Before asking for help, please check our list of resources.

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Praise Stallman!
First for GNU/TTY

thank you

Alright so I just did a fresh install of debian 8 and this is the process I had to go through to install the IDLE for Python 3.4:

- try to download and install idle-python3.4 package
- get told I need python3-tk package
- try to download and install python3-tk package
- get told I need blt_2.5.3 package
- try to download and install blt_2.5.3 package
- get told I need tk8.6 package
- try to download and install tk8.6 package
- Success!
- Do all of the above in reverse order

Is this how it's going to be for every package I try to install? Is there an easier way?

Does anyone have some more beep music?

Okay, not sure which thread is the real thread, so I'll post in both:

Anyone knowledgeable about installing gentoo with UEFI support?

I'm at the point where I should install grub, but it tells me:
EFI variables not supported on this system.

Doing some digging, I found that I need to exit the chroot and "modeprobe efivar", but I get

modprobe: FATAL: Module efivar not found in directory

I have also tried modprobe efivars and modprobe efivarfs. Both with the same result. I can only conclude that the minimal installation ISO does not have the ability to do this? Is that correct? And if so, how can I install in UEFI mode?

Jesus dude, if you just dropped GNU from the OP without the smarmy "FUCK COMMIES" business then it might have just slipped by unnoticed, and people would use your thread.

I used to be on the /flt/ side when it was worth fighting for, but you're really just being a cunt.

Is our irc channel called 'flt'?
That's what the website links to:
fglt.nl/irc.html

This is a fake thread. Actual thread:

take your Sup Forums shit and go back
we want a friendly thread, not shit like
>lele THE COMMIES
>lele THE JEWS
>lele BSD IS MORE FREE
>lele FUCK GNU
>lele RMS A PEDO
fuck off with your shit

The channel doesn't exist anymore. It redirectsa to #sqt.

What the fuck are you on, son, we don't want GNU drama either.

In all fairness, the other thread actually predates this by 10 minutes.
Bit cheeky making it that close to the bump limit, but it was after 300, and you should have checked the catalog before going ahead.

At this point, you're both just screaming "my thread is better because I says so".
If you cared that much, make the thread on or just before the bump limit like a good turbo-autist.

>spawning a subshell just for your PS1

>thread that intentionally removes all GNU parts titled "FUCK COMMIES" is somehow better for actual GNU/Linux discussion than a regular thread

Shit that happens when people start memeing GNU every fucking post. Like this didn't happen before.. just ignore it and it'll go away.

I'm not defending the thread faggot, just saying that he's not actually doing anything wrong, you just happen to not agree with him.
If it bothers you that much, put in the effort to get there first.

Also, this is exactly how /flt/ turned into /fglt/ in the first place, so your getting butthurt is equally hilarious as pathetic.

>Git good or get out

Also, that thread has more unique IPs than here, so if you want to maintain the lower-traffic thread you're welcome to it I guess.
Everyone else is just going to decide for themselves, not listen to your autistic screeching.

>nothing wrong
spreading disinformation is wrong and should not be supported
>just ignore it and it'll go away
nice meme

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as GNU, is in fact, GNU/GNU, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus GNU. GNU is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called GNU, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a GNU, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. GNU is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. GNU is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with GNU added, or GNU/GNU. All the so-called GNU distributions are really distributions of GNU/GNU!

stop

kys

That's how your /fglt/ was born. Now grow up a little and stop this fucking drama.

**GNU/stop

>spreading disinformation
This isn't a liberal arts course, repeating things doesn't make them true.

If you have a difference of opinion you are welcome to it, but there are no hard __FACTS__ when it comes to Linux vs GNU/Linux vs Lignux or whatever the fuck meme name is cool these days.

Again, if it bothers you that much, step up your game and beat them to the finish, no point crying about it when janny clearly isn't bothered enough to help you.

Subtle, but it works.

Someone should email this to RMS, see if he replies.

awesome!

The other thread claims GNU (and with it Free Software, because that's what GNU stands for) is communism. This is obvious disinformation in order to troll. It works well because the same faggot kept creating threads before with pics like "PROPERTY IS THEFT" and posting Karl Marx.
Fuck this shit. Fuck "FUCK COMMUNISM" and the whole anti GNU faggotry.

Without GNU we wouldn't sit here.

thought about this before en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astroturfing

>The other thread claims Linux (and with it open source Software, because that's what EFF stands for) is anti-freedom. This is obvious disinformation in order to troll. It works well because the same faggot kept creating threads before with pics like "IT'S NOT LINUX, IT'S GNU/LINUX" and posting RMS.
>Fuck this shit. Fuck "COMMUNISM" and the whole forced GNU faggotry.
>Without Linux we wouldn't sit here.

It's easy to mince words to try to make a point. Try harder next time.

and

Enjoy.

please go back to school and about communism

it was getting annoying and obvious to see the threads with "lol GNU

>please go back to school and about communism

You obviously don't understand what communism is when you identify GNU and Free Software with communism.

>reading comprehension
why is this thread still being bumped

Because it is the true /fglt/.

Apparantly for a game to run steam needs some openssl stuff called libcrypto and shit like that.

The thing is i have this stuff installed already.

i heard i could do something like ld libary path but im not sure what im even suppose to do

the game in question is shadow of morodor

>You obviously don't understand

>libcrypto
do you use Arch linux?
bugs.archlinux.org/task/53649

all my fucking serching, and i couldnt find this.

and yes i am on arch

now how do i roll back....

well ill just figuer it out with the wiki..

many bellsings annon, i was thinking i had to refund or do a dual boot

Hey Sup Forums, what's the best lightweight and user-friendly distro for daily use?

>it werks

did i mentioned how much i love you user....

all I did was search for "Shadow of Mordor libcrypto" on google.. you're welcome ^^

I kept searching for shadow of morodor openssl, I wonder why I didn't get it.

>I rly luv u doe

I just want to find a neat distro and DE. At the moment I'm trying KDE and it's by far the dumbest DE I've ever used.

Source Mage
Debian + OpenBox is a nice combo (Or look into Bunsenlabs).

Debian is by far my best Linux experience. At the moment I'm just trying KDE and it's super uncomfortable.

One thing I have been able to do only in Cinnamon, Gnome, Mate and KDE is a custom keyboard layout. Specifically choosing the Super 3 modifier. How can I do this with OpenBox or any other WM?

>lightweight and user-friendly
Xubuntu or the Fedora Xfce spin

update, in case anyone's interested, I solved it by just using an Ubuntu LiveCD to finish the grub installation, since AFIK the gentoo minimal installation iso doesn't support UEFI.

So now that infinatily is dead, how do I get decent font rendering on Kubuntu?

>Fedora
why would anyone use or recommend fedora?

Yeah take a look at these.
wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xmodmap
wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/X_KeyBoard_extension

Fedora with Xfce.
It's actually decent in my experience.

For all the Poetterware it comes with, it is by far the best ootb selinux distro that their is.

Check the Arch Wiki on configuring your fontconfig. It's just a config file. No idea why infinatily became this popular anyway.

it's like Ubuntu, except all DEs have the buttons on the right side like god intended. No orange color scheme. Not based on Debian or anything, a true from-upstream distro. Corporate backing so you don't feel guilty for not participating in the community as much as you should.
I could go on, but these are the reasons that come to mind.
But with all it's good sides, Fedora is heavily into Gnome and Systemd, and it shows. Happy New Redhat World :(

configuring fontconfig is fucking hell though

>tfw got mpd+ncmpcpp to work fairly easily this time
things are much smoother when you take your time reading man/documentation

Is this a boy or a girl?

>things are much smoother when you take your time reading man/documentation
that should be the official motto of GNU/Linux. Alternatively:
>GNU/Linux: rtfm!
>GNU/Linux: just read the documentation already
>GNU/Linux: it's always in the man page

Neither; it's a cartoon.

girl (boy)

>Source Mage
unironically

how to update on source mage?
is it a regular command?

So arch is not detecting my phone and usb memory card reader
what do i do

Why not use transfer over ssh?

Thats debian for you, horrible dep management

find the model numbers and google them to find answers

apt install idle-python3.4

When installing gentoo, does it matter what profile I pick? For now, all I want is a window manager, file manager and wifi.

Just use the empty profile and build from there

Hey guys, I'm running Linux 18 (Sarah) and I've got the latest version (2.7) of wine-staging installed, got a coupe of questions:

If I install winetricks would it still work with wine-staging?
Suppose I want to setup a directory for certain libraries or whatever, I know that for wine you'd use mkdir ~/wine-whatever and then to configure it WINEPREFIX=~/wine-whatever winecfg, does the same thing apply to wine-staging?
Last but not least, which do you guys consider better: Wine 2.01 or Wine-staging?

Not sure which one of you told me to switch from Mint to Antergos, but it's great. Thanks.

what is linux 18

Oh shit meant to say Linux Mint

It will helps, if you don't do it now, you will do it later. Choose the default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop

Haven't tried but it should work since wine-tricks is just a big bash script.

The way you usually work around this is manually specify some of the dependencies when you install the top level package. It short circuits some of the dependencies resolution that's breaking. It's not great but it works.

Or dont use a shitty distro with a shitty package manager that cannot handle deps

ebin meme, got it off reddit?

Arch, Gentoo, or Fedora? My number one priority is security while still being usable. My number two is controlling bloat. My number three is ease of use (e.g. being able to hook my laptop up to the TV, having suspend on lid close actually work).

Any advice? Currently running Fedora but I'm not sure if I want to hop distros again once 24 loses support.

Hello, mates! My current notebook has a Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 using the ath9k modules, horever my system totally freezes (randomly) and I got these erros:

ath: phy0: DMA failed to stop in 10 ms AR_CR=0xffffffff AR_DIAG_SW=0xffffffff DMADBG_7=0xffffffff
ath: phy0: Failed to wakeup in 500us
ath: phy0: RX failed to go idle in 10 ms RXSM=0xfffffff

Somente can help me? I'm using Arch Linux.

arch

I was leaning Arch, just because it's installed on my old (now backup) laptop and I want to standardize one distro across every device I own.

My only concern is Arch dropped GRSecurity support and I can't find anything regarding what Hardened Gentoo is going to do about it.

Pacman is comfy as fuck though.

No, Grsec went PAY ONLY.The testing build that was being used no longer exist for ANYONE.
Hardened gentoo is just as fucked,as well as anyone else who was using it.

Use apparmour

sorcery update to update the package manager
scribe update to update the packages
sorcery rebuild to rebuild all your packages
and cast -r linux to rebuild your kernel

If security and stability are REALLY you number one for you (with side order of a lean system) then you should be looking at CentOS or Debian stable. My guess is after seeing what security and stability actually looks like, you'll bump up the priority of ease of use and having modern packages.

Fedora. No doubt.

It's not that it can't handle depends so much as there are multiple possible candidates/versions to fulfill dependencies, each with there own dependencies. Also existing software may depend on a conflicting version so replacing something may have side effects. So the package manager is like: you figure it out. Other distros get around this by only providing one packages that provides XYZ. So do you want choice or do you just want it to work?

I have zero problems with my distro and my package manager.
>choice
Why would i want outdated software on my system?

install ubunut

is git autistic or am I just to stupid to create a gist? why even that json crap, horey shiet

thats what I tried
