I got one so I would never have to pay for books again. So far so good but only expect to be able to read a few formats. I wish i wish wish that pdfs would just reflow nicely, particularly two column format papers.
Is there any effort to put a free as in freedom OS on kindles? I use none of the Amazon features because they only add them to their own content. Sometimes you can fool it with some .az3 files but mostly I just use .mobi.

I have a non backlit one for about a year now, and im quite happy with it. Buy it, but dont expect pdfs to be as readable as on a pc. You can zoom in, tho

I have one, it's great if you pirate ebooks (epub, mobi, etc) but terrible for pdf viewing (all eink readers are afaik).
calibre is a must have and will convert any ebook format to any other

but go to aliexpress, go for any tablet, you want to spend 80-120 or so, and look at any tablet that sits there. You can get octo core processors, which is overkill.
Size-wise, anything smaller than 11 inches or so, but larger than 8

It can read pdf files natively, its just that between the nature of both eink devices and pdf files it sucks no matter what. You can jailbreak it and there might be other sideloadable readers that handle pdfs better but I don't know the specifics. If a pdf isn't jam packed with images and other wacky shit it might be possible to convert to an ebook with calibre

I own a Paperwhite and have never paid for a book through Amazon. They are great for pirating or free books but I suspect Kobos may edge them out ever so slightly due to accepting a wider range of filetypes out of the box. Software like calibre makes this irrelevant though, unless either device can download stuff directly through their browser, i don't know.

I suppose one that has no networking ability and maybe runs something like andorid exists. That would already be plenty better in the sense that at least no one can remotely access your books.
Is Kobo any better, really. Sure, they haven't deleted anyone's books in the past, but couldn't they do the same if they wanted? Their shop is DRM'd, too.
