If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following: 0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine. 1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything. 2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS. 3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

This is a troll thread and not an actual /fglt/. Go away.

whats the point of terryfagging at /fglt/?

I would suggest you to leave.

This isn't /fglt/.

I'm using Arch Linux, just sayin'.

Is Tiny Core Linux a decent server alternative to Debian? Considering it has a smaller attack surface?

If you want to attack /faglet/ you should give every thread both "tags", so put fglt/faglet in the header I'm sick of how this general became politicised and taken over by stallmans zombies. Fuck it, let it burn and something better rise out of the ashes. Remember it was called /flt/ to start with before these cunts came in here and spoiled it. The archive will show this.

Installing Elementary OS actually just to see how it looks like
Jeremiah Garcia
This. Last time i mentioned how fglt started off well and descended into Sup Forums level horseshit, the best justification i got back as to why it was filled with shills, trolls and shitposters was"its so much better now, it used to recommend non free software". Sup Forums has gone to shit over the past couple of years
Juan Rogers
I get paid by redhat to shill GNOME, systemd and other projects across the web reddit/Sup Forums/ycombinator mostly. I thought you guys should know AMA
Jack Murphy
neo Sup Forums pls go
Bentley Green
I like systemd and GNOME 2bh. GNOME has the best wayland support currently.
I kinda hate how KDE is losing configurability these days so I am not using KDE anymore.
Andrew Jenkins
>Installing Elementary OS actually just to see how it looks like Why would you need to install it isn't it a live ISO? Also virtualbox.
Easton Morgan
Once you've installed can you report the starting memory usage that screenfetch shows? I want to know how much it differs from Unity and GNOME given the recent Ubuntu news.
Charles Collins
flt is a very new thread, pretending to be "oldfag" over flt/fglt says how new you are actually I like native performance. I can guarantee that it takes less memory than Unity
Joshua Mitchell
Same. I know that feel bro. Plasma is kind of a disappointment. Thank god we have GNOME to save us.
Gabriel Evans
it's comfy famalam
Cameron Perez
What made me more interested in GNOME is that I've been hearing "rumors" that GNOME shell is going to be rewritten in Rust.

Anyone know of a good download manager available on OpenSUSE repos? Preferably something lightweight but able to download all files or images in an entire page just when you feed the original link, like JDownloader. uGet is nice but I couldn't get it to do that.
John Morales
Pretty sure modern browsers have good download managers built right in
Benjamin Smith
/flt/ was normie tier cancer >reddit links >shitty apps guy >recommended distro: linux mint
You should be thankful to the guys who pushed the quality of this thread with great pasta, useful informations and help newcomers every day instead of spouting ">lelele toejam commie jew pedo" 4gag crap.
Ethan Martinez
what distro should I use? I hate systemd, and am beginning to feel like the Arch developers are lazy and incompetent. I like pacman and the rolling release aspect. I'd use void but I love the AUR's huge amount of packages (despite a ton of them being terrible packages, abandoned or otherwise broken) to install stuff like mopidy-spotify and themes/fonts that aren't on Void.
Nolan White
Anyone else think it's strange that pantheon is in the arch repos?
David Wood
Why would it be strange?
John King
>Lincucks BTFO
Benjamin Hughes
But can you get stuff like streaming videos that the page doesn't offer for download and also don't have links in the elements section, like JDownloader can?
Hudson King
No, it won't. It's going to use Vulkan for rendering.
Ian Jenkins
videodownloadhelper and youtube-dl
Not sure downloading stream videos is the best idea. Always torrent videos.
William Ross
No rare camgirl recordings available on pornolab, m80
Anyway, thanks, I have youtube-dl but never tried using it this way
Jeremiah Scott
Just installed linux for the first time, what are some must have programs?
Nicholas Butler
>saving camgirl recording What do you use your PC for?
Cameron Roberts
so the endless systemd memes, constant Terry Davis shitposting, the GNOME/Redhat shilling and the rest of the bollocks that makes its way into this thread, you wouldn't consider any of that to be similar to the kind of "4gag crap" that goes on elsewhere?
And you give off about reddit links, but reddit has been slowly taking the decent Sup Forums posters for several years now. For some reason people who justify the the fall in quality of this thread seem to think a new general finding its way(which was started off by a beginner linux user so keep that in mind, it was as much a learning process on linux for him as it was for the thread) and improving over time as the same as a cancerous, reddit-esque meme tier thread

mpv - video player, you can play video from youtube with it. st - simple terminal, supports wayland, fast cute terminal. tmux - terminal multiplexer, very very useful, you don't need to open multiple terminals, just use tmux. rtorrent - best torrent client, supports magnet links, you can run it in tmux.
Asher Long
Still it would be nice to know the precise usage to be able to compare

See this is why I refrain from suggesting apps by name. >mpv Considering the fact that he just installed Linux there is a chance that he's new. Bare Mpv is unintuitive and it has 0 justifications for having no control panel I suggest SMPLayer, it uses MPV in the back-end and has a decent control center >st No real use for st exists. Everyone has his favourite terminal, mine is Terminix: you can easily tile, sync stdin, and do many other stuff easily in it >tmux Use a terminal that has multiplexer built in, no need for tmux and it's autistic key shortcuts >rtorrent No, as I said about MPV, setting up rtorrent is plain autistic. Just use Transmission or QBittorrent
Jonathan Morris
how so?
Adam Barnes
No disagreement here
Michael Fisher
Do you get native resolution in TTYs with the proprietary Nvidia drivers nowadays?
Angel Flores
Is arch good or is it a meme?
Jacob Turner
You're dividing the community with this GNUism.
Carter Bell
Yes, because there are so many programs that ship with both a Qt and GTK front-end that you can compare. Kill yourself.
Jeremiah King
Hi, can anybody help me with dual boot?
Every time I try to install Debian, my windows get lost. On reboot, grub appears, but it has only debian available for boot.
During the installation, it always says "windows found, safe to install grub on master boot record"
What am I doing wrong? How do I make it so that I can choose my os when booting?
Levi Cooper
When we ask people to say “GNU/Linux”, we are not dividing people. We are asking them to give the GNU Project credit for the GNU operating system. This does not criticize anyone or push anyone away.
However, there are people who do not like our saying this. Sometimes those people push us away in response. On occasion they are so rude that one wonders if they are intentionally trying to intimidate us into silence. It doesn't silence us, but it does tend to divide the community, so we hope you can convince them to stop.
However, this is only a secondary cause of division in our community. The largest division in the community is between people who appreciate free software as a social and ethical issue and consider proprietary software a social problem (supporters of the free software movement), and those who cite only practical benefits and present free software only as an efficient development model (the open source movement).
This disagreement is not just a matter of names—it is a matter of differing basic values. It is essential for the community to see and think about this disagreement. The names “free software” and “open source” are the banners of the two positions. See Why Open Source misses the point of Free Software.
The disagreement over values partially aligns with the amount of attention people pay to the GNU Project's role in our community. People who value freedom are more likely to call the system “GNU/Linux”, and people who learn that the system is “GNU/Linux” are more likely to pay attention to our philosophical arguments for freedom and community (which is why the choice of name for the system makes a real difference for society). However, the disagreement would probably exist even if everyone knew the system's real origin and its proper name, because the issue is a real one. It can only go away if we who value freedom either persuade everyone (which won't be easy) or are defeated entirely (let's hope not).
Anthony Rivera
>smplayer Ok, it uses mpv. >terminix If i close terminal all stuff in it closed also, it doesn't happen if you were using tmux, you can always go back to closed session. rtorrent just works, transmission have good CLI.

It's good. Good package manager, recent versions of software.
Charles King
Is arch still decent? Never ran into much trouble when I used it, aside from when I forgot to update for 3 Months.
Leo Diaz
what distro should I use? I'm a pretty advanced user but havent used gnu/linux for a while, and can easily configure stuff myself and would actually prefer it. I'd like a pretty minimal installation. I like simplicity, so something without complex, bloated init systems and other software like systemd would be nice. I also want something with a lot of software like the aur. Should I just try arch?
Charles Sullivan
If you want bleeding edge updates, then yes.
If you want well tested updates with minimal chance of breaking, then no.
The AUR is great, though.
Andrew James
Read EFISTUB article first.
Christian Moore
Yes, because a casual user needs programs he launched in his terminal emulator to keep running that long.
Jace Martin
Arch or Debian, but basically any distro which provides a netinstall should be good enough to set up something lightweight manually.
Evan Jenkins
You should try Gentoo GNU/Linux nomultilib + any wayland environment.
Josiah Taylor

Normal people ignore the noise and only post replies to questions or when calling out idiots for having retarded opinions about software or distributions in general.

How easy is it to get the newest kernels on Debian? I basically need 4.9 or 4.10 because older kernels don't work with hibernation on my new laptop.

Terry calls everyone niggers, it's a genetic slur he's completely removed race from.
Wyatt Foster
That's actually more than Unity but still way better than GNOME and KDE Ayy fuck off, divisive Jew cunt
Brody Evans
Debian sid has 4.9 but as the other user said, you can always compile your own. The official kernel comes with a make deb-pkg target which conveniently produces proper packages that fully integrate and automatically update Grub for instance. But compiling manually works just as well. Debian is flexible in that regard.
Lincoln Sanchez
I didn't put emphasis on the fact that he calls everyone niggers. I put emphasis on the fact that he calls people void of morals while he himself has nothing like it
Did you even follow the conversation that led me to post that memory usage?
Elijah Lopez
P.S. You can selectively allow packages from different Debian distributions, like a sid kernel on a testing system. This can cause complications but it should not go unmentioned. It's called "Apt Pinning". jaqque.sbih.org/kplug/apt-pinning.html
