When you are trying to remember how to write a Kanji, do you try to "spell" the Kanji with radicals? This is hard to explain and a stupid question.

Some are useful but once you get to more abstract words you wont be able to read the word even if you know what both the kanji that composes the word means

radicals is to kanji what suffix or prefix is to English word
for example like the suffix "-cide" means the killing of the person or thing indicated by the first component of the word, the radicals さんずい(氵) means something like water

That feels a little similar to what I'm experiencing while learning Spanish (even though spanish and japanese is not similar.) I come across phrases/words made up of words that I understand the meaning of separately, but doesn't make since when combined together. I guess you guys experience the same thing when learning English?
I know Japanese is way harder than Spanish but it seems the language learning process is similar for all languages.
