This. There is no solid DE currently on Linux. Gnome is horrible, it lags and tries to hard to be "simple and intuitive". Gnome 2 was better. KDE is possibly best choice right now, there are some minor quirks but overall it's a lot more useful compared to Gnome. XFCE has compositing problems and seems slow overall, but that could just be driver problems or some settings that I might have missed. Other environments are just forks of main projects which inherit all problems from upstream.
Best thing to do now is to roll your own environment. With window managers like openbox, fluxbox, i3, dwm and fvwm you can get a lot more usable and responsive desktop. Downside is that you have to rtfm and spend time configuring them. DIY will be only way to escape from this madness, at least Linux allows you to run whatever you want.
