This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.
Second for what dive strap? My criteria: >18mm >affordable >preferably rubber or something similar quality, not chink silicone >looks good on this old piece of shit
Jeremiah Nelson
Phirst for phisting
Kayden Fisher
Jesus Christ that things is ugly! Ain't no strap that's gonna fix it.
Ian Moore
Bonetto Cinturini make affordable natural rubber straps.

What to do with my old G-5600KG? Toss it away to locker and forget it or do people buy these used?
I was wearing it one day for the longest time and after steel watches it just feels wrong.
Kayden Stewart
I'll take it off your hands for $10, reverse the polarisation and hydro mod it, and wear it.

Are Nixon watches shitty?
Carter Cruz
Very.

Yes, how can you even ask this question.
Adam Davis
Extremely shitty
Xavier Reyes
Figured they were just another fashion watch like MK or some shit.

>walking down the road wearing my Casio Oceanus OCW-S100-1AJF >casually enjoying my wristwatch; changing time zones and observing as the hands adjust themselves swiftly and accurately >Ah, this watch is consistently accurate to within a few milliseconds, I think to myself >Still enjoying the watch, I am lost in my thoughts >suddenly I am accosted by a man on a bright yellow motor scooter >he shouts at me, claiming that he is armed and that I should give him my money and valuables >trained in the art of combat, I resist >in the fray I notice that he's wearing a Rolex Datejust >I scoff >he notices that I've seen his watch and he appears to take offense at my scoffing >"This is a Rolex Datejust," he says >"The patina is from my father and his father before him" >I bet you purchased that on eBay, I say >"N-no," he begins >"a-and it has mountains more soul than y-your Casio ever wi-" >Let me stop you there, I say >Do you have the time? >Because I do, and I will not give it to you

Honestly we don't know what is the next vintage fad these rich hipsters might pick up. Fuck these can be the next $350k Tudor. I mean we don't know, I'm sure the Tudor was unassuming as well. We just don't know, and none of us are watch experts.
Connor Gomez
Jesus whatever but it doesn't look any better with 350k price tag.
Julian Parker
Casios are for poor people and niggers, mate. They ruined themselves with the G-Shock. I'd much rather have a fucking Datejust than a Casio.
Daniel Evans
>oceANUS 'nough said about that casio shitter.
Aaron Lopez
I've noticed Orient's look pretty good. How are the Makos?
William Roberts
How is this an argument for it not being fucking ugly?
Jayden Kelly
Finally got myself a good watch, $75 from a Garage Sale for a Swiss Made 50m waterproof watch. It didn't have a battery and strap so I had to go to a watch store to change the batt and get a new strap. What do you guys think?
Isaiah Howard
Because the Tudor is ugly IMO. Like you calling the Vostok ugly IN YOUR OPINION.
Easton Morales
Bretty gud. Bezels can be shit if they aren't aligned properly. But the finish tends to be acceptable considering the price, bracelets are exceptional.
Jack Brown
But is it worth $173?
Ian Russell
Only you can decide, user.
James Reyes
Looks cool user. The strap matches the dial which I like.
Xavier Cox
you're going to get roasted by autistic people ITT but it's ok
I wouldn't have paid $75, especially not from a garage sale
Nathaniel Brooks
Such a beauty wear it in good health buddy
Oliver Diaz
Is there anything really expensive out there that has a look a like of that vostok or vica versa? I think we do have that with the tudor/subs etc. overall. People agree they look good.
Thomas Young
If you can afford a Sub, get one. Tudor is fine as well. Or you can get a Tag Heuer
Parker Powell
Then why bring up the price?
Alexander Kelly
I hope thats a fucking joke, who would ever pay 75 bucks for non working watch?
Isaiah Wood
I hope it's really titanium. As it's the only good thing about it.
Adam Phillips
Why didn't you buy a Rolex after I informed you about that you should own a Rolex?
Cameron Cook
>Or you can get a Tag Heuer Or you can just throw money in the toilet and flush it away.
Brandon Harris
Would you rather have a Vostok?
Christopher Jenkins
Yes, at least it's a smaller loss.
Nathan Reed
>tfw you try to literally flush money but the toilet but it clogs >just like a shitter
Luis Garcia
So wait archer watches is better than shane?
Zachary Turner
It's working after a new battery. Also the lady said I could bring it back if it doesn't work.
Jose Gutierrez
Yes.
Gavin Wright
Vostoks increase in value over time, just like Rolex. They're literally the only two brands that do this.
TAG loses a fourth of its value the moment you take it out of the store and another third when the first scratch appears on the buckle.
Levi Rodriguez
>Vostoks increase in value over time, just like Rolex. They're literally the only two brands that do this.
Patek Philippe.
Isaac Powell
I just bought one for 99ยข on ebay, I honestly don't know how its going to go up from that...
Luis Perez
Some people might argue that Al Archer has an even stronger reputation than Shane does, but does that mean Al is better? I have no idea, because I'm very happy with Shane's work and wouldn't take my stuff anywhere else.
It may just be that Al participates online more (e.g. on the Omega forums) whereas Shane barely does email.
Ian Diaz
Yeah, but if you're the first owner you'll be dead by that time.
Carter Roberts
>Vostoks increase in value over time, just like Rolex. They're literally the only two brands that do this. Not exactly.
It's more like Rolex and Patek are the two luxury watch brands that maintain their value the best on the second hand market. There are SOME rolex models and some patek models that have actually increased in value, but it's certainly not their whole range. Don't think you can go buy some random calatrava or oyster perpetual (or the old air king) and think you've got a sound investment for your retirement.
Rolex and Patek lose the least value, unlike virtually all other watch brands which depreciate by varying degrees as soon as you wear it out of the store.
I know nothing about vostoks, their collectability, and what models have actually appreciated in value accordingly.
Grayson Garcia
I'm just checking out Als site and its interesting that he makes and sells his own watches as well. I really want one now ... Now he's an hour and a half away from me but Shane is only 30-45 minutes and I need to spend a weekend in Toronto soon anyways so I'll probably see him. How much does he charge for a quote?
Basically the story is I dropped my Sinn and from running fast to running slow. It also appears to stop spookily close to the same time when it runs out of time. And now recently my crown stem makes a grinding noise when turning. Either way I'm pretty upset and worried I'll get rape pricing. Is he fair ?
Asher Thomas
Green Neptunes, MO/military models, first-gen Amphibias, 300m Amphibias all have ridiculously inflated prices.

That's honestly pretty ugly and the band looks fucking weak.

Looking for recommendations: I am going to buy a friend a watch for his birthday- hard budget is $1300. Can be grey market new or very lightly used. Looking for a watch on the sportier side, between 36 and 40mm, on a bracelet, and mechanical. Preferably no day or date, but this is going to be very hard to find, so it's not that important.
So far my #1 choice is the Oris Sixty Five. Really well designed watch with one of the most neatly integrated date windows I've seen.
I've also considered a lightly used Tudor Oysterdate, Sinn 104 (just wish that this didn't have day/date, it ruins what would otherwise be a great design), and perhaps one of the new Tag Heuer Aquaracers with the textured dial. Any thoughts?
Eli Allen
Still using this. Haven't found anything else interesting.
Levi Rodriguez
I'm sorry your gay.
Carter Hall
>mfw I have four bids via proxy vendor for watches

>TAG loses a fourth of its value the moment you take it out of the store and another third when the first scratch appears on the buckle. I think it's even more than that.
Go on Chrono24, >filter Tag Heuer >filter Condition:0 That will show you all the grey market shit that tag dealers flood the grey market with for whatever reason (to maintain stock, due to slow sales or whatever). Compare these Condition:0 offerings with new, in-store pricing to see just how much of a shitter a TAG really is.
Blake Morris
Here's some TAG production data:
In 2013 they had 500 employees (unknown amount of watchmakers, I'd say very, very few and mostly sales and marketing people) and churned out 750,000.
By 2016 they had doubled their staff, and have no doubt increased production accordingly. LVMH only care about the bottom dollar, more so than other conglomerates and that's why they're so despised; LVMH buying a brand out signals the death knell for quality for that brand.
With numbers like these, one can only surmise that TAG outsources a fuck load of their production to elsewhere. Chinese bracelets and case blanks perhaps? What about dials, hands etc.,? Would not surprise me. If Omega does it, TAG definitely does it. Movements, well, that's obvious and widely known.
They're shit. Mallbait for morons. Either buy something cheaper that's actually better, or buy something actually better that'll cost more.
Unless of course you really have a hard on for something they make and can get one for a price that reflects their true value (very, very reduced from retail price), or you're just made of money and don't mind buying semi-disposable garbage for shits and giggles.
The only people I know and see with TAG are the grossly uninformed and discerning.
TAGs are for fags, and not the stylish, homofags, I mean your real garden variety faggot.
Lucas Edwards
>I am going to buy my friend a watch >$1,300
How badly are you trying to fuck this guy, user? It's okay, we're all gay here.
Asher Martin
Way better than the vostok there before.
Jeremiah Perez
Who /insideofthewrist/ here?
Jason Baker
>Neptunes Interesting. A decade ago they were already hard to find. Still, I'm surprised at the prices these things can go for now!
Anthony Reed
Not only are you not high-speed low-drag, but you insult all southpaws with your faggot shit.
Leo Collins
>and UNdiscerning. ftfm
Wristshot please. That watch looks puny in your hand. It looks robust.
Caleb Diaz
>Who /insideofthewrist/ here? I am. But because I live in a 3rd world country most of the time and doing so helps to prevent incitement theft.
Not that this helps since my watches were stolen from my home anyway by the maid so I only have my beater damasko left to warm the inside of my wrist lmao - habits. It's why I've started frequenting these threads again; I'm thinking about replacements.
Jack Harris
How does /wt/ feel about this watch?
Kayden Diaz
...
Ryan Williams
I quite like it. But. >44mm
Nicholas Wood
Sorry for your lots user.
Parker Cook
It's getting dark and the quality is crap so you are gonna have to live with this.
Thomas Nguyen
>It's why I've started frequenting these threads again; I'm thinking about replacements. I'm sure one of the poorfags around here will be willing to be your new maid.
Evan Edwards
Have you considered slicing a bitch?
Jackson Moore
The bezel is 43 mm, and that's how large the watch is visually.
The case itself is around 45 mm, but it's hidden behind the bezel.
Also, those lugs go straight down, making it a very good fit.
I have 7" wrists and it looks absolutely fine.
Ayden Evans
Good to know. That only leaves the pet peeve of mine, which is Seiko doing that half arsed knurling. On and off shit.
Jaxon Butler
Shane literally charges a third of what most watchmakers do for the same work. He does services on time/date movements for $150 maple syrup bux, as an indication.
What you'll end up paying depends entirely on whether the movement needs any parts, and if so, which.
Luis Long
I like the ceramic bezel
James Perry
Yeah sucks ass. I had the explorer 1 for like a decade and it was a graduation present. The seamaster for less than a fucking year 6months tops. Occasionally the rage returns to me full force.
>I'm sure one of the poorfags around here will be willing to be your new maid. But can they clean? Good help is really hard to find these days (no, seriously, ever since the old staff died out we've had a rotating number of pathetic, suspicious and mostly illiterate drones; cheap imports from neighboring countries shittier than this one).
>Have you considered slicing a bitch? I considered more, but I didn't have a gun license then and bribing the police to look for her and then bribing them again to return whatever they might have found would've been such a fucking hassle. Yes, it's that kind of country.
Logan Bennett
>But can they clean? I can't vouch for that.
Parker Sanchez
Phuck me dead you lost a rollie because of that cunter thief? I'm sorry for ur loss man
Brandon Martin
good thing I have an ae1200whd-1a
Jonathan Smith
As someone who strictly wears bracelets I think it's Seiko's best looking diver. If you need other strap options though it's no good.
Andrew Hall
Had the SARB017 for five years now, this was the first non-quartz watch I ever owned. Wore it day and night almost constantly.
Here are my thoughts:
>was pretty amazing to see for the first time, and still catches my eye to this day >lume is still as bright as ever >accuracy isn't all that consistent, but very good nonetheless in general >I want something a little bigger now >the red in the little "north" triangle on the compass bezel has faded almost to grey >when you start turning the compass crown, the compass bezel itself shows some play (goes off-center just a hair at the very start of its movement)
Isaiah Young
That bracelet really is fantastic irl. Width, thickness, shape of the links, brushed surface, ... everything. Beautiful. I want a bracelet, but not having the option of a nato kind of sucks. Maybe Seiko will release some kind of adapter.
Maybe
;_____;

Daily reminder that mechanical watches are just jewelry for trannies. These watches can't keep proper time, have abysmal power reserve and might break if you clap too hard. And don't forget the necessary 'servicing' to keep them fuckers spinning.

>Sinn 104 (just wish that this didn't have day/date, it ruins what would otherwise be a great design) This.
Funny how an added day complication cheapens a watch.
Samuel Rodriguez
I'm actually buying it for my old man- wish I had a higher budget to get him a proper luxury piece, but I'm still in school, so that's what I've been able to save up for it.
Jordan Williams
Damasko DA36 plus bracelet fits your budget.
Caleb Ramirez
$1300 can get some very nice watches, some very understated pieces too. Some vintage omegas in very nice condition can be found for a lot less, with a budget like that, you could well get something very, very nice if you were so inclined to go vintage.
Caleb Gonzalez
Why must Seiko stress that their watches are for DIVERS ONRY.
Nicholas Jenkins
>He doesn't know
Noah Wright
Yeah, I've definitely been looking at vintage Omegas- especially the Geneve Dyamic range. It can definitely be a bit of a gamble though, but I'm certainly not against going vintage.
Carson Wright
Any particular vintage brands I should look for besides Omega that fit my criteria?
Tyler Cooper
Check with local jewelers. always worth a shot. I know at my local, one of their customers has just dropped in an Explorer II for servicing, but they have mentioned that he's not against the thought of selling it. May get lucky and find some elderly gent selling some of his watches to fund a grandchild's car? Leave some money? Always worth asking.
