I've seen a few of these threads on here and I'm not sure where else to put it but is razor technology a load of bullshit? I see a lot of people on here raving about older safety razors and I was wondering if that was legit or just more Sup Forums contrarianism bullshit

it's hipsters

If you want a face smooth as a babies butt get good with the safety razor, if all you care is not to look like some neck beard then the cartridge ones are fine

i ended up buying one, works fine, takes a little more finesse, but in the end it's much much cheaper.

I use one. It works as well as other razors. Not better. I use it because buying blades is better pollution wise. I can take care of paper and the blades break down well. It's also shiney.

You can get about 500 double-edged razor blades for the price of one 10-pack six-blade turbo gillette face-fucker cartridges, is the main selling point.

I use one, though not a fancy one like pic related, just a cheap plastic one. It still shaves better than fancy 3 blade razors and cheaper too.

I want to buy a chink one on Ali. Should I pull the trigger?

safety razors pro:
cheap as fuck blades, can use a fresh blade for every shave
fresh blades = consistent, close shave
con:
can cut yourself, requires more time

buy a merkur handle and a sample pack of blades to find what brand you like

100 blades costs between 5-10 dollars
and a handle costs ~25 dollars

5 blades and a handle for some schick or gillette is about 35 dollars too

then why the fuck are companies able to market their 20 blade razors with anal lube strips that hydrate your face and give you the best shave in the history of the universe

Just get a Japanese blade and sharpen it every so often.

No get a good one from Germany on amazon.

It is only hipster if you save money on razor blades then use all the money you saved plus more to buy all the other shaving stuff like soaps, fancy brush, etc. I just use water and shaving cream.

>soaps, fancy brush
buy a 5 dollar brush on amazon + one of those $10 pucks of soap
the soaps last me about a year

>takes a little more finesse, but in the end it's much much cheaper.

maximum meme

some people really enjoy shaving this way ergo people literally shave as a hobby

some inexpensive cartridges off ebay last me longer and cost less overall and no worries of a bad stroke and slashing your face

>pollution
I bet you have them shipped to you

Get a good razor for like 50 euro.
Get a brush for like 10-15 euro.
Get a better soap (proraso for example)
Buy blades online.

It's:
cheaper
better cut
a bit more fun
better for your skin (I have bad skin and notice that)

>soaps, fancy brush, etc. I just use water and shaving cream.

Regular-ass Walmart soap and brush costs the same as regular ass shave cream

What if don't shave to have fun?

Been using one for about two years now.
I would never go back, but there is more of a learning curve. Took me about a month before I was really comfortable with it.
Get some proraso soap in the bowl and feather blades.

i have a safety razor, its fucking fantastic
the blades are really cheap over at aliexpress or ebay too, just bought a pack of 50 for about $10
that'll last me over a year honestly

Dont buy tue cheap shit you see at walmart kiddo.

It doesn't have to be more fun.
A lot of people find it more fun though.

Safety razors are better for sensitive skin. I think they're a little cheaper in the long run as well. Blades are relatively easy to come by and if not you can order online and then you have a good selection of different brand blades. Id say go for it.

Marketing.

My grandfather gave me his a few years ago, I'll never go back.

>tfw feather hi-stainless platinum blades and cremo shaving cream

Use multiblade for daily shave, it's much friendlier for the skin.
Use safety razors if you have a small beard, it will cut through with ease

>I think they're a little cheaper in the long run as well.

A little.

I don't know man. I think they have a point.

I've been shaving for 10 years with a Gillette type cartridge razor, and never really considered shaving any other way. When I got sick of paying $20 for a pack of 4 cartridges, I signed up for dollar shave club.

Last week I picked up a cheap $20 safety razor from Walgreens of all places, and I have to say I genuinely think it's the better way to go. I get a closer shave, I've only nicked myself one time (my fault, dragged it over a mole in a stupid way), and the blades are dirt cheap.

I think razor companies just managed to market them out of existence for about 20 years, and people are finally starting to catch on.

>it's much friendlier for the skin.
No.

Is it factoring in the shaving cream or anything else?

Safety razors give a better shave and the blades are 10 cents. I'm glad I bought one, it paid for itself in a year. Shaving cream doesn't matter, buy cheap stuff like Barbasol.

Really, you could use the same cream for all of those. So I don't think it's a factor.

Ignoring the fact you can get sensors off ebay and other places for $1 per cartridge and one cartridge lasts me a month...

With safety razors I changed the blade every shave because if I didn't it could skip on a patch of hair from being slightly dull and this tiny skip would cut my face no matter how little pressure applied. This also forced me to always buy the most expensive sharpest ones. The cheaper ones would rape my face even harder.

Safety razors are only for shaving enthusiasts and you really need to consider that you likely aren't one.

Man, "tired of paying $20 for a 4 pack of blades" is repeated 24 fucking 7 by every single service that hosts ads, but I've never paid anything but $12 for 18 totally disposable blades
Fuck that ball-ass fukkboi joint cartridge bullshit, I want a plastic stick with a sharp knife at the end, and I want 18 of them

I'm getting far more enjoyable shaving with that one compared to 2 or 3-blade ones

Maybe your face is defective.

I casually use a garbage plastic safety razor and re-use random-ass cheap blades for weeks and haven't cut myself since the very first shave.

You're doing something horrendously wrong.

Why doesn't the cartridge "skip" from being dull? I highly doubt you could use a cartridge for a month but a DE razor is too full after one shave.

I assume people saying easier on the skin are comparing to multi razor blades? I have terrible skin (ingrown hairs often, red bumps when actually shaving) which is why I have almost exclusively used a trimmer for 5 years. It's that small gillete fusion electric but it's basically shot and the plastic blades are worn to shit now. I'd like to start shaving again but my skin is ass

okay kid me and every other non retard how chose cartridges OVER safety razors back in the day because of a more comfortable shave without needing to be a fucking brain surgeon to shave

the big difference here is the cartridge blades bend around contours so you can apply a hair of pressure on a stubborn patch of hair and never get cut

with safety razor you accidentally apply pressure of any kind to your face you're cutting your face off

i don't care if i lack the skill or whatever other retarded meme you shills want to invent i have fsr better hand to eye coordination than almost anybody i know and i say they're not for me.

What is the advantage in buying a more expensive handle? Doesn't it make sense it's all in the blade?

Placebo shit for hipsters and don't let anyone tell your otherwise.

But if you like the idea, if you're into making your daily tools into personal trinkets, just get one.
Modern safety razor, your father's safety razor, your grandpa's straight razor all achieve the same effect in the end.

I just stopped shaving.
2 times a month at the barber shop to not look like a hobo is enough

I can't use this blind in the shower can I?
Dropped

>Better hand eye coordination
>Can't shave properly

The rhetoric is that a multi-blade cartridge causes ingrown hairs by design, since the first couple blades pull a hair out of the pore before the others cut it and it ends up too short.

No idea if that's true or not though.

Just a better feel in the hand.
My reasoning for getting something more expensive (~$100) was I'll probably keep it forever, so may as well get something that feel high quality.
I've had it for about 4 years now.

>he can't shave his face in a way that equates to brain surgery lol he'll never impress the ladies by pulling out a machete and shaving his face with it heheheh this always gets them guise make them seem like less of a man if they don't use our tools of autism works every time xD

Multiblades have a lower angle of attack, so they are doing less damage to the skin

Do DE razors rust if you leave them in the shower?

Also, I really like my $10 feather popular razor, would there be any sense in buying an all-metal one?
Is there even a decent all-metal butterfly razor?

Of course advertisers are going to look at worst case like that, but it's indisputable that Gillette cartridges for razors like the Mach 3 Turbo or whatever are way overpriced.

Fact is though, they do provide a much better shave than the disposable pack razors you're talking about. I fucking hate those things, and only use them if I have to like if I forget my razor while traveling. They irritate my face way worse and are difficult to get as smooth a shave as I want with. I have sensitive skin though.

Seriously though, safety razor blades are like $0.10 a piece and last just as long for a better shave.

>the only image of t.d not smiling like the joker
DELETE DISS

Gilette stopped manufacturing DE razor blades and handles in the US to avoid people holding on to the cheaper technology.

They do this every 10 years when their patents run out, though they can't really get away with it anymore now that everyone makes generics and the internet exists.
There's a reason mach 3-compatible generic cartiridges suddenly popped into existence

if this cuck lifted he'd look cool as fuck

Can I shave beards of any length with these? Gillette isn't the best I could get, I need something that doesn't get jammed by my neckbeard.

No they don't actually, the swiveling and flex and 5 blade garbage is garbage, I much prefer fixed (or at least only vertical swivel) and less blades.
Works better in less swipes and I can apply serious pressure without wondering if I'm pulling my razor at a direct 90° slice down my face.
that's why I have my ball joint fukkboi handle just sitting around attracting mold, the disposables are better

>shaving without cutting yourself like an idiot equates to brain surgery

In related news-- chewing gum and walking at the same time has been officially announced as the main event for the 2018 Winter Olympics, and MENSA's most difficult test for entry yet is reciting the alphabet backwards.

Marketing, and you have to go out of your way to find safety razors now.

I too remember when I was 15 and didn't have facial hair

Yes. When I finish shaving, I take my razor apart and clean and dry it.

It's cheaper. $10 razor + $20 blades and $10 soap has lasted me 2 years.

In other news, circus freak gawks at non circus freak. News at 11.

Maybe if you weren't a bum and actually shaved regularly you wouldn't have to take extreme measures to perform a trivial task.

idk man, it's easy as hell for me. I got a good shave literally my first time.

Maybe you're just a fuckin' retard.

whats the soap for? does that replace shaving cream? if so is one better for the skin

Yes, it replaces the shaving cream.

You just whisk it up into a foam with a brush before putting it on your face, instead of it coming out of a can. The brush also functions as a handy applicator so you don't get shaving cream all over your hands.

Technically speaking shaving cream replaced soap

doesn't this require a lot of time and ceremony?

I literally just squeeze the shaving foam onto my hands and smear it on as I go along.
I also do it in the shower.

I use that style of safety razer.

It's not as nice as modern razer heads, but it's WAY cheaper. Since I keep my beard grown out (use razer to trim up neck and such) it doesn't get used much anyways.

Not really. I mean, it's more time consuming that squirting a wad of barbasol into your hand and smearing it across your face, but not much.

You can keep using whatever shaving foam you use now with a safety razor if you want. You could use a shaving soap and brush with a cartridge razor. Most people just choose to switch both at the same time.

Turn on tap
Wet brush
Swirl it in the soap for like, 5 seconds
Apply to face

>I also do it in the shower.
Then you can just shave without it, honestly.

I use a safety razor and havent applied soap in years. I just run steaming hot water from the tap and keep the blade wet and hot. Doesnt give me any irritation.

One way requires you maintain a precise angle and distance from your face with the consequences of being off by less than a millimeter for a split second results in a nast gash on your face

the other requires paying almost no attention at all to the angle, distance or pressure being applied nor does it require any autismal face stretching or relathering with multiple passes

hmmm hmmmm maybe it's just me or maybe you're a mega autist shill

>shaving with water
What the fuck are you high on, I learned at an early age that unless there's shaving cream or at least spare hair conditioner you just shouldn't even shave

>without needing to be a fucking brain surgeon to shave
I'm genuinely afraid of the fact that you may own and operate a vehicle.

You can use either, but I prefer soap.
Get the soap that comes in a bowl, wet the brush and shake off excess, whisk it on top of the soap, apply to face, put lid back on soap. Takes about 20 seconds of whipping, and you get the consistency however you like it.
It's better to get the stuff in the bowl, because if you whip too much, you can reuse it later.
The hardest part is getting the right soap to water ratio, but you get use to it.

keep dodging retard

Nice hyperbole

Guess I've just got tough skin.

Dodging what?
That you can't shave without cutting your face open?

A continuous stream of hot water running down your face is just as good as spare hair conditioner.

right i suddenly am incapable of shaving my face at all if i won't shave my face the way you do. keep dodging retard. i know these bumps help your online bath supply store faggot

>With safety razors I changed the blade every shave because if I didn't it could skip on a patch of hair from being slightly dull and this tiny skip would cut my face no matter how little pressure applied. This also forced me to always buy the most expensive sharpest ones. The cheaper ones would rape my face even harder.

You said it yourself.
Alternatively, if that isn't you, you're still somehow under the impression that shaving with a DE is somehow complicated.
I think you're just an idiot.

>Precise angle and distance
>Deviating for even a split second will lacerate your face

Total bullshit. Where do you come up with this crap? Have you even ever used one you dumb nigger? It's the easiest shit in the world. I've never cut myself, and I'm not any more careful than I was with a cartridge razor. The only way I can see cutting yourself easily is if you moved it sideways across your skin.

My cheap $20 safety razor shaves just fine with about a ~20-30 degree margin of error on angle, and you don't have to maintain "distance". You just press it against your face and drag. It's actually not any harder at all.

If we were talking about straight razors, maybe you would have a point. That said, I've gotten straight razor shaves from barbers that were pretty obviously new to the job and pretty clumsy and still never even got cut.

I think you're just a fucking faggot, kid.

Old safety razors are great. Blades are dirt cheap, they work great, actually give a nice shave without constantly getting clogged and crap.

10/10 never gonna use anything else (except a straight razor occasionally)

No it isn't.
You probably think shower sex is a good idea too

Well, you are incapable. Why can't you shave with a method that thousands of people have done for years?
Nothing wrong with safety razor, but there is something wrong with you.

what do all my bad/sensitive skin bros use? red bumps and ingrown hairs out the ass here

yea i said i use a cartridge, i get a perfect shave with it, cost me $15 a year because i'm not a mega autist

but somehow this means i can't shave at all oh right durrr it's like i really am talking to a petulant child

You need to wash your face at least once every day, exfoliate, and moisturize.

Doesn't matter how you're shaving if you have shit skincare habits.

For thousands of years, shaving was an occasion, and even well into the modern world daily shaving didn't become a widely normalized thing until relatively recently
If you can grow a beard that doesn't look like the pubic hair on the ideally-aged girl then you don't even need to shave more than a few times a month

I literally shaved my face under the showerhead sans cream for years and the only issue was slightly higher chance of razor burn, which was easily negated by not clawing at my face against the grain like an idiot.

>Shower sex
Fucking movies and porn deceived me. It's like sex in a car, I'd rather be in my comfy bed.

you mean a method that was ABANDONED because it's shit for all but shave enthusiasts. the retarded 9 blade cartridge came AFTER the fact people chose to move away from safety razor

fact is i get a perfectly good shave with a cartridfe and in the day and age of the internet the "expensive cartridge" meme fails there's cheap carts all over online.

there's literally no reason to use a safety razor beyond being a mega autist shill or a shaving enthusiast

if you can't find cheap carts online i sure as hell hope you aren't touching anything sharp

>but somehow this means i can't shave at all
No it means you're a fucking retard who can't shave with a DE
If you like carts then use them, who cares, but don't claim that you're anything but physically handicapped if you can't shave using a single blade razor without slicing your face apart.

>if you can't find cheap carts online i sure as hell hope you aren't touching anything sharp
I hope you aren't either, since you seem to cut yourself on them constantly

right me and virtually everyone we're all mentally handicapped for not wanting to waste time on chores. go with that one it really works xD

I use a $185 safety razor and only shave with the grain.

>shave with the grain
Only true plebs do this

>literally no reason
You're a hyperbolic moron, congrats.

I can shave just as quick with a safety razor as my old multiblade, yet the blades cost 12 cents. Enjoy blowing money on dumb shit. I've got a used car I'd like to sell you, it's a 91 civic for $20k. All the non-autists are buying them, so you should too, it's a good deal.

>red bumps
thas a fungal infection, do a better job at keeping your face clean when shaving it wont be as big an issue.

Your autism is showing

>says the guy too stupid to get a good shave with a cartridge and too technically inept to locate deals online

my carts cost $1 per they last a month and i get a great shave every time

just hopping into this thread

I used a meme safety razor for two years because yes, it's very cheap
Then I went back to a cartridge razor and it's a SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN SHAVE QUALITY AND COMFORT.

I really don't give a shit about the money. It's better. Plus TSA doesn't confiscate the blade every time I try to fly with it.
