AMD Phenom still decent?

Is AMD Phenom 955 BE still decent CPU?
I bought it almost 7 years ago and I keep it at 3.8GHz and it never caused any problems.

Its a 7 year old AMD processor..... What do you think?

Of course its going to bottleneck modern games and any decent modern GPU (RX 480, 1060, etc)

Depends on what you want to use it for I guess. As far as general use goes it should be fine but I wouldn't want to play BF1 with it or any game relying on a decent CPU.

Yeah but I don't see anything much changed in CPUs except phenom is 45nm and right now we are at 14nm, or am I missing something?

its fine if its all you have to go with your tinfoil hat

sticking with AM3 socket you could get an FX but those are terrible upgrades on a dead socket.

its more efficient to go AM4 for AMD or 1151 intels. you will get several years life from them, barring any sudden advancement in cpus

And how much would it bottleneck an rx 580?

Stop just looking at the clock speed.

Your talking less than haswell i3 multi threaded performance.... its gonna bottleneck big time in some CPU intensive games.

Dont wanna even think about optimized games like PUBG.

No. Performance per watt and in an absolute sense the performance is shit.

In a relative sense... it'll still play back Chinese porn cartoons and shitpost on the internet with you. So there's that.

You can even install and run Gentoo (inefficiently, but you can).

It's worst than the worst i7.

Recently did a bios update on my X4 940 and now the performance dropped heavily. Any idea what could have caused this?

Maybe thermal throttling triggers a few degrees earlier or something?

For internet browsing, media consumption, light gaming and word processing it's still fine.

For older gaming and basic web stuff, it will work fine. Just dont expect it to do well with any new intensive shit.

I remember I bought the 956 for my first ever CPU in my custom build. Good times

phenoms and fxs were utter fucking garbage.

I fell first for the phenom and then for the vishera. they were terrible.

Then I got a i5 3570 non k and overclocked it to 4ghz on a cheap z77. Been happy ever since. probably going to upgrade until ryzen 2 or 3

I finally replaced mine for Ryzen, feels good to play modern games again.

If it works for you, why are you shitposting about it?

pRETTY BAD. Your CPU has worse single threaded and multi threaded performance than the Pentium G4560, which tops out at the 580/1060.

I don't know if its even on the level of a 1.gen i3 for 1156 desu, you could overclock those to high heavens..

Bottom line OP, if you don't need any better, you don't need any better.

By todays standard, the x4 phenom2's are garbage. High power draw and gaming is pretty much out of the question for more modern games.

But frankly, if I didn't play games and enjoy trying out/overclocking new hw when something interesting comes along, my old socket 939 dualcore Opteron 175 I ran @ 3.2ghz with 4gb ram probably still whould be fine..

>Only clock speed matters

A new cpu with the same core count and same clock speed with completely destroy the 955 in every single way. IPC has come a long ways since then, not to mention significantly improved energy consumption and heat.

Phenom II is the fastest processor without a built-in botnet. The 955BE was the top of the line quad core in its time. It's still fairly good, you can pair it with a 580 or 1060 to max out basically anything at 1080p.

i got an old machine with that just waiting on a new gfx card to get some use again. it was my first bought cpu, so i'm gonna do that keychain thingy i see people do with their old cpus once i finally retire it, which may not be soon since it still werkz, aside from a noisy as fuck stock cooler
