't use voice chat.

netmeeting still works wonders and I still have the ball shaped logitech camera

This is what Tox could have been. Think about it.
