Chrome 57 will throttle background tabs to save energy

engadget.com/2017/03/15/chrome-57-throttle-background-tabs/

>If you use Chrome as a primary browser, you'll know that it can be a resource hog that eats up too much battery. The browser's latest version was designed to solve that issue by throttling background tabs using excessive power. According to the Chromium blog, background tabs are responsible for one-third of Chrome's power usage on computers, so keeping them in check will minimize the browser's impact.

>Chrome's Page visibility API checks tabs after 10 seconds in the background. The new feature will leave tabs playing audio or maintaining WebSockets or WebRTC connections alone, since the API considers them to be in the foreground. However, it minimizes all the tabs the API considers to be in the background unless it's absolutely necessary to run them at full capacity.

>The Chrome team says this new mechanism can lead to 25 percent fewer busy background tabs. Since their goal is fully suspend those tabs, though, their work is far from done. Chrome 57 has been out for a few days now. You can download it anytime, especially if you're always on the go and would like to limit Chrome's impact on your laptop.

>play youtube video on a background tab
>nope, enjoy your kill -STOP dude

>>play youtube video on a background tab
Read first.

> websites will play "silent audio" to keep working

Right, so it'll skip pausing audio/video and dynamic websites.

So what's the fucking point if it only pauses static tabs? once they're loaded they don't use shit anyway.

And chrome solidifies even further it's undeniable dominance as best browser

How can anything else even compete?

>play video in background
>video
>in backround

Silent to your ears, perhaps. It could very well emit ultrasound that's picked up by your phone and then it does some botnet stuff.

don't be a retard. It doesn't work like that. In fact you can leave shit playing on the background no problem.

I sometimes play ASMR videos in the background to help me relax and keep stress levels down while working.

>stress while working

If you're getting stressed with work you're in the wrong job.

fuck off

Why? What's wrong with ASMR? :(

Good, about fucking time they did this.
Though it should be as a checkbox feature for the user to choose it.

?

>Using Stable Channel

Lmfao

You'll have to buy YouTube Red :^)

>If you're getting stressed with work you're in the wrong job

Step in a right direction, but needs to fix that fucking memory leak. Pic related is chrome with one tab open thats been playing youtube videos for 6 hours (youtube playlist).

Pretty cool. I used to do the same manually using the task manager when I had like 2GBs of ram on my toaster.

>one is a legit stupid thing to do
>assuming they won't be workarounds for the other
Le contrarian Sup Forums meme

Well shit, I wanted to use Chrome on this shit but instead I use Safari to save battery. This is cool stuff. Fuck Safari and Slowassfox

I wonder if this will affect Sup Forums thread updaters. They have to constantly be running in the background to work.

It's what the Facebook app does so that it stays open on iOS and android. Kills battery life but they really don't want you closing their app in th background

Opera BTFO.

Can't wait for dumb fuck node.js developers writing guides about how you should make a useless websocket WebRTC connection on your website to prevent evil chrome from throttling it when it's in the background, "just in case".

Chrome won't fully suspend tabs until 2018. You can use The Great Suspender in the mean time.

how about a dick massage?

>this
I use Canary as my secondary web browser on my phone (when FF doesnt work quite right)

>Instead I use Safari
Webkit nightly or kill yourself.

What the fuck is this and why does it put me in some kinda trance? I've never been affected by shit like this before. What's going on?

That video is designed to promote a deeper state of relaxation within the viewer and induce a euphoric tingling feeling called ASMR.

This lady, a well-known creator of ASMR videos describes ASMR:

i find them creepy

...

not him but work don't stress me, the shitheads that are with me during work does, and as i can't kill them yet music of any kind do help.

A new JavaScript framework is born.

The best part is I'm so lonely and it's the only way for me to hear the silky smooth voices of real life females. I would send them money if they asked...

No browser general so here goes

Are there any blacklist extensions? I want to block myself from going to porn websites since that's a lot easier than self-control, but I can't find an extension for pale moon that doe this. Preferably with password lock to make it even harder to whitelist

You will pull them out of blacklist anyway. But why extension? There is OpenDNS server with "parental control" or something like that.

this asmr shit is looking good

>javascript bitcoin miners btfo

Wish browsers were simpler without all these bullshit "features" that can't be turned off. No matter how far hardware advances, software always find ways to become more bloated.

>not using Chromium

All thanks to HTML5! Progress!

HTML5 video is the most god-awful thing to happen to the web.
Leaky piece of shit.
