dd won't work 100% because of the HDD's micro controller allocating blocks. DBAN is safer if it's an HDD, blending the disks is safest. SSDs you basically have to trust that the built in erase is secure. You could try: for f in {1..9}; do dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda; done and then a zero pass, and then the built in erase. That may or may not be more secure than secure erase. Definitely won't hurt.
