If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following: 0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine. 1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything. 2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS. 3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Not in Ubuntu (it's in a separate utils package) nor on Arch. I didn't check other distributions.

>read about software freedom >start making changes in my life >read about RMS >bored at work >do nothing productive all day, might as well have stayed at home >check FSF homepage >missed an RMS talk in my city by an hour >could have gone if only I had known about it earlier That was months ago and it still haunts me.

how does rms travel on planes if they aren't open source?

Hey Sup Forums, what meaningful differences are there between Plasma and lightweight DEs like lxqt and others. I've heard that lightweight DEs don't have thumbnails, advanced search, poor USB compatibility. What other things are there? I like minimalism but not at the expense of critical functionality.
Aiden Sanchez

Hello there! You seem to have used the term "open source". The term "open source" was created by a group of people that did not want to be associated with the free software movement. When I say "free" software (which is one of the alternatives preferable to "open source"). It's not about price; in that case I would say "gratis", or "free as in free beer". It's about "freedom"! This is what the free software movement is fighting for. So what is "free" software? Free software is any software that guarantees the user the four essential software freedoms: > 0. Run the program as you wish. > 1. Study the source code and change it so it does what you wish. > 2. Redistribute exact copies of the program. > 3. Distribute your modified version of the program. Some people decided that they wanted to restrict the user; but being able to study and modify the "open source" code is not enough! This is directly hurting the cause of the free software movement because it takes away the sociological "freedom" aspect of free software and turns it into a technological one. So for those reasons I ask that in the future you use the terms "free", "free/libre" or, if necessary "FLOSS" (short for "free/libre and open source"), though the latter should still be avoided.

I have a problem with my Samsung monitor. Under Windows it displays colours normally, but under Linux it's too contrasty, I thought it was the drivers, but I dont think so anymore. It's not the output either because screenshots of Linux viewed under windows look normal Then I got the idea it might be colour profiles, so i started tinkering, but the Gnome/Unity colour tools wont let me calibrate, the button is greyed out. I even had Samsung Techsupport "IT specialist" call me and all they told me was "yeah uh, I dunno about Linux man, I cant even read out the basic colour profile delivered via the driver. You're on your own, man!" Any help?

Is there decent keyboard without fucking windows logo on it?

Why a program that is not supported in a distro works in that distro if you compile it from source?
Michael Harris
Get a mechanical one poorfag they dont cost that much

A DE is a collection of software. Thumbnails depend on the file manager. Every one I know has a thumbnail/preview view. Advanced search is built into the file manager, so it depends on that. USB compatibility is on the kernel level and it works the same. You fell for meme and myth spreaders.

Doesn't KDE ship there own FM? Won't using a diff one under Plasma cause error?
>USB compatibility is on the kernel level and it works the same.
Yes I know but some DEs make USB usage easier by detecting it when plugged and mounting automatically.
Julian Thomas
Sounds annoying
Gavin White
so fluffy :3
Kevin Miller
Yes, KDE has their file manager. Every desktop environment has one. That doesn't mean you can't use other software "with" KDE Plasma.
>Yes I know but some DEs make USB usage easier by detecting it when plugged and mounting automatically. Most file managers implement some sort of automatic removable drive monitoring. At worst you have to install additional packages.
Grayson Jones
What are some cool terminal commands?
Jose Collins
So you're telling me the only diff between Plasma and the most lightweight DE is just eye candy?
Colton Gomez
and resource usage
Logan Taylor
No, the difference is the different programs.
Carson Carter
Privacy related?
torsocks. In a script with wget, curl, whatever, just prefix with torsocks.
I'm talking about Torvalds, he has no affiliation with the complete OS comprised of the GNU system plus Linux, the kernel.
Noah Williams
Are you trolling or just exceptionally stupid? If those diff programs have diff functionally then we end up at my original point.

>Proprietary code? PUT A SOCK IN IT! Freedom flowers in your footsteps when you sport these high-quality, crew-length socks. Rendered in black on a field of burgundy on each sock are the image of the GNU Project's emblematic smiling gnu at the front ankle, and the text, "GNU" to the rear - you will spread the message of freedom as you arrive AND depart.

Trying to limit mpv to only 1 instance. My approach was to check if one is already running, if yes, kill it and start a new one. Here's the Bash script, but it doesn't work. It terminates the new instance as well. What am I doing wrong?
if pidof "mpv"; then pkill "mpv" mpv "$1" else mpv "$1" fi
Jacob Garcia
pidof isn't executing
replace if pidof "mpv"; then with if [ "$(pidof mpv)" ]; then
Adam Nguyen
Still getting the same "Terminated" output in my terminal emulator.
Logan Brooks
$ cat mpv-wrap #!/bin/sh
pid="$(pidof mpv)"
if [ "$pid" ]; then kill "$pid" mpv "$@" else mpv "$@" fi
Try this.

Circuits lives matter too user, where are my open source schematics? CAD drawings? Mechanical diagrams?
and yes, lots of software on board, all proprietary REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

why not simply kill all instances of mpv and then executing it? why the check?

Its like they dont even use XFCE
Chase Martinez
Thanks, this works. What's the catch? Was it the fact that mine somehow terminated all mpv instances, including the newly started one?
Tried it, but with the same results as before. It also kills my new instance.
Noah King
I was shitposting as RMS.
I personally see no problem with trade secrets and closed source
Joshua Reyes
>closed source
Jayden Thompson
Lets say theres a security bug in a program you must use every day. If its free, you can fix it, most likly someone else already fixed it. Show me how you do this with nonfree software, cuck.
Colton Long
The problem wasn't that you shitposted as a free software advocate, but that you did it in relation to a problem where it doesn't apply. Yes, planes use proprietary software. However, the passengers aren't using the nonfree software. It would be more appropriate to ask why he still uses nonfree javascripts to connect to McDonald's WiFi.
Ryder Martin
how does /fglt/ stay up2date? do you read rss feeds? do you read news sites? which news programs are you using what sites aren't complete bull and interesting?
Brody Martinez
>closed source That implies that having the source code matters in order to have freedom, but it's freedom that makes a program a free program.

On Linux, can you browse the insides of an archive using a regular file manager? On Windows you have to use an app like winrar, File Explorer doesn't support it.
Wyatt Jones
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
Adam Morgan
You can use gvfs to mount it if your file manager supports gvfs.

apt-get dist-upgraded'd today on debian sid and after downloading the packages I got that message. Both on my live sid GNU/Linux system and inside a vm running GNU/Hurd sid.
I do not want to lug around hubs and shit like that. It's meant to be a portable computer, I bought it to be able to pull it out in public and play around with it. Having to carry extra shit defeats the purpose of getting a portable device.

I dont think it's the samsung monitor. I have that issue with the Intel cpu IGP in my notebook. I even have color issues with blacks. In Linux VGA and HDMI output have different color levels than the integrated lcd panel.

Some minimal thing with a tiling WM and a vi-like browser (Qutebrowser is currently best) for maximum screenspace. I've run similar setups based on Debian, Arch, Gentoo, Slackware, and OpenBSD, so the particular distro doesn't matter too much.
Anthony Morris
Okay, I have a REALLY weird problem: I have a USB connected Harddrive with MOST of my stuff on it. It's called "MyBook" On the previous Linux installation (Ubuntu 16.04) it one day decided to be called "MyBook1", which fucked up my bookmarks and filing system On THIS installation (also Ubuntu 16.04), it just decided to be called "wwn-0x50014ee2....." Why does that happen and how can I reverse/prevent it? it's still called "MyBoon" in the explorer, just the adress seems to be fucked up
Samuel Hernandez
How would a vi-like browser maximize screenspace? Do the keybindings make your screen bigger? Genuine question, I use VimFX myself.
I used firefox with a small theme on my old 720p laptop no problem.
Nathaniel Reed
Thanks.

I was thinking about learning kernel dev but it looks like they publish your real name and email address and this is required. ;_; I guess if one makes something cool they can always maintain it out-of-tree for anonymity and less hassle.

I don't know what to choose between MATE and Xfce. Try to sell me either, Sup Forums

You can clone the git tree and hack into that tree.
