What's the tech meme for 2017?

phones without 3.5mm jack

They seem to be having fun though.

It definitely loses a lot of appeal after you get over the initial excitement.

>windjammers shirt
retro gaymer fanboi
>didn't play any of the good games

voice assistants

Brain to computer interfaces

VR is only good for looking at things. You'll sooner see it establish itself in real estate, interior design, architecture, construction or landscape architecture than >muh vidya

>2014: 3D printing
Almost forgot about that meme

Dockable devices (Nintendo Switch, Samsung Dex)

Why is it a meme?

2011 called, Siri wants to talk to you.

>It definitely loses a lot of appeal after you get over the initial excitement.
Motion controls help that a bit. Seriously, if you've got a Rift, pick up Touch. Otherwise pick up a Vive. It really is fun, just got to find the right games to enjoy (which is really hard until you've actually played with room scale VR. What looks basic on a monitor can sometimes be a lot more interesting and expressive in VR, especially the social multiplayer stuff).

Because everything that can be 3D printed can be built in a factory more efficiently, effectively reducing 3D printing to prototyping and art.

I'm amazed how many scientific papers about 3D printing there are, it doesn't make economical sense in most cases but if you got stuck in space with a 3D printer you can build a very efficient antenna I guess.

I doubt that anyone believes 3d printing is something you'd use for mass production.
The point is that it's a relatively cheap and easy way to create custom parts.
Even if you don't have a printer you can just get someone nearby to print it for you at 3dhubs.
Such a things just wasn't possible until recently and it's definitely not a meme.

This. It's not like 3D printing is a magic bullet that solves all problems. For custom parts and people who do a lot of prototyping, it's a godsend. For things like housing for third world/low income countries, it creates a much better situation for those types of people. Only now it is not economically viable, but i could see it being in most homes, and if not, almost ever business, in the next 5 years.

So it "is" for prototyping and art?

Can you use a custom transmission you 3D printed on your car? No. Can you use a custom transmission you 3D printed on your hobby RC car? Yes.

Printing cars/computers/everything! is a meme. It may be possible in distant future but not right now, and far fetched tech ideas fit the definition of meme in tech.

Volta

Yes, good for prototyping, you know, that thing you need before actually trying to mass produce something.

Giant Bomb wanted this video removed because they felt it misrepresented how they felt about VR so badly.

This video is a bit misleading, like many Crowbcat videos. Of course if you show only the negatives of something it's going to look bad.

Also, as the other guy said, motion controls and, from there, roomscale. The only issue right now really is lack of full on gaming experiences. Many people expect it to be immediately amazing. Yes, it's really cool, it's really immersive, but it is not a deep experience. For most people they are skeptical of vr until they try it. I encourage anyone who hasn't to try something like superhot or budget cuts, you'll be sold

So? Is it something that we should all have? Because it is memed as such, and that's what makes it a meme.

I'm pretty sure it would be like VR, fun for a few times but you put it away and never touch it again.

So is this any good? Can I plug it into my PC?

I only want to use it for watching porn, mind. I have a Samsung Galaxy S6Edge and it was pretty hot with the cardboard shit, but uncomfortable as fuck.

>Is it something that we should all have?
No, it's not, but neither is a soldering iron yet I still have one because I actually have a use for the thing.
Should I just twist wires together instead? Are soldering irons a meme?

Can't use it on PC, and if you did itd be kinda shitty. Also why do you need it on your pc if you want to use porn, just put it on your phone? So what if your phone gets hot, electronics get hot

actually you can use it on the PC and it's pretty good for games, look it up on YouTube, uses some shitty third party app, but it's possible and not that bad

lets list some other tech memes from the past years.

2010: 3D

Soldering irons are not a meme because it was never "everyone in the university should solder, soldering is the future".

I'm not saying 3D printing is irrelevant, I'm just pointing out the cases it's advantageous is not everything as everyone claims.

His complaints seem to be more applicable to indie games in general than VR in specific.

It was not a mistake, only someone who never tried it before would say something that stupid. The only real issue with VR right now is that it's too damn expensive for an entertainment device.

The thumbnail makes it look like he has black shoes and really short legs.

>not that bad

GPU accelerated deep learning

>everything that can be 3D printed can be built in a factory more efficiently
But user, that's just not true.
What does "built" mean? Machining? Additive forming? Molding?

If you're talking about Jeff (the fat dude), he actually likes VR. He hates the video that OP posted since it's like two or three 8 hour streams edited to make it look shit.

Not sure why it's being spammed again. Maybe reddit found it or something.

I know this dental company that produces different kinds of dental health products. They use 3d printing for, yes, prototyping, but also for printing molds and even implants for dental operations. Like someone has a fucked up jaw, they'll scan the guy's head and print out a titanium part for it. It works well for that purpose. It won't become super widespread but it has its uses

back to Sup Forums you little shit

BEZELESS SCREENS

VR is for spess and flight simulators.

Basically shit where your player character is comfortably stationary for the most time.

Virtual productivity environments might be cool too given a high enough resolution for the headset.

So it's a meme? Because they were memeing it to be an everyday tool in our lives but it is not. It's just another engineering tool which will be used to some extent here and there.

VR is at prototype stage. They decided to sell to consumers cause shits and giggles.

Next gen (or even the gen after that) will be good.
