Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Where's the porn though?

>tfw too poor to buy a X320

Where to cop those chink modded TPs without getting scammed?

Ayyy

You lucky motherfucker.

How much did you pay?

Fuck off with your porn links in OP

Too much, it was like $600. Almost cancelled because of how long it took that chink to make them.

OK /tpg/, I'm looking at a brand new, boxed and sealed X230 (IPS, i5, 4GB/500GB) for £300. Would love a non seamen stained chinkpad... Is this a fair price?

On the flip side you have one of the rarest ThinkPads in the world.

That's a good price but can you live with 1366x768

Well I know I want a X230, so yeah.

Go for it, great price.

Although the benefit of buying something like an X250 is 1080p + getting to jew Lenovo's warranty for new chargers, RAM and keyboards

Feeling like replacing my X220 this year, might buy a T470. TP Classic will be too expensive.

What could go wrong? I don't mind the new keyboard layout, though it is disappointing.

Any reason you want to go bigger, x270 looks legit? I'd go x1 carbon Gen5 tho, for the small footprint 14".

X270 uses an old as fuck chassis at this point, it's a recycled X240.

X1C looks fucking amazing but it's expensive and hard to repair. I guess the downsides of the T470 is the shitty 1080p IPS panel and only x2 NVMe.

t430s a best

>also doubles as a furnace

Just got my hands on an X220, I love it, the screen is so damn nice, I had an X61 before which I used as a daily machine till this day.
Still not quite sure what linux distro I'm going to dump on it, thinking about taking the leap with Gentoo just for the heck of it.

Anyway, I'm really satisfied.

>downgrading from 4:3 to 16:9
Sorry for your loss.

The only downside, I agree, I liked the 4:3.
What is the best 4:3 model anyway?
The X61 is pretty old and low-power to be honest.

Want a better screen in my x220, do I wait for that russian dude to make more 1080p kits or settle for a 1366x768 IPS screen?

T601F (aka Frankenpad).

4:3 T61 motherboard inside a T60p chassis (FlexView IPS).

ACTUAL THREAD

Same, I like the other unofficial thread DESU

>can T60 display be used on T23
No, far to new and way different pinout iirc. Even T60 to T4x screen compatibility is narrow without special software.

By far, probably not even close to the top 15 rarest ThinkPads
A uncommon mod yes, I wouldn't say its 'rare' though.

Very good price, I mean it is brand new! You may need a fresh new battery though, just sayin.
>tfw that new thinkpad metal smell sealed away

X1C2 and X1C3 were actually fairly easy to open and to replace the motherboard.
Just parts are expensive, and maybe fixing a broken touchscreen may be difficult because of the glass.

Best 4:3?
Modded T601p (T61 mobo) with maybe a Core 2 Extreme
Or X61 w/ T9300 (T9500 might of been an option) and a SXGA+ IPS display if you can mod the cable.

>By far, probably not even close to the top 15 rarest ThinkPads

What would they be?
I'm sure a few thousand Transnote and PowerPC models were made, the X320/330 numbers are probably in the hundreds?

What do you guys use the ExpressCard slot for?

egpu

USB 3.0 (T420)

but on a T420 the usb express cards are fucking shit, what brand\model are you using?

Random chinkshit card found on Amazon.
Might not be so good as the built in on a T430/etc., but sure is better than nothing.

how so?

If you mean the freezing it's solved by turning off a setting in the bios and if you mean not having native usb 3.0 speeds well yeah but it's still better than 2.0

>turning off a setting in the bios
what setting?

it better not be C-states, nigger

not the cpu ones but yep the pci ones, disable "pci express power management"

it rapes your battery you stupid shit

works4me

You told me soft rim was shit.

Fuck you /tpg/. Fuck you.

Led backlit t601f master race

>dat 4:3 slim bezel design

muh dick

Is it unusual for a T520 with i5-2520M to be idling at 55C? Fresh TIM application, too.

Sounds about right, laptops always run warmer than desktops.

>Sounds about right
not really, something's not right.

you fucked up the paste, the contact is shit, try again.

COMFY CLASSIC

MOAR

yes i'm idling at 44 with the i7 2640m and on a t420 which has a smaller heatsink

Is it possible to have a 4g lte wwan card in a x220? Does it need a custom bios?

Idling about 50 here after changing thermal paste.

What SSD do you use/recommend for your TP? Should I trust kingdian?

> (You)
>MOAR
Screen brightness is also very similar to my t530s 270nit display (excuse the poor calibration)

Ok I might of over exaggerated a bit.

X320/330 are still in production, so many examples can still be built to order and are available, and from I can tell, may be available for a year or two.

Though there are thousands of Transnotes and 800 Series Thinkpads made, how many of them survived I am not sure. Which is what I meant by rare, as in you can't really find them til they show up.

I burn the second inverter I got from them and I haven't modded since.

what GPU are you using and what CPU?

TO THE ANONS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH DRIFT

yo replace the nub. the profile is likely gone, making you push it harder than it was ever designed for. This is causing the drift. You get used to pushing it harder over time because of very slowly developing wear. especially if you got the lappy second hand, and the previous owner also used the trackpoint.

>Yfw you have to set your sensitivity settings back 70% after getting a new nub.

Can a x230 motherboard be transplanted into a x220?
Also is there a way to remove the sata 2 limit on msata drives in the x220 and x230?

no and no

Is there any news on the anniversary edition yet?
I've long retired my X301 and I want a thinkpad again. The surface book has shit linux support and I miss the trackpoint.

October

>never had any laptops
>never cared for them
>bought x200
>4 days using it, comfy as shit
>loving all of it
>now every single laptop I touch seem like a wobbly fragile piece of plastic shit, plus no trackpoint

I have fallen for /lit/, /ic/, /fit/, Sup Forums memes, but goddamn, thinkpad is the on the top3 memes I have fallen for, thanks g+tpg

Well I see you all in October

Any idea how we can get our hands on an X320 anyways? I was not aware of its existence but it seems like the absolute perfect laptop. I can wait for months for the chinese dude to make mine, I don't mind. Why Lenovo cannot make one of those, I do not know. It's like they hate money.

this is obviously thee only thinkpad anyone should own

I'm going to copy pasta this everytime some gook even mentions buying lel,no-vo's post **20 bullshit.

T460 owner here,

>Build quality
Alright compared to most laptops today
but absolute shit compared to the older (pre t420) thinkpads.
I've dropped my t460 2 times already, once on the edge with the battery.
This made one of the battery holding switches pop out and have the battery be losely held in place, and the screen slightly bent outwards because of malformed hinges.
Second time I dropped was game over, I pulled on a headphone cable and the laptop fell face down from a table about waist height.
This caused both hinges to break off the laptop, and the screen to eventually fail.
Compare this to my t40 which I have thrown multiple times across the room in fits of rage and still works perfectly.
The new thinkpad durability is shit.
>Keyboard
Even though all the nig/g/ers here complain about the new keyboard being the worst thing about the new thinkpads,
its actually quite good, and I would say much better for typing than the old t40 keyboard.
The t460 keyboard has much more clicker and responsive than the t40 keyboard,
and the spaced out keys give me much less mis-typed words.
The only thing that is better on the pre-t420 keyboards are the layout,
which is very important because everyone on Sup Forums is a professional video editor
that uses millions of key-shortcuts that all use the home, end, insert, and delete buttons.
>Screen
T460 screen was superb, I have the model which had the 1080p IPS display.
Screen was bright, colors were great, and the resolution was sharp.
However, all this does not matter if the screen is not attached to the computer anymore from a fall off a table.
There are older thinkpads that have screens that are on par (x220 IPS display)
or even better (t60 Boe-Hydis AFFS display) than the newer thinkpads.

(Continued)

>Linux Support
Despite what everyone tells you, absolute shit.
Yeah, wifi drivers will work out of the box on even the most difficult of distros (Gentoo),
and graphics drivers too (no shit its intel HD graphics).
However, there are so many other fucking problems with linux on this shit.
The clit mouse is as hard as dehydrated shit to get working on.
You have to fuck around in the xorg.conf for a couple of hours with joystick variables to get the trackpoint to work.
And because of the oversized trackpad for nigger fingers, you have to disable it.
But guess what dipshit, even after you disable the trackpad,
if you put your palm on the trackpad while using the trackpoint like a normal person,
the trackpoint will zig zag like a shit headed fuck high on ASSSSSS.
So, you have to arch your hand like a fucking spider to use the trackpoint.

In short, the new thinkpad is as bad as Sup Forumsers say on /tpg/, but not for the reasons they say.
Go get yourself a x220 or build yourself a t601f so you can be the most badass fucking shit in this thread,
and stay clear of the lenovo chinkshit chicken-shit bullshit.
Also by buying gook-no-vo's horseshit your supporting their new thinkpad design,
if every nig/g/er on this board stop buying this shit, lenovo might make a retro thinkpad to appease us and get our shekels again.

VERY nice user. Got Franken Parts and an X60s on the way right now

Used to have a 2720QM T420 + GTX 950, worked fine.

Is 113 euros too much for a X220 i5 2520m that is a bit beaten up? I'll have to get 8gb RAM (it comes with only 3GB) and a SSD.

What's with the chink jokes regarding Lenovo's recent lineup? Did the Chinese buy a majority stake in it or something?

Lenovo is a Chinese company, centered in china and manufactures in china.

Fuckin dumb nigger cattle.

1/10 for making me reply
this is obviously not a ThinkPad. the glossy screen alone disqualifies it as one

what exactly am i looking at?

chink mod that puts an XPS 13 display in an X220/X230

I need this in my life

Why wont a x230 motherboard fit in an x220? Its the exact same appearance as the x220 motherboard.

>Yoga bait
It might be recommended for the basic dumbshit who needs a touchscreen laptop, but otherwise it falls short out of a lot of things
>idgaf if you can play the newest (read non intensive) games at low to medium settings.

What are you going to do?

Eh.
Its just a literally a term used by people who never had IBM ThinkPad with GPU issues.

There's a chink and some reddit guy(kind of like an ambassdor for to sell in us) that share a facebook page called "Lcdfans"

They made me pay through like a google doc, but he uses paypal. It was kind of sketchy, but I eventually ended up getting mine so w/e. They also sell x62 and they're working on a T70

should i buy a t60 even though i have a current year model laptop. what would be the benefit over my $1000 machine?

Toss a minimal OS on there and you have a light media (download, not stream) and development pkaybox. You probably don't want to install unstable nightly releases of shut you use and develope, so it's nice to have a cheap burner instead.
Plus if you want to actually anonymize yourself you can get libreboot etc.

Is X250 the first 12" with a 1080p screen? Thanks.

No. Checking specs on earlier models isn't hard user.
thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X240

if these old thinkpads didn't smell like sweaty balls because of the rubber rails holding the storage drives, i'd buy one.

Thanks what's the the diff between the older style keyboard on say a x230 and island key style on the x240?

Sorry I meant x220. I see x230 has island keys as well.

Can anyone recommend a good Canadian refurbisher or reseller?

It's like a couple bucks to replace them anyway, and with clever use of some Black Ice you could could just cover the smell up with the FRESH until it goes away.

Yeah the x230's keyboard is much the same as the x240, though it can still swap in an x220 keyboard unlike the x240 (as far as I know)

The main practical difference between classic and chicklet keyboards is just the layout. Up to you which you prefer, though I personally feel like you're better off making good use of key combinations on both to save moving your hands as much. Other than that you probably won't notice much difference, they're both pretty good.

Thanks. Any recommended models i can get for less then 100 with decent specs?

Nah not really, haven't done too much research on the T60/Core2Duos/ultra-cheap thinkpads honestly. Check out ThinkWiki or other buying guides; do some homework, since you'll likely spend some time digging for a good one if you aren't willing to repair.

wiki.installgentoo.com has an article on thinkpads.

Thanks man

If you go from $100 to $150 you will go from getting like a t60 or maybe a beat up t400 to a really nice t420 with dgpu

...

he had to get a computer after the neighbor kid destroyed his memoir.

>t420 with dgpu
don't

i5 vs i7 for an x230?

Any reason not to shove Debian onto my T500?

God I hope he spanked the little fucker good and then beat up his irresponsible fat dad or something.

Is W701 a good semi-portable desktop replacement for $300?
Mostly want a decent display quality at 15-17"

pretty much no reason not to.
I mean if the wifi & trackpad driver work, then pretty much everything else will be a breeze.

>decent specs
It will be lucky if you get a 2nd gen i5 laptop with a hard drive, AC adapter and 70% or better hard drive for under $100 shipped.

barebone i5 third gens go for $65 before shipping, all others below that are a big fucking risk for the most part

I don't mind the smell, but I kinda like the smell of old trinitrons and dead computer equipment of the 80's.
Also I am homosex as well.

>the trackpoint is hard as fuck to set up
worked for me on x250
>oversized trackpad have to disable
palm rejection works for me

First off, $300 is a good price for a W701 if you want something with a digitizer or have nostalgia goggles
otherwise, $280 SHOULD get you a decent i7 15" laptop with a better GPU & CPU, even if it is an i5....

I've yet to get a W701, but given HP had IPS displays on 87xx and later... tough call to say.
though I am not one to talk since I am going to sell a 8740w for $340 soon. (x

don't bother replying to that retard. he's been posting this copypasta for quite some time

The performance difference isn't much between them, they're both still same generation dual cores. Imo if you can find an i5 with a noticibally lower price than the i7, grab the i5.
