Because the search terms or query in words works differently than google. Heck even the transition between yahoo search to google search is actually like what you described.
Honestly google searches gave me more sponsored link than ever instead of what i want. If google didn't have sponsored links and dumb DCMA complaints or shit, it will be better than current.
