Please stay on Windows.

It seems like you're trying to avoid providing good reasons why switching to Linux would be better.

>implying Linux needs reasons for switching to
>implying Linux needs to prove itself
It's easier to give reasons why you want to stick with Windows 7. Go ahead, I could use a laugh.

1. windows
2. sucks
3 .sucks
4 . a lot
5. of dicks

see

1. More stable.
2. Supports more hardware.
3. Better filesystems for no data-corruption (ZFS, BTRFS [don't use raid6])
4. Tells you what went wrong.
5. Security.

Start with Ubuntu Mate or kubuntu. Work your way to Gentoo Hardened if you want even more security.

>WAA I WANT TO BE SPOONFEEDED
As I said Rajesh, please stay on Windows

0. freedom of choice
1. customization
2. secure
3. proper software/package management
4. you're in control of the operating system, not the other way around

1. If you conflate effort for accomplishment, wading through Linux's poor design choices will be right up your alley
2. Nobody uses Linux, which means you can feel special for being different
3, By getting there first you can call all later Linux adopters idiots as they ask for help on things you've already learned.
4. By ignoring all the downsides and focusing solely on the upsides (bonus points for only hypothetical upsides), you can convince yourself that the tools you have are superior to the Windows counterparts.
5. Linux's lack of capabilities means you can avoid unnecessary entanglements with a simple, "Why would anybody ever want to do X?"

Welcome to Sup Forums Ranjeet! Having fun programming in Java, or whatever your kind does?

If you have no reason to switch, others giving you reasons won't help. Stay with windows, because you will come back month later complaining about usual things people complain on here when they are not ready for Linux

My Linux distro doesn't support Java. Why would anybody need that?

Linux is pure bliss, that feeling of enlightenment when using it. Knowing that you are superior to others in every single aspect of life. Being aware that you are part of the winning team, special and unique in all ways imaginable.

POO IN THE LOO

Free. Privacy. Easy to download software, which is also all free.

It's not outdated and riddled with malware.

Well there's really no need to unless you want to.
Answer the following questions and I'll determine if any GNU/Linux distro is right for you
>Are you afraid of the Command Line?

>Has Windows worked with no (major) problems so far?

>Are you gaming?

>Are you writing code?

>User friendliness or tons of instruction manuals?

>Are you afraid of the Command Line?
Kinda
>Has Windows worked with no (major) problems so far?
Yes
>Are you gaming?
Yes
>Are you writing code?
Yes
>User friendliness or tons of instruction manuals?
I don't really need tons of instruction manuals but user friendliness is nice.

> Supports more hardware
XD

Your result would be a Win 7 and Ubuntu dualboot.
Try a Live USB before going full in.
I recommend Xubuntu with pic related window manager settings.

Wish this shithole was moderated properly.

If you're writting C/C++ or Python, and you don't want to use VS, (or just want to learn), then go. I recomend Debian with Gnome (and plugins)

Not only there are major problems with GPU, there also major problems with smartphones, bluethooth devices, etc...
Having a generic driver for everything doesn't really mean it is supported.

also to add to my previous post
Windows is not bad for developing by any means but it's not friendly and development frequently is more of a headache on Windows.

GNU/Linux is actually a lot comfier for web browsing and coding but there aren't many games to play on there. Plus if you use a laptop you may face some issues with broadcom drivers that require you to manually download and enable them.

if you have interest in programming or building a server, learning linux is a good investment. Yet for desktop in general (office but no latex, excel or but not R) windows is good.

The thing is that many problems the desktop face can be better solved by a specialized compiler + language combo. Examples are LaTeX for word processing, R / python for excel tables, sqlite for office access and (g)awk for report processing.

Gee I wonder how the 20 daily threads per day about MicroPOO/Apple/Nvidia/AMD/Intel get to stay?

got new laptop
install debian
update / upgrade
everything works. wifi works, sound works, network works etc...
battery life is good, thanks tlp
everything is smooth
took me 30 minutes

had to go back to windows for work
install win7
no wifi drivers, have to find a cable to connect directly
browse a shitty website to find all the drivers that I need
windows update is slow as hell
ended by installing bloat manufacturer updater so everything is finally installed
battery life is shit
system is slower
took me 2 hours and several reboots

all of that just so I can share .ai .docx .xlsx .pptx with boss and colleagues...

1. Windows 7 mainstream support ended on January 13, 2015
2. Windows 7 extended support ends on January 14, 2020
3. Windows 7 no longer supports the latest hardware
4. Continued use of Windows encourages developers to target obsolete single-platform APIs
5. Legacy Windows was nice, but its over now and time to move on to something better for the good of the PC

>new laptop
>uses 2009 os
no shit, if you installed windows 10, everything would work

>security

>every Android phone.png

>willingly installing a botnet

Like your router isn't one anyway.

Not him, but I had to downgrade to Win7 becouse of driver problems. (Update meant sure crash when booting, and win10 updates quite frequently).

are you connected to the internet or using a mobile phone?

Switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10 instead.

>1. Security updates
>2. Drivers written by the companies who make the devices they're for and consider Windows their primary target.
>3. Powershell+.NET is a better scripting environment than Bash.
>4. 20+ years of binary compatibility and the only OS to bundle skeleton versions of previous kernels into the current OS on-demand for running legacy software.
>5. Zero chance of bricking your hard-drive because you accidentally deleted something or messed up your GRUB or fstab settings.

Don't answer, it's a trick question.

>Gee I wonder who is behind this post.

>if you installed windows 10

Oh boy, you sure love to have your ass full of cum don't you?

Never going to happen. I will stay with 7 until it dies.

>linux
>easier to download software than windows

I can smell the stink of curry from here.

it's not microsoft.
it mostly works.
something new.

linux, let say debian: open terminal, use apt, type in the name of what you want, install.
Even better and easier with arch. Might need to add a source but okay let's keep that.

windows: I need x soft. Browse the web, find the website, download .exe, click next next next next next. You were not focused. You just installed the bing bar. Congrats. Rince and Repeat.

Let's say you are using several softs.
Linux: update then upgrade, good to go. Don't want to update, no need.
Windows: every piece of shit soft will remember you to download the new version with a popup. Good luck updating everything in one go in a few minutes.

Look at this retard and laugh. He doesn't even read the wikileaks dumps lmao

An awesome thread had to die for this.

What thread and why didn't you bump it?

Better file system, and then lists a caveat... Fuck you Linux people are retarded. ZFS is still a hobby in Linux and BRTFS is hardly even finished. Linux people are retards who are jumping into new concepts before they are close to being finished.

>2. Supports more hardware.
LOL, no.

It doesn't come close to supporting more modern consumer hardware.

1. Better filesystems, lots of choice for the task at hand
2. Actual security updates, values your privacy
3. No piracy bullshit to deal with. Free now and forever.
4. Drivers for every piece of hardware out there on new kernels and it just keeps expanding.
5. Choice, so much choice. Seriously, XFCE is awesome for creating your own work space that streamlines how you interact with your machine.

Which devices did you have trouble with?
Only ever seen certain brands of soundcard not work.

File systems are important to how the machine works and data is handled. Hell, Antergos has a root ZFS installer that works just fine.
Or even just XFS, fast with no bells and whistles, easily superior to both EXT4 & NTFS.
Windows neglects this front. Hard. Watch what happens when you try to move 500K

>1. Better filesystems
lol wat, useless
>2. Actual security updates, values your privacy
I have common sense and Im not a pedo
>3. No piracy bullshit to deal with. Free now and forever.
Win7, all for free.
>4. Drivers for every piece of hardware out there on new kernels and it just keeps expanding.
every single piece of hardware worked completely fine.
>5. Choice, so much choice

This

I fought with a Wifi AC dongle. I could also never get the hot keys on a huion tablet to work, though I did eventually get the stylus working.

no more cock in your ass

>no more cock in your ass
fuck off pedophile

>lol wat, useless
Name me the last time a hard drive failure has moderately inconvenienced you.
I sure can't.

>Win7, all for free.
Free for now. But it will never get updates or expand beyond current capabilities. The OS will one day die when our tech exceeds it's license and functional limitations.
You'll wish you had found something equivalent sooner.

>every single piece of hardware worked completely fine.
Exactly, you can plug in a GTX 1070 and it works fine with either nouveau or prop nvidia right off the bat.
Not to mention you can also pull from one system and stick it into another and the generic drivers switch to the tune of your new machine instead of stalling permanently until a reinstall.

3. and 5. are the only valid argumenzs

>Name me the last time a hard drive failure has moderately inconvenienced you.
NEVER, not even meme'ing
>Free for now. But it will never get updates or expand beyond current capabilities
lmao, are u trolling?
>Exactly
U cant even refute

Seriously, unless ur a paranoid pedophile, theres no reason at all to use lolinux

You must be 18 to post here, read the rules.

>theres no reason at all to use lolinux
for the average person. I use it on old laptops like my Latitude 2120 to give them life which windows can't do

3 posts later, not a single real reason
no wonder the "give me a reason to use linux" posts are fucking endless

...

4 posts and counting

>i'm somehow entitled to a proper answer as a result of low quality shitpost.

why do wintards think win7 is safe?
all the botnet has been backported to it

AHAHAHAHAHAHHA

Fortunately this is changing. Package management is now built into power shell allowing the user to install modules from private repos or psgallery. Of course this does not yet cover every use case, but it does help with general purpose command line tasks. If whatever you need isn't available, WSL is there as well. Now with the creators update, enhancements have been made to WSL fixing the network issues that it had before.

OP here, I've actually used Debian before, really the only people I had with it was I had trouble with installing and running things because I'm so used to using Windows, it was impossible to get Codeblocks to run.

All of the games I play are old or really old and they have linux support, and even some of the newer games I play have linux support, so playing games isn't really much of an issue.

I'm going to try to use Debian for the third time later next month once I get my external hard drive because sacrificing porn isn't for some USB space is pretty bad.

Why debian?
Ubuntu is an easier desktop experience imho.

>people
*problem

I did test Ubuntu but then decided on Debian, I see people calling it shit/"SJW" on Sup Forums lately though, don't really know what that's about.

From debian you can stole ubuntu packges, so you can have pretty much everything ubuntu has. Except that debian is not bloated like Ubuntu and I also find it more stable. (And you can select you DM on installation).

Make sure you use gnome, and make sure to install some good gnome addons. I have "Hide taskbar", "Close window when clicking the middle mouse button", "Side deck (cool change disktop by scrolling)", and some more. Also on any Linux distro I have I configure the keys Ctrl+Alt+K for xkill, Ctrl+Alt+T for open terminal, and Ctrl+Alt+M for the Manager. Good luck.

Debian is a blend of home user and production environment.
Old as fuck but gets patches to make sure it keeps behaving exactly as it does for the next 4 years.

Ignore them.
In the interest of the meritocracy they flout... Good software is good software.

You could try Linux Mint. lets you install BOTH ubuntu and debian packages. Can get you into trouble if you don't realize this going in.

Id advise against mint. Its probably improved since ive used it but its desktop metapackage caused a clusterfuck in the 14 days and ive not trusted it since. Ubuntu and debians stability and ubiquity trumps Mint.

>file system is useless
Wintoddlers, everyone

>look my Sup Forums pedo friends!!! I can use multiple file systems!!!
Why?
>w-waht? i-its better!!! yeah! m-muh privacy!!!! s-security!!!! y-yeahhhhh....i guess....
