Why haven't you virtualized all of your user environments yet?

Why haven't you virtualized all of your user environments yet?

4gb ramlet

Why do I want to throw performance into the trash?

because battery

Because it is not useful?

You can also containerize with docker or rkt (&orchestrate, like with kubernetes). Which tends to be more useful for one user, but even that is generally not necessary.

I did, for web browsing. I can have a VM connected to a VPN and the rest of the machine not. If I have to do some botnetty shit I can take a snapshot, do it, and revert it to defeat a lot of persistent tracking methods. It's an additional layer of defense against malware.

I always see VMWare in screenshots on Sup Forums. Now, I won't believe for a second any of you fags has actually bought the thing so where is the safest place to pirate it?

That's a virtualbox logo :b:

I wasnt referring to OP but Sup Forums in general

Because virtualization sucks. XEN, KVM and ofc virtualbox and esxi are garbage.

We'll see once seL4's VMM is ready. The only proper hypervisor is a microkernel design, and VMM should never run privileged.

> We'll see once seL4's VMM is ready.
ETA for it working right: Shortly after Hurd and Minix are released, just a few years after all code is purely functional.

...

the official site, then look for serials

What's wrong with kvm? Honest question.

They give out student copies

>VMM should never run privileged.
how do you expect to do hardware passthough or peripheral passthough, or host passthough, or networking that isnt ass?
Sometimes you just have to do it.

seL4 capabilities.

>4gb

Linux is not suited as an hypervisor.

The correct hypervisor implementation is a microkernel.

Microkernels lost long ago Tanenbaum, get over it.

OS X doesn't run well in a VM

My phone's OS uses a microkernel

too slow, eveon on latest cpus it sux

>poor
>tfw 4gb ram on laptop
>tfw home built desktop with i7-6700, GTX 1080 and 16 GB DDR4 ram is fucked in the asshole with ransomware because I needed windows for school so I will need to wipe everything

Dreamspark/Imagine

cause i use docker

>virtualbox
LAMAO
use kvm or hyperv

b-but I have user

I was running 4-5 VMs with an i7 8gb of ram for class, speed isn't an issue. Loading is if you don't have an SSD.

What are the advantages of VMWare over VirtualBox?

>JDownloader
What is this, 2009?

Just pirate VMware, its not comparable to virtual box in all seriousness.

If you wanna use free software go KVM.

VMware supports nesting. If you were looking to practice setting up hypervisors/clustering/raw mappings, it's a good way to build a lab without having multiple physical machines.

test

The networking is pretty sweet

Configured fail over clusters and server workgroup clusters with it in server 2012

fancy taskbar. what is that?

Crazy, isn't it? Back in my days, we were happy -- happy! -- if we could get 4 MB.

A true leader in techdom.

For what purpose?

4GB of RAM is more than enough for everyday tasks such as browsing the internet, doing documents and spreadsheets, and doing a little bit of programming. I use a laptop with 4GB.

No, it's 1997. Why aren't you using glorious Mac OS 8 on your new Apple Power Macintosh 9600?
>350 MHz
>64MB of RAM
>4GB hard drive
Lmaoing at PCfags.

it's a gnome extension called dash to panel

what do you use? i'd love to switch jdownloader and universal media server for non java foss software

was wandering if virtualizing my node js application locally so I can have a backup it up as an image, would this work?

I would gain nothing out of it. There's something fundamentally wrong with your tools if you need to abstract the entire OS for them. I use VMs for testing and network prototyping.

vmware has better gpu support so you can actually try to play simple porn games with it. VirtualBox stagnated when oracle acquired it and should have been forked two years ago when it was apparent that it only received severe security updates. You are better off using kvm instead of virtualbox. Also vmware just needs a serial form a torrent description to work pirated. New versions are on a official public reachable server.

Downside of vmware is that it needs to be heavily patched in order to work on "newer" kernels. I have around 20 patches on it to work at all.

You mean using Android?

It's fucking slow as shit.

True gurl programmer!

I have a 4 MB module on my key ring that cost $200 when it was purchased new.

Oh, how things have changed.

in my country you get assfucked my a lawsuit for torrenting, so JDownloader + oneclickhoster is the way to go

>windows 7 pro let you run a VM out of the box
>windows 10 installed on your privately owned box is just a VM microsoft uses to spy on you

which country?

I am using potato with 4GB.

germany

kidding me?

because i run Qubes.

no games

no, why should I

all i really need is hashcat. gpu passthru for that. and i have a separate computer exclusively for windows and games

Installed Windows on raw disk using VirtualBox last night so that I could boot into Windows on bare metal and turn off the LEDs on my laptop.

Worked well.

not him and it's true

I use Jdownloader as well and I think its based af. It's UI is a mess, maybe the worst UI of any sw project to date, but it works eith everything. Nothing embedded is safe from jdownloader either. Saves you all those online downloader sites for yt and gives abilities to dl soundcloud etc as well.
Absolutely marvellous.

According to the Arch wiki if you have a dual boot it's possible to run your other OS as guest while one of your OSes is a host. Anyone has any experience with that? What do you use it for?

But user I did.

XEN is great IMO

jdownloader no longer uses java

>all those fucking QEMU sessions for programs that can be simply containerized

What an idiot. Why would you fully virtualize qBitTorrent and PiHole? What is the point of using Proxmox if you're not going to utilize containers?

I did. I virtualized every machine and our network and ran it off a single underpowered machine (dual p4 xeon, 4G ddr, 4 disk raid 10) as a proof of concept for the boss complete with an 8 page color coded report on how it would save us money and time and be faster in the long run. Did all this on my off time. Boss never even glanced at it so I never brought it up again. FF 7 years and the boss reads somewhere about virtual environments and comes up to me wide-eyed and full of ideas. Answer his questions and re-print the report from years ago and explain that this report is still valid but updates can be made if necessary. He never reads it.

Wtf do I have to do...

I don't think virtualizing clients is a good idea.
Servers on the other hand I always virtualize. It makes everything waaaay easier when switching hardware underneath

Can agree with that, had a previous client that we virtualized literally every workstation and replaced them with thin clients. I spent more time explaining to users that turning off the thin client on their desks did not reboot their computer as they were expected than I did actually troubleshooting anything.
It's odd that they did not realized all of their windows and shit were still open right where they left them even after a 'reboot'.

>virtualbox
>vmware
>not qemu/kvm

you have to be faggot to not use QEMU/KVM for virtualization

Virtual Box can be really slow, even on decent PCs.

Strange. I never needed to patch my copy of VMware.

redpill me on seL4 please

Woah... so this is the power of females...
