To be fair, the broadsword and the katana are different swords created for different combat situations. For what the katana did, it was extremely effective. Quick to draw, had a clean cut, and wasn't too weighty.

the katana was a weapon of last resort. it was used to slain unarmed peasants, and as far as i know, a katana and a broadsword have the same weight (depending on the length).

I don't know how much a broadsword weighs in comparison, but a katana must have been pretty light and slender, considering ronin and samurai would very often carry multiple ones around their waist when going to combat.
