Alt+Esc puts the active window behind all other windows.
Alt+Shift+Tab
Some people don't even know you can do it and think the left-pointing arrow on the key is just for show.
win+L locks the screen when your girlfriend walks in
>TIL (today I learned) that F6 in chrome takes you to the address bar (all this time I've been using CTRL+L).
Was using F6 for ages. Then sometime I had to use firefox (iirc) and F6 does not work on firefox. So I got used to ctrl+l. Now I am only using ctrl+L
>all this time I've been using CTRL+L
That's the usual way of getting to the address bar. It's faster and more convenient than reaching up to the function keys.
It works just fine, what are you on about?
emacs else die
I learned alt+d a long time ago. It's super convenient but some websites don't let it work, or flash or something. I don't know - I've encountered circumstances where it didn't work and I was super pissed.
ctrl+shift+escape opens task manager directly instead of that intermediary screen.
In all web browsers you can middle click a tab to close it, and middle click a link to open that link in a new tab.
In windows you can middle click a program on the taskbar to open an additional instance of that program
f6 works in firefox
f6 works on firefox now.
back and forth, forever
If you work phone support and nobody knows what operating system they are using and nobody can describe what the start menu looks like because they don't know what that is:
In windows 8 the usual point and click path to system information has changed but on every version of windows you can press win+pause/break to pull it up.
CTRL+W will save you some embarrassment.
ggdGZZ
I prefer alt+d
>mfw I bound close and restore tab to my mouse's two buttons behind the scroll wheel
You can close windows by double clicking on their upper left corner.
>windows+pause/break
Oh man thats handy
...
This works on any windows version above 3.1
Ctrl+A and Ctrl+E for moving the cursor to the beginning/end of the line
Ctrl+Shift+Eject for turning the screen off
Cmd+R to refresh
Win + R
t: - enter
qui - enter (porn archive called "quicksave")
Alt + m
password - enter
double click on the mounted TrueCrypt archive
Done
Thanks FAlVl, ginna try those out!
>redo alt itsn't ctrl+shift+z
I HELPED YOU
> Win+X
opens up the handy menu that you can also access by right-clicking the start button.
Then I usually continue with
> i
nowadays for PowerShell. Previously it was C for Command Prompt.
Also useful one:
> alt + print screen
takes the screenshot of the active window only.
CTRL+E inside of Firefox does the same as F6/CTR+L.
CTRL + Z cause it can undo my mistakes
>not my real life mistakes though
Win + Pause
>Win+Left or Right
Docks focused window on a half of the screen.
>Win+Shift+Left or Right
Moves focused window between monitors. Really useful if a fullscreen program becomes unresponsive and task manager opens behind it.
;_;
What the fuck, ctrl+L is obviously superior. The time wasted for pressing two reachable keys instead of one is much smaller than the time to move your hand to the F keys and back.
backspace to go back a page in a browser
win+an arrow key to snap windows in various ways
only recently learned alt+spacebar and using "move" lets you move a window with the arrow keys
unfortunately you seem to have to left click in order to get the window's new position to stick, but it's great for when the titlebar is off screen due to certain programs not respecting taskbar placement
Redo should be Ctrl+Shift+Z. It pisses me off so much when I'm using Word and I try to redo except it actually removes the formatting of what I have selected.
Vi bindings for shell, browser and editors. Extremely fast everything like the wind.
Win+R
L Alt+Enter
ALT+F4 to enable cheat mode in practically any game is neat.
>Sup Forums humour
Cap+f, Cap+b, Cap+n, Cap+p, Cap+e, Cap+a
CTRL+SHIFT+T
Re-open that porn you closed in haste because someone came round the corner in the library.
))((
>CTRL+SHIFT+T
>Re-open that porn you closed in haste because someone came round the corner in the library.
Custom shortcut? On my system that opens the terminal.
it's default in firefox atleast
And Chrome and IE. Undo tab close.
ctrl+tab
>next tab in FF
ctrl+F5
>clear cache / reload page
ctrl + drag tab to new space
>clone tab including data you've input into forms
Ctrl+backspace
ESC : q ! Enter
To quit that weird text editor when I accidentally open it
Winkey+number opens up the program in specific order on your taskbar
Win+M to minimize
Ctrl+Shift+N to create a new folder in the directory you're in.
Hold Alt and use Up*, left, right to navigate in folders in a similar way to back and forward. *Up is like the old Up button in XP and older.
Ctrl+Shift+Tab is better if you have a lot open.
Knew all these and I keep telling people about it but they never learn and they still open links without using tabs.
It gave me an insight that I have an OCD for things I didn't know.
It's an embarrassing high number of people on this site that use the snipping tool for some reason.
Alt+D is address bar, Ctrl+E is search bar.
Kinda big difference though.
Win+Down and up to make window fullscreen (not the same as F11)
>mfw I tried this and it oppens Cinnamon Debugger
Win+Left/right navigates window through monitors
I use snipping tool because I want a specific region selected, is there a shortcut for this?
Yes, it's called winkey+pa..., paste, crop ctr+s
Double clicking the icon in a window's title bar makes it do a neat animation
Windows + printscreen auto saves it in your pictures library
Opening up paint or photoshop or whatever is way more effort than snipping tool. Thanks anyway though
Browser:
Ctrl+T opens new tab
Ctrl+W closes tab
Ctrl+Tab goes to next tab
Ctrl+Shift+Tab goes to previous tab
Ctrl+Shift+T re-opens a tab you previously closed
clicking on a link with your mousewheel (middle button) opens it in a new tab
clicking anywhere in a tab with middle button closes the tab, so you don't have to click that tiny X
Windows:
Ctrl+Shift+Esc directly opens Task Manager
Win+E opens the file manager (Explorer)
Win+Pause lets you quickly check the specs on someone else's computer
Ctrl+Backspace deletes the entire previous word instead of just one character
Ctrl+Del deletes the entire next word instead of just one character
Alt+Printscreen screenshots only the currently active window instead of the entire desktop
Win+ArrowKeys let you minimize, window, maximize, and snap a window (win+right on one program and win+left on another will show them side by side, perfect for reading PDF and writing for example)
Ctrl+Delete on a file to delete it permanently, without it going to the recycle bin first.
More effort maybe but it works on way more occasions.
And Alt+PrntScrn exist for a reason.
>Ctrl+Delete
I use shift+delete for that...
Right, it's shift+Delete to delete something permanently
on wangblows
alt+d is closer and can be used with one hand
F10
Win+d
F2 on a file will allow how to rename
tab lets you rename the next file
Alt+space mapped as window switcher. Also vimfx for Firefox is a must.
>lack of ctrl+c ctrl+v by default on urxvt forced me to start using SHIFT+Insert and CTRL+Insert for this functionality
>It became second nature and use it even on fucking windows.
Thank fucking god it works
^D = end
^U -> Delete from cursor to start of line.
^W -> Delete word before the cursor.
^H -> Delete character before the cursor.
^A -> Move cursor to start of the line.
^E -> Move cursor to end of the line.
fuck, meant to reply to ip
ctrl+l is better because you dont have to leave the home row
>Cmd + ,
opens the preferences in every mac program. why the fuck doesn't everything do this?
I use ALT+D to get to the address bar.
Single hand, doesn't take me off home row.
ctrl drag fuckin bump
ctrl shift esc for tas manager only
pressing alt+(anythging) alt alone brings up upper left corner menu which has useful shortcuts for mouseless interface
I meant alt+space
but alt works too
it was the standard way to do it in 3.1
Win+D
kek
>shift + enter in word
>go on next line, without starting a new paragraph
This is fine :)
F12 for the console.

Win + Shift + S - you can draw a square to copy the selection to clipboard, it's similar to snipping tool except you don't have to open it to activate
the bracket keys change your brush size in Photoshop
Alt+Right mouse button drag is superior
One direction for size
Other direction for hardness
he's on about speed
it's faster to ctrl+l
if you're the type to care about shortcuts it's generally to save time
CTRL + Enter
adds a .com to the end of your address
Ctrl+shift+t for restoring browser tabs. Also restores all tabs after accidentally closing the whole window.
Ctrl+Z's better
It works for me in firefox, both in linux and windows. Though I don't really like to move my hand up to the f bar, I prefer alt of ctrl combos.
>it's faster to type two keys rather than one
Didn't know abut this one, thanks user.
When the two keys are closer to where your hand already is than the one key, certainly. Same reason I use Ctrl+R instead of F5.
>it's not faster to press two buttons with fingers on different hands that are very close to those two buttons than move one finger a relatively long distance and press a button
right.. i knew that. ignore me!
CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE
Vimkeys.
Not a keyboard shortcut but in linux you can paste the previously selected text by clicking the scroll wheel
